tamperman36
I built a canal scene about 18 months ago and after having it sitting around in a box for a while I recently dicided to use it as a starting point for a small shunting layout. The brief I a decided on is as follows 1 must have several canal crossings 2 must be at least two track levels 3 must have some cobbled area 4 must have some yard area 5 must have a station and all this in 4 foot (ish) by 2 foot, not a tall order. heres the start
tamperman36
Next stage is to get some 9 mm ply to make the track bed, in the meantime I will start designing and constructing the viaduct on which the station will be and the 2 split viaducts which will go over the canal and cobbled road. tamperman36
There is actually 2 traffic cones, one in the forground and one by the lock in the bushes on the right. Theres also a shopping trolley by the cone and a fox on the right hand tow path.
tamperman36
So been doing some playing around with some bits of building and positions of bridges and think I've decided what the track plan will be. A raised station at the rear with island platform and parcel siding, junction at end of platform over 2 seperate bridges. A 3 road yard on lower level entering between upper level bridges into yard with a spur at the front crossing another bridge and into a building. tamperman36
So now comes several hours studying photos on the net and reading the book Bridges for modellers by L V Wood then I will design the bridges and start to build them. First thing I need to decide between stone arches, brick arches or metal girders, or a combination of them. Ì think the combination of stone and metal girders will work best. tamperman36
The left hand canal bank will be cobbled with the tracks enbedded in it, not too sure about what the yard on the other side will be, possibly concrete road and walkways and cinder and ballast around the tracks, at the end of the yard will be a former rail connected warehouse which will be boarded up and up for sale no longer in use. tamperman36
Been to get some supplies today, got some plastic sheet and some preformed plastic I beams and a couple of sheets of embossed plastic to start the construction of the single track viaduct and low level bridges. tamperman36
So after an afternoon cutting pieces of plastic here is the beginning of the metal viaduct, now to mark out where to glue all the framework and then assemble it. Once the viaduct deck is built it will be time to design and build the stone abbutments.
tamperman36
An afternoon of cutting a plastic sheet into strips and then into pieces, followed by half an hour measuring and marking up for rib positions and spacing then about 3-4 hours of gluing and I have the first part of the viaduct section. A few small extra parts still to fit but the main body is done only painting to do followed by weathering after final fitting and track laying. Looking at the bridge as it is I have decided that it will have a ballasted track bed so quite a while till it will be totally finished yet. a view of the underside showing the bracing much of which wont actually be seen but I know its there. a view of the deck side over which I will be laying the trackbed, I have the trunking and detailling to add and weather in. allan downes
That is truly a work of art. Outstanding modelmaking. Cheers Allan
tamperman36
Another day and another bridge, this one is a little smaller however just as much a part of the layout as everything else. Not so heaverly engineered and about half the length of the metal viaduct but still designed to carry a railway track over the canal, this bridge will be the access to the lower yard and crosses the canal under the metal viaduct. To give a little idea of the progress so far, and how this end of the layout will look A little view looking along the canal towpath under the bridges, its looking good from down here. tamperman36
A side job that I ve been doing alongside the bridge construction involves recycling an old freely down loaded building which had been lying around in the box of buildings and bits for quite a while. I have refurbished it by covering it with embossed plastic sheet and a few little tweeks. All thats needed now is a roof, painting and weathering. tamperman36
Done a little more today involving adding some decking plates and a raised walkway on one of the low level bridges followed by adding some colour also started the painting on the brick workshop. this is the new lower bridge, the grey step on the deck is the raised walkway. This walkway and the main deck are covered with checker plate which is painted grey. This bridge will recieve weathering at a later time a view of the canal area showing both lower bridges and the first metal viaduct in the rough location they will end up in
tamperman36
The brick workshop is now beginning to show some colour, its along way from finished but its starting to give an idea of how it will look. Once I ve got the ply top for the base board I will start bedding in the buildings and structures, and once I have the basics done I will start with the weathering. tamperman36
Its been quite a productive weekend with several sheets of plastic turned from flat sheets to parts of bridge. I'll start with the single track viaduct which I originally built square, after spending quite a while trying out several positions to mount it I decided that it would work better as a slewed bridge so I decided to modify it. I added two slewed sections, one to each end which make it fit alot better. See photos number 1 and 2 Next I turned to what will be the double track at the rear of the upper level (one running line and one siding). For this I will need a shorter but wider bridge so this was duly built, I may yet add a lower central rib on the deck if it will look right. These two are the only comlpetely plastic bridges on the upper level. See photo 3 Finally I created two bridge sides for the road bridge which will pass under the upper level station. These only need to be sides as they will be mounted onto the ply board track bed and detailled as required. See photo 4 photo 1 photo2 photo 3 photo4 photo 5 overall view showing all bridges in rough final positions.
tamperman36
Well I think I've finally worked out just how to do the upper level station. It will now have 2 platforms and not 1 island platform, this way should make the track layout better. It will still have a parcels road at the rear.,

tamperman36
That was the original idea however it would make the track layout a little tight but if I do it thid way it gives me a little more room and will allow the tracks to line up easier. It also gives me more platform room for units, it will still be very, very tight if not inpossible to ģet anything bigger than a sprinter on the platforms. tamperman36
A change of focus today with the begining of work on the station, I deciced to put a parcel depot under the station with the use of a 1960's style concrete building. ( I believe they are called CLASP buildings). I started by making 2 different size panels in multiples, once I had created a small stockpile of each I started the building. So I started fixing the panels onto an internal structure after drawing and measuring up, I then cut out openings for windows and doors. Once I had made the basic structure I then went on to do the lower level frames and glazing

tamperman36
To go with the parcels office I have also started to design and build the station wall to go behind it and the access to the parcels depot. I have been designing it as I go on and addding parts as I think of them such as the windows and the canopy brackets. I think it looks quite reasonable so far.
