In 1988 I spent just over three weeks in Switzerland.  Using a Swiss Pass I managed to cover many of the lines in the country.   I thought I'd post some of the ones from that holiday in the next few days or weeks, interspersed with other European ones.  I took about about 1800 photos while I was there.

We'll start with Zurich where I changed trains after arriving from the airport station.

One of the first places I visited in 1988 was Wassen, on the Gotthard route.

Work was still incomplete on repairing the damage caused by the floods in 1987 which had washed away the railway by the river.  As you will see the railway was on a temporary alignment with a sharp curve while work reinstating the embanment neared completion.  The new bases for the overhead catenary masts can be seen.

The light was quite poor that day, heavily overcast but dry which made photography quite difficult.

We're staying in the south of Switzerland today, this time visiting Bellinzona which has workshops as well as the station. The town has a castle which is also well worth a visit.

Today we'll just look at locos and trains.

Still in Switzerland in the summer of 1988.

A long branch line (about 27km) leaves the Zürich to Chur main line at Ziegelbrücke and goes to Linthal.  There are a umber of intermediate stations, including a halt at Leuggelbach.

Something of a mixture of photos from St Gallen on North East Switzerland today.

Some of the standard gauge, some of the metre gauge Trogener Bahn, which runs at the side of the road from St Gallen to Trogen and one trolleybus.  The overhead wiring where the trolley busses and metre gauge cross can be quite complex.

Switzerland in 1988 again today, this time at Lenzburg on a very wet day.

One is of the goods shed, the others are of Seetalbahn trains which terminate at Lenzburg having come from Luzern via Emmenbrücke.  At this time the normal Seetalbahn trains had warning panels as much of the route runs along a road.

Once again we are in Switzerland in the summer of 1988.

The first three photos show the Wohlen Meiserschwanden Bahn, which closed to passengers on 31st March 1997.  Only a short stub remains to serve industries in Wohlen.

Then we move to Schaffhausen where both German and Swiss trains can be seen.

To add to that

According to "Eisenbahn Atlas Schweiz, 2004" the section from Wohlen to Vilmergen became part of SBB and Vilmergen to Fahrwangen-Meisterschwanden a cycle way.

In September 2013 this was the end of the line, now somewhat short of Vilmergen (with some cyclists!):

It shows that even in rail friendly Switzerland a standard gauge line with high voltage AC electrification (having been converted from 1200v DC in 1966) can succomb to cuts!

Keep up the good work with the photos. Enjoyable as always.

A look at Aarau in Switzerland on a wet day in early August 1988.  Aarau is to the east of Olten, the routes available for the trains are too complex to easily list here, you really need to look on a map.

Using 100ASA Agfa CT21 my notes state that I was taking the photos at 1/125 at f1.8 with a 50mm lens, hence the lack of definition in some images.

Summer 1988 in Switzerland again with a look at a metre gauge railway, the Wynental and Suhrentalbahn.

The railway runs from Schöftland to Aarau and then to Menziken.  It was originally two separate lines, which were connected in Aarau in 1967.

The photos are at Aarau and Menziken.

Another Swiss branch line in 1988 this evening, this time from Beinwil am See to Beromunster.

The first time I heard of Beromunster was seeing the name on the dial of the family radio when I was very young, so I had to visit the place when I went to Switzerland.

The line closed to goods traffic in 2001 and is now a cycle path.  Passenger trains ceased in 1992. (both from Wikipedia)

Menziken is now served by the metre gauge Wynental and Suhrentalbahn.

Hi  Dave

I like to Google Map your journeys that you show us the photos of and I found this relic of the standard gauge trackwork north of Menziken at Reinach Nord where the former SBB line from Beinwil entered the Menziken area:

Now cut off from the rest of the track obviously!

Sadly the Wynental and Suhrentalbahn doesn't go all the way to Beromunster, it stops at Menziken.

Beromunster is one station I would like to make a model of, I've got the stock, trackplan etc, just got to find the time.

When you took that last picture at Beromunster, right behind you was a contraption with a large flexible pipe. I never figured out if it was for loading or unloading grain to hopper wagons. Too late to find out now.

Great pictures.

Brain,

Thanks for reminding me the WSB goes only to Menziken, I really knew that but as usual typed the wrong place name.

Edit:

Do you mean this contraption?

I got to Beromunster by bus on that day,

I suspect it is to unload wagons into lorries.  Is the metal plate in the track covering an underground hopper and the material is then put into lorries using the pipe to fill them from the top?

Second edit.

Have you seen these photos of Ernie Brack's on the line?   https://www.flickr.com/photos/irishswissernie/albums/72157632091433655/page1
