GWR88
Hi all, I'm doing a little research on nuclear flask trains DRS runs and I found a photo on Jims "Down by the tracks with colas" thread of a DRS train pulling a low level nuclear train on a PFA. Can anyone please give me any information on the types of wagons used to take the 20ft containers they use (apart from PFAs) and if they're ever run along with the regular flask trains. I know this can be a careful topic to discuss but I'm only after if they can be run of megafrets etc. Also, is this kit suitable to model the PFAs and the 20ft nuclear waste containers. http://pg-models.co.uk/mod-pfa-chassis-and-container.html I'm wanting to know as I have a new GraFar 37 in DRS compass and it needs some wagons to run with. Thank you in advance, Lloyd
Steadfast
Lloyd, for the DRS PFAs you'll want the C-Rail one. I've got a couple for 'one day'... jo
GWR88
Thanks Jo, Are THESE the the ones you mean? Lloyd
Steadfast
That's the jobbie. Also available without the containers, mine are just the wagon. jo
GWR88
Thanks Jo, are the containers that come with it acceptable to use or do they need a roof added to them? Lloyd
Scott B
Take a look here for plenty of pics of various nuclear traffic flows http:/www.flickr.com/groups/1471576@N25/pool/ Scott
Steadfast
The containers have roofs, beyond that I don't know much else I'm afraid. Best bet is probably scouring, flickr, smugmug, google etc jo
Glorious NSE
If it's, for example, these: https://www.flickr.com/photos/75784477@N08/16758552089/in/pool-1471576@N25then the containers are substantially shorter and as Jo says, have a roof, the Cawoods kits might give you some suitable kitbashing materials though? RMweb Premium newbryford Posted April 1, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 1, 2015 There are a few variants of LLW container - half-height. 1/3 height, and even some full height ones used for LLW, usually via Hull docks. https://www.flickr.com/photos/ks-fots/7510501302/in/photolist-crFhnL-nAezp2-djt5Wj-pcmgae-niK3CN-ecx9va-gFFGgW-c8t8uE-qmtinF-niBRFR-hGKVer-nzSppG-hGGKxi-gFG4tp-caKh4A-nC2NxX-hGHB3E-c8EeXh-c8LuZo-gFFXTz-5QvFZF-caKdDG-caKco7-m3k2i4-nbideS-c8W91Q-pvTBZN-oyvLC6-pGZW3E-nA1WsN-c8r5YA-oAKMLd-nsKx14-pfhC5L-pL7vEP-c8kVN3-nBXQ8i-oCbyeB-dXKCEz-dXRjFd-c8oxQu-pufXaZ-nbgpJi-edH6cy-c8Ee5C-r7YxwM-ov5JbF-c8rbLu-c8Lwrd-o2m4Rq One or two other box variants are being used for other waste from decommissioning jobs. https://www.flickr.com/photos/quarm/9029579736/in/photolist-eKUXtf-rAX19n-rAK5qn-qQVUpN-eGkkGP-54Q8nu-7U93sY-5oadS6-GpEFS-gEqG2w-gq7xi9-e9Mg5H-e9SVKb-krhJUt-gXdfKv-9unDA1-fnwaVj-pf7Qir-gVVzxd-eQd8tF-5anVB-5F6VGB-egQHfm-7VcHM-eGi1w8-8VYXLr-3UfdHP-jGpMV1-9i5Py9-fX4atV-d7FYu1-2vVq9N-8RUbZt-8rACuX-ardbBJ-ardbuy-ardbxJ-7jMrau-6oRBwF-8RK6a-aqPZGT-5CTGVL-qp4tN8-qdLN9G-q2Ch6M-pUi4a8-p4gf9Q-oz4QSX-or2Vgp-5zJtbQ if you're doing N gauge, Mike Hale, (Red Death on rmweb) is doing a 3D/resin version of one of the LLW boxes. GWR88
Thanks Jo, Scott, NSE and Mick. Glorious NSE, I model in N gauge so I'll buy some C=Rail PFAs with the containers and chop them down to the correct height. Mick, thanks for the links to the prototype containers All the best, Lloyd
RMweb Gold Revolution Mike Posted April 1, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 1, 2015 The c rail containers are quite different to the LLW containers. I've done one of the LLW containers in N and it is available from Shapeways. I still need to sort out the sloping roof version. I've also got the master for a 4mm version of the same container which I need to cast. Cheers Mike
GWR88
Thanks MikebutI'd quite like the challenge of trying to build one. Especially after a few people have provided links to photos. Lloyd

RMweb Gold big jim Posted April 1, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 1, 2015 when i built my oo gauge dc kits PFAs i cut down the supplied cawoods boxes to an approximation of the low level waste wagons and put a plasticard lid on them, not prototypical but close enough for me, you certainly wouldnt want to be putting any waste in these thats for sure!! the wagons themselves were a swine to build, they were my first kit build and i struggled with them as you have to build them with the wheels in situ so you have one chance to get it right before the glue dries, i had nothing but trouble getting the wheels to actually turn once assembled! and as for putting "DC kits" in the etch where it can be seen..... sold them on now though
GWR88
Thanks Jim that was the idea I had to build the containers. Hopefully the C=Rail kits are better than the DC kits (Even though they're different scales). Lloyd
