Tullis Russell PAA using Hornby PGA and Silhouette Portait Cutter

I remain distracted by the possibilities that the portrait cutter has opened up - this time its out with the October 2005 Railway Modeller for Colin Craig's drawing of the Tullis Russell PAA hopper.

post-336-0-52324000-1417028530.jpg

About an hour and a half of drawing, half an hour of plotting and another hour and a half of building got me to this point last night.

post-336-0-62053000-1417028531.jpg

This is still a prototype, I've realised I only cut 1 set of end brackets, and the folds at the top section of the body were not quite as intended, but it rather proves the basic design, although I've always thought these hoppers were rather tall and thin and this looks a bit 'dumpy' *

Jon

I fear I may need help - I'm worrying if I've offended a model mineral wagon by calling it dumpy... :fool:

You've got me intrigued...what thickness material are you using and what type of material? How adaptable is the software for the cutter? Have you found any limitations?

This all looks very promising to me.

20 and 40thou plasticard, the thicker for the formers within, the thin stuff for the sheeting - its the same principle as the PAB pet coke hopper I describe here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/88528-pab-anglesey-coke-hopper-wagon-scratchbuild/?p=1647718

The main Sillhouette Portrait/Cameo thread is here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/79025-a-guide-to-using-the-silhouette-cameo-cutter/

Prototype number 2, or perhaps production No.1 has been stuck together and been out to the shed for a blow over in Halfords primer grey.

I now need to detail the chassis, including filling the holes for the now defunct walkways, and work out how to do the transfers.

Looks good.  I think the reason why the wagons look tall is that from side on or at rail level the discharge doors were visible below sole bar level making the wagon look taller.  Would it be easy to resize the hopper up to 7mm?

Are all the parts cut out individually or is it done as a net to be folded up?

Simon.

I've not explored scaling in the software.

The floor and all the internal ribs are on a sheet of 40 thou, then on the 20thou  there are a pair of lower sides which are each a single part, and the nameboard panels, upper slopes and a false roof formed one fold up section that wraps over the top, I suspect if it was scaled up it would need re-drawing to take account of the different tolerances in the bigger size.

Sadly, Tullis Russell went into administration a few days back.    As always  its the best that goes and rubbsh replaces it.   Their book

papers were superb,  and i bought many tons down the years.     So your models are now history.

Maybe we should be making  models of Indonesian or Brazilian wagons ....sigh ....

As there was quite a lot of interest at DEMU in these wagons, I've been doing a bit of development. By way of some instructions...

Overall photo showing the sheet as it was laid out - due to a bit of idleness on my part it wasn't laid out quite optimally so this will change.

post-336-0-82940700-1433678286.jpg

the 1/2 sheet showing the spacers - these will gain some letters in the new sheets

post-336-0-80782600-1433678287.jpg

and a close up of the design for 1 wagon

post-336-0-47435300-1433678288.jpg

so first step was to glue the 3 intermediates (A) onto the floor and use some of the snapped out bits to brace between them

post-336-0-89227300-1433678290.jpg

post-336-0-56123900-1433678291.jpg

The floor is the same width as the bottom of the spacer, it really needs to be chamfered to match the gradient of the hopper side, so I've sanded it on a bit of sandpaper stuck to a flat surface

post-336-0-18754700-1433678289.jpg

post-336-0-05400100-1433678290.jpg

Once that had a little while to harden I added the lower sides of the hopper with about the same amount sticking out beyond the floor at either end.

post-336-0-36530100-1433678292.jpg

post-336-0-07655000-1433678293.jpg

I then moved onto the wrapper for the top of the hopper, and I've opened the score line into a groove using the edge of a chisel scriber (or Micromark panel scriber) to remove a V shape of material, when the wrapper is folded these groves close up.

post-336-0-63580800-1433678313.jpg

I've then just stuck the central section down, and will leave that to set hard before wrapping the rest.

post-336-0-40994500-1433678314.jpg

SO whilst that is setting hard, I've moved onto the swing roof. Again more scoring to allow the roof to fold neatly.

 post-336-0-29296900-1433678315.jpg

The only bit of section used in the build is a length of 60thou [ section, but I've used evergreen H with 2 legs cut off.

post-336-0-14746200-1433678316.jpg

I've then taken 2 lengths of this and sandwiched them between the sort of Y shaped foot, and the sort of pentagonal top section (2 of each per end) and attached that entire sub assembly to the swing roof.

post-336-0-08999000-1433678317.jpg

Back to the upper body wrapper, and now that the centre of the sheet is attached firmly we can glue the remainder, and tape it in place until the bond hardens.

post-336-0-83263100-1433678317.jpg

The H frames at the end are one of the few areas where score and flod won't work well because there is a dead end, therefore I've chosen to use a piercing saw to just get down into the dead ends.

post-336-0-44136900-1433678319.jpg

post-336-0-18376600-1433678320.jpg

I don't seem to have photographed releasing the other brackets for the end, suffice to say they were done rather carefully because they are a bit of a pig to get the centres out! I then glues these to the H frames and let them set.

I've then returned to the body and added the upper ends and taped them in place

post-336-0-63140900-1433678318.jpg

The lower ends need to be chamfered to fit the ends, and again I've used my sandpaper attached to an offcut of shelf, to sand an angle on the inside faces.

post-336-0-08793000-1433678321.jpg

Once they are fitted, the body sheeting might need some sanding to match, here is the before

post-336-0-81704200-1433678338.jpg

and after

I managed to knock out a  couple of sheets of bits over the course of a weekends demonstration at Tolworth, if anyone would like a set that will do the bodies of 4 wagons perhaps you would like to drop me a PM - about £20 plus a large letter stamp.

Thanks,

Jon

I've finally mamaged to source a few more donor chassis, and build some more bodies to go with them, however I'm now in desperate need of transfers - does anyone have clear side on photos of the Tullis Russell the papermakers, and their logo that I could comission some transfers with?

Hi John,

Came across this thread after doing a search on these wagons and they look good

Have you had any progress with transfers and would you happen to have any sheets of bits left? Got two PGAs waiting in the wings.

Thanks in advance,

Wayne,

I haven't done anything about the transfers, its a fairly low priority at the moment, although finishingb them would allow me to sell them and simultaneously add to the funds available for the new hase and de-clutter prior to moving...

I might have some 'in the flat' but need to check this evening, but they come in sets of 4 @£20 - PM if interested.
