RMweb Gold Andy W Posted February 9, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 9, 2015 was that actually done in practice? was it really easier to do that than swap the ends the loco was at in the platform? Yes, it was standard practice in the steam era. The station was a lot bigger than it is now, and needed to be. The sheer volume of traffic through Preston had to be seen to be believed, and to arrive from Glasgow, reverse in a platform and head off to Blackpool would mean crossing the entire layout at the north end of the station and extended platform occupation. If the same loco was used should a train be reversed it would end up running tender first between Preston and Blackpool, alternatively Preston shed would have to find another loco from somewhere, which would mean more light engine movements in the platform area and to and from shed. Going round the circuit past Lostock Hall shed got trains from the up side of the WCML to the down side of the Blackpool line very conveniently and allowed Lostock Hall men to relieve Scottish locomen if necessary. The train didn't stop twice at Preston unless signal checked.
Rivercider
During either the Wales and West or Wessex era there was a service from Bristol to, I think, Paignton that reversed twice in Exeter, calling at Exeter St Davids, Exeter Central reverse, back to St Davids to reverse again, thence to Paignton, cheers
Derekstuart
Aberdeen-Euston trains used to call at Ed Haymarket to Waverley and then back out through Haymarket. (I suppose it would be pushing it to say it also reversed for about 1/2 mile at Carstairs as they put the two halves together )
