woko
Hello folks after getting all that useful advice on the MR brake vans I have had a go at the GNR Fish van next which I intend to break up into panels to 3D print (as soon as I decide on what printer to purchase that is) But wondered if I had gotten anything horribly wrong with this model. Please ignore the wheels as I intend to purchase those separately rather than 3D print them, plus the photograph I used as reference had solid wheels not spoked Anyway thanks for looking Rob
RMweb Premium Nile Posted July 5, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 5, 2016 I suspect those louvres are too fine to be printed by all but the most expensive of printers. It may be possible to give the impression of them using wedges, or was you thinking of using etches?
RMweb Gold JCL Posted November 16, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 16, 2016 Hi Rob, I've only just seen this post, how did you get on with this?
woko
Ok so its been a few years since I have finally gotten round to posting any updates on this! That thing called life often gets in the way! So first pass GNR fish van, in 4mm scale, printed on my zortrax m200 fdm printer, the body of the van has printed well, but I need to play about with the settings for the roof to decrease the banding, and reinstate the vents which didn’t print well! So second pass I hope to improve on this, add working wheels, and hopefully improve the roof quality. I have also posted this in my 3d printing thread so apologies for the duplication!

woko
I have been busy refining the printing on this van, so this is technically the 2nd pass, I am fairly happy with the roof and the van body, the louvre details turned out much better now, and have less support material wedged in them. Next stop is to work on the chassis more as although I have wheels on this, they aren’t as smooth running as I would like. So bearings will be placed in the next updated version, along with some clean up of the underframe. I will have a go at painting this to see how it stands. 8

I hope to have a bunch more soon as it doesn’t take to long to model these on the computer. I do however on the next version need to apply the right solid wheels, and potentially so brake pipes. But currently printing is one of my dads favourite Midland brakes, hope to have some pics of that over the weekend, and improve on the underframe printing process.

You are of course spot on, and it did make me laugh that you managed to spot that error! Intentional as i found that when i flipped the louvres they printed better, as the other way round it left lots of material in the gaps, on the print, and i thought its such a small detail, no would notice...... how wrong was I :)
ColHut
Ahh I am no less sane than I thought. It does look nice though. Good luck with the project. regards

Good luck with the project. regards Cheers chap, I hope to do a few more GNR vans along with some NB and MR freight, kicking off with this MR brake van i am currently prototyping, lots to do still on this, handrails are a bit thick, a long with a missing lower rail, and its all currently about 1-2mm to wide! So hoping to solve that along with getting better prints out.
