RMweb Gold DaveF Posted July 20, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 20, 2015 In 1988 I spent just over three weeks in Switzerland. Using a Swiss Pass I managed to cover many of the lines in the country. I thought I'd post some of the ones from that holiday in the next few days or weeks, interspersed with other European ones. I took about about 1800 photos while I was there. We'll start with Zurich where I changed trains after arriving from the airport station. RMweb Gold DaveF Posted July 21, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 21, 2015 (edited) One of the first places I visited in 1988 was Wassen, on the Gotthard route. Work was still incomplete on repairing the damage caused by the floods in 1987 which had washed away the railway by the river. As you will see the railway was on a temporary alignment with a sharp curve while work reinstating the embanment neared completion. The new bases for the overhead catenary masts can be seen. The light was quite poor that day, heavily overcast but dry which made photography quite difficult. RMweb Premium melmerby Posted August 2, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 2, 2015 Thanks very much for this, it's a bit different from many closed stations here! David It shows that even in rail friendly Switzerland a standard gauge line with high voltage AC electrification (having been converted from 1200v DC in 1966) can succomb to cuts! RMweb Gold DaveF Posted August 2, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 2, 2015 A look at Aarau in Switzerland on a wet day in early August 1988. Aarau is to the east of Olten, the routes available for the trains are too complex to easily list here, you really need to look on a map. RMweb Gold DaveF Posted August 5, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 5, 2015 (edited) Another Swiss branch line in 1988 this evening, this time from Beinwil am See to Beromunster. brigo
Sadly the Wynental and Suhrentalbahn doesn't go all the way to Beromunster, it stops at Menziken. Beromunster is one station I would like to make a model of, I've got the stock, trackplan etc, just got to find the time. When you took that last picture at Beromunster, right behind you was a contraption with a large flexible pipe. I never figured out if it was for loading or unloading grain to hopper wagons. Too late to find out now. Great pictures. Brian G.

Edit: Do you mean this contraption? I got to Beromunster by bus on that day, Beromunster 6th Aug 97 C22065 I suspect it is to unload wagons into lorries. Is the metal plate in the track covering an underground hopper and the material is then put into lorries using the pipe to fill them from the top? Second edit.
