Certainly does, the only photos I had managed to see before had concrete ramps and possibly a section of concrete, i see the shape of the side changes just in front of the lead car to the shape of the concrete types sides although it appears to be brick shaped.  That link then opens up a series of useful photos.

Most photos so far of that location tended to be associated with the 26s on the Fife services.  The fact it is a 120 rather than the usual 101 may be the reason for this photos.

Thanks for that

Bachmann, when you going to do a 120 (with a 101 middle car :clapping: for is mid 80s Scottish Modellers not to picky am I!), each year I vote for a 120 on the poll.  Last year I managed to correctly predict one out of three in the Bachmann predictions, predicted the large logo 47, failed on the 120 and on the 101 middle car.

couldn't have been there long, didn't take coach numbers then. Edit : in fact it was a new book as I was heading to York for a few days, aged 13!! Wow......

not sure what the DMU numbers boil down to, some 120s and maybe a 107. 52025, 59090 & 51224 have SC beside them (which I guess might have been strathclyde livery)

Steady on, this is a Sprinter free zone, that 143 is a bit too close for comfort! Mind you although it is a second generation unit, I guess strictly speaking it was not a Sprinter.

I remember them appearing on when the Bathgate Line reopened. They were soon replaced by 101s with black window surrounds and Bathgate Link rather than ScotRail on the side.

Thanks for posting the numbers, always interested in that kind of info. With only one 47/7 perhaps you were there for 1/2 an hour. Was the 26 on a freight or one of the Fife services when there was a shortage of DMUs.

Sorry dont' recall what the 26 was up to, judging by that traffic flow I certainly wasn't there too long, but long enough to see more locos than you'd see in a week nowadays!!

Some odd things, looks like some 2 car formations were running, but there again I don't remember that. There again perhaps I just missed the number, but that looks like twice I missed it.

Regarding the 143s and Bathgate, I ended up moving there some 20 years later!!

oops sorry, I've made a mess of that, I was trying to make that come out better than that. I won't post any more ramblings!!

my note taking wasn't too great and basically I wrote things down as I saw them, so there is no real indication of stock formations.

However I reckon you can sort of detect some of the formations, you can see when I went down to the parcels area for all the parcels vans!!

Don't stop on my account... These lists bring back memories! As well as useful modelling data!

The second last entry... 11910? by any chance?

Can anyone make sense of some of these formations. I think 47708 himself has covered a lot of this earlier.

From memory I remember the main rakes would have been the dundee circuit stuff

Other main rakes would be the stuff going down to Carstairs (always duff hauled) which produced interesting mixes of modern stuff mk2 aircons, older buffets and a mail coach of some description.

Obviously the push pull rakes as well

I do remember some other rakes, some solely mk1s but not often.

Looks like I visited Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh the year after that, as I do not remember seeing any ScotRail NEA coaches

Equally, once I had seen all the 47/7 locos I stopped taking their numbers

I managed to see 47716 a full 3 months before he did, but he managed to complete all the Class 303 units before I did

Sadly tended to spend more time at Glasgow Central, Summer on a SPTE Day Tripper (two visits to Carstairs)with days out to Carlisle

Going to Edinburgh helped solve the question over how the buffet swapped on Carstairs portions

Equally, almost every time there was a failed HST power car southbound

After the push pulls my favourite was the portion trains to far flung destinations via Carstairs.

47s with Blue Grey, Intercity or mixed livery rakes. Used to catch either the Dundee to Poole or the Aberdeen to Penzanze from Inverkeithing to Waverley on Saturdays before taking up residence on Pl 14.

Below is a screen shot of a spreadsheet I put together. I could not get a Scottish Region Carriage workings document but found one for the Midland region May 1985/1986, this listed trains South of Carstairs, as such was the combined Edinburgh and Glasgow portion. I had omitted the portion from Glasgow for my purposes. This was based on my memories that the buffet coach came from the Edinburgh portion.

Have set it out as the train would sit in Waverley viewed from the Mound side looking North across to Princess Street Gardens (as viewed on my layout). Times are for arrival at or departure from Waverley.

