AMJ
For those who might have missed it Corus are looking to thin down and eradicate the fleet of Janus locos at Scunthorpe see http://www.scunthorpetelegraph.co.uk/british-steel-locomotives-come-to-the-end-of-the-line-after-60-years/story-29858670-detail/story.html

Ray M
After 60 years, they find them hard to maintain.
Bedders
I understand spare parts were very hard to get hold of, to the extent of having to buy them from preserved lines. Also Corus was 2 companies ago Corus->Tata Steel->British Steel
RMweb Premium ColinK Posted November 3, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 3, 2016 Shame to see them go, but looking forward to the model, especially as I've driven the preserved one at Kirkby Stephen.
PenrithBeacon
I think, but I'm not sure, that there is a derelict example at Barrow Hill. Regards
Zomboid
I think they've probably earnt a retirement by now.
Chameleon
Pity they are getting the German Di8s. They could have replaced them with something modern like a few 08s
gpplumy
New news . 3 being used for parts to keep the other 6 going. With 2 di8s now out of action number51 Janus is back in service

gpplumy
The class 20s are gone except 81 which is dead. We now have the Hunslets , janus , highliners and and di8s in service and one oddball 0-6-0 hunslet.
JeffP
That wouldn't be it at the rear of 51 in my photo inside the shed, would it? It looks different to a Janus, the cabside windows look sloping?
RMweb Premium Michael Edge Posted January 27, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 27, 2017 That's another Janus but the cab does slope inwards, I don't know anything about this variation, must have been for some particular location.
Arthur
Indeed, as covered in this thread, they were modified to improve clearances in the mill. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/106957-appleby-frodingham-railway-preservation-society/?p=2162846 And the link from that thread clearly showing a Janus with sloping cab sides. theplasticbrummy
When Yorkshire Engine Co closed in the late 60's, Scunthorpe wanted a few more Janus locos and these were built or finished off from parts supplied by YE at the Rolls Royce Sentinel works in Shrewsbury with RR works numbers. The cabs follow the Sentinel design of being sloped, and this batch of locos was quite small, if my memory serves me right only 3. YE was owned by the United Steel Companies, who sold the goodwill and designs to RR, who in turn passed them on to Thomas Hill at Kilnhurst, who started out as Sentinel Steam loco agents, before being taken over by RR. I surprise myself with my own knowledge sometimes, although, I can't remember writing this! To a Mr.G of MM - I think I may have left my account logged on Its good to know you're an RMWEB'er too. Just for the record, I have no idea whatsoever about the history of the Janus loco regarding YE and RR! Cheers, Andy.
