Kernow GWR steam rail motor

My replacement was sent out the same day as the faulty one arrived back at Kernow.

About a weeks turnaround from posting the faulty one to receiving the new.

Can't fault Kernows service.

In reply to Harlequin on January 28th, I found one or two cab fittings projecting below the floor were catching the leading wheel flanges when the bogie rotated.  Tricky to trim, but I managed it!  This might be the answer.

Mine was sent last Sunday and not heard a thing, maybe the replacement comes tomorrow :)

They also spent far too much time in the works - boiler replacement was a flaff, and it meant that the passenger part of the unit wasn't earning revenue.

What about the spare power units?

I thought the idea was a replacement motor was waiting so the unit could be back in service PDQ.

Those that have returned defective models, can I just ask what the turn round was for you?  Just trying to get an idea of how long mine will take.

Cheers

IIRC 5 or 6 days

I haven't checked the tracking so I can't say how long the changeover at Kernow was.

I didn't get an email that my return had arrived with Kernow (sent Thursday last week), but they sent me an email on Monday that (the replacement) had been despatched. I then got further emails from Royal Mail that they had received it, another when it was due to be delivered, and then another after it was delivered. If you haven't yet heard anything regarding your return, it might be worth contacting them. I presume you used their return post system, and didn't just post it back at your expense?

There are several photos in Lewis shewing spare power units - at Swindon. Meaning that the SRM had to get there in the first place.

In the meantime the carriage section was out of action….

For those of you, like me, still waiting for your SRM here is the latest update from Kernow, posted yesterday (9th Feb).

Quote

We can advise that the last pre-ordered non-sound pre-ordered Railmotors have now been sent.

We are continuing to complete the pre-orders for sound-fitted models. These models are fitted at our workshop and we currently still, as of Friday 9th February, have approximately 300 to fit so please be patient!

Mine is somewhere in that last 300. I'm away from home until Thursday, so by the law of sod it'll probably turn up on Monday!

Always..  The joy of Pre-Orders, you can't plan holidays around them.

They cleared 200 in just over a week.  So that's great news. Mine in the final batch too.

Yes, that's what I meant, the SRM went back to Swindon, where the "old" unit was swapped out and a "new" i.e. the next available serviced unit swapped in, which would take a lot less time than separating a boiler from it's engine. (which still needed the unit removing from the carriage.)

Further to this.

Posted the returned item on the Monday at Bromsgrove PO.

Received at Kernow midday (approx) Wednesday, Kernow dispatch replacement on Thursday, arrived backon Saturday midday.

BTWwe get a very good postal service here, I've had a couple of parcels recently, tracked 48, arriving next day, including one today from Warrington (not model railways!) dispatched yesterday

Boilers could be lifted out through the roof hatch. Swapping the drive bogie entailed lifting the front of the body about 15' into the air.

They had a suitable travelling crane in Swindon, I assumed they used that?

Yes, but I think it emphasises the point that SRMs tied up specialised resources at the works.

Uncoupling an 0-4-2T from a trailer car was far easier...

And they were overly heavy for the number of passengers carried, once ICE engines started to be trialled the SRM was effectively on life support, being much lighter and more efficient, the article in Lewis emphasises that, with the weight per passenger being half (or better) that of an SRM

Was weight a factor in their demise?

I would have thought the death knell was as described further up the thread - the fact that if the loco needed servicing, it took the carriage out of commission as well.

In any event, its a charismatic loco / carriage combo and I am waiting (patiently) for mine to be despatched from Cornwall to its sunny destination on the Costa Blanca.

According to Lewis the power needed to lug the weight around made them more costly to run than an ICE railcar. The GWR trialled a petrol electric machine quite early on

As you say the small tank was more flexible, especially as it could haul a much larger load, if traffic demanded, the SRM struggled a bit with one trailer. It had less than 7000lbf tractive effort with quite small wheels.

History repeated itself with the diesel railcars, where the limited tail load meant they were replaced by engine + coaches on some routes where the passenger numbers increased

A snippet for the curious among you.

Why is the plastic cradle the Kernow SRM arrives in marked OR76SRM?🙂

That type of deisignation is used by someone else, fairly well known.

It's on the PCB too, which is labelled OR76SRMR-PCB01R5

See the Sam's Trains review at 22:00 if you don't feel like taking the body off.

Sent on a Monday and returned following Saturday, so more or less by return.  We're both in the SW which might help.  Same packing with even more brown tape. Brian

Back to working models

I have now run mine in to the point where I could finally set it up (DCC).

I have trimmed the top speed back to 50 max. I have also dimmed the front and rear marker lights, so they are less like searchlights.

I must commend Kernow on the drive train, the (very) slow running is just superb.