A couple of old photos I found today, which I thought I had lost years ago.

One of 47 641 at Haymarket, heading South.  Looks like a portion train headed to Carstairs.

Second photo of said locos nameplate.

Probably taken 1986 but could have been later, I found this photo taken by someone else. Fife Region at Carstairs,

Tempted to think it was the same day but the BG is no longer next to the engine.  They did tend to do a few runs with different trains when used on these services.  However the roof looks dirtier in my photo.

47 641

Tempted to think it was the same day

Whilst at Eastfield it kept losing and then gaining its miniature snowploughs

This looks like 1987, as it has lost all three parts of its miniature snowploughs and they were refitted once reallocated to Inverness

47641 was one of my favourite locos once transferred to Inverness, sounded horrendous but was often sent to rescue failed locos

Thanks for the info.  I think you are correct about it being 1987, I am pretty certain it was not 85-86.  I did not take many photos or keep good notes.

I did keep going to Waverley beyond 1986, I can't recall exactly when I stopped going, although it shames me to admit I do remember seeing manky (well weathered!) 477s with Scottie Dogs rather than Haymarket Castles, with Mk3s in Intercity rather than ScotRail livery with a ScotRail liveried DBSO at the end.

However I can confirm I stopped going before the 158s took over from the 477s...................

As discussed before, I took loads of photos in the late 1980s and early 1990s, until the Class 158 units fully tookover

In the summers of the late 1980s I spent more time at Glasgow and Carstairs, only visiting Edinburgh a few times a year

The main issue with the extended period on which ScotRail operated diesel locos and first generation DMU, presented Eastfield depot with some serious problems

As a result many locos visited only briefly, and knowing the fleet was to be reassigned / disposed of, there was little care thereafter

This was quite obvious in the final months and weeks of 47/7 operations

The same issue existed with the rolling stock, many sub-fleets had to be swapped over as the services were to be retained

One positive that came out of this was the swap out of unrefurbished ScotRail livery coaches for refurbished ones

Many of these coaches retained their intercity red stripe, although losing their logos, but a few even had the striipe covered over (very cheaply as well, paint over the dirt at the coach ends)

  • 1 month later...

Been a bit quiet recently as I have not been out to the railway for a while, my days off have been taken up with getting the house ready to put on the market.  Hopefully we will put it up for sale in the next week or so.  We really like the village we stay in, but with three girls we are looking for a bigger house (with a double garage hopefully).  It looks as if we will be moving either into Perth itself or to another village near to it.  We will just have to wait and see.

The good news  is the railway was built with a possible future move in mind.  It will not be quiet as simple as dismantling and reassembling a club exhibition layout, but most the joins are hidden under removable tunnels etc and most electric were done with connectors to be able to avoid a complete rewire.  Hopefully it should not be too problematic.

Anyway better start the dismantling.................... after the Glasgow show anyway.

Seems I may have less time than I had expecting to dismantle the layout, we got an offer on the house on the day it went on the market. I was very careful to confirm to any viewers that the layout was not included!

One viewer said as I opened the garage to reveal the layout "Oh I had heard about you".

The hunt is now on for a new home.

Ideal wish list.

A heated and insulated room or garage of 32 x 16 ft

Fitted out with a cinema system to watch Diesel and Electric volumes 1 to 7, James Bond, the three hour Gods and Generals followed (after lunch) by Gettysburg, Sink the Bismarck, Battle of River Platte, The Longest  Day, etc etc

Views over Perthshire’s stunning scenery with a mainline railway within the vista.

Real wish list.

Somewhere dry where a 16x 11 layout can be reinstalled.

TBC………….

We have had an offer accepted on a new house, we are really looking forward to the move.

Looking at my wish list a few ticks and a few partial ticks.

Double garage, tick.

Insulated and heated, not yet.

Views of fine Perthshire scenery, tick.

I think there are distant views of the WCML, the bit between Stirling and Perth anyway, where pointy nosed kettles used to run on three hour expresses between Glasgow and Aberdeen.

Cinema system in railway room, not quite, but am sure I can sort something out.
