Bachmann have made a lovely model but adding the details is a bit of a pain. You think there would be an exploded diagram showing where they go.Obvious ones are the vac pipes but what are these and where do they fit ? They look like tiebars of some sort and has anyone sawn the front coupling pocket off without breaking the guard irons ?

I think you will find that they fit between the driving wheel axels , I recall someone saying that they are a

tight fit and not easy to get in .

Hope that helps , I have not tried fitting mine yet . rolleyes.gif

They were the proverbial pain in the **** to fit properly- mine are not quite parallel to the ground, but were the best I could manage without damaging them. The coupling pocket , on the other hand, was a cinch- I just snipped it off, in situ, with a Xuron plastic cutter in two bites; no problems at all. It really is a lovely model.

Thanks Richard and Mike. That ugly fron coupling mount had to go and you were right about the tiebars going over the front drivers. It looks much better with all the bits added.I shall now add coal but shall I weather it ? ;)

.. They look like tiebars of some sort ...

That's because they are, of a specialised type combining horn gap stays, and a tie between these stays. Horn gap staying joined the open ends of the horn gaps in which the axleboxes were mounted, relieving the stress on the frame section above the horn gap: but not sufficiently in this case as the supplementary reinforcing patches riveted to the outside frame above each horn gap reveal, all very neatly represented on the model.

Ben's 'clean but not pristine' treatment rather adds tio the versimilitude IMO.

But how did you get the tie bar to fit ? I have tried all afternoon but it seems slightly too long. If I cut off the pins or trimmed off the end slot/tabs then I could glue it on with superglue. Would I ever need to take them off again ?

What about the part that fits on the tender footplate ? I cannot get the pins to fit in the holes. Again, are you supposed to cut off the pins and just glue it in position ? They should have had a whole separate sheet for the accessories pack.

It is a beautiful model though, and runs like a dream. It almost seems to have momentum or is that my imagination ? This is my first Bachmann loco. Are they all as good as this ?

The only problem with fitting them is if you want to sell the model as mint with the detail pack intact.Trim the tiebar and glue it.The tender piece I can't remember what I did but it is fitted now.Its a superb model but the accessories need factory fitting in my opinion and don't get me started on the front coupling.Email Bachmann for suggestions on the tender issue.

I have just realised that if you glue any of the parts such as the tie bars or tender piece then you would not be able to remove the body from the chassis. I will have another attempt without the glue.

I have finally fitted the tie bars...sort of. They do not fit as well as I would like but it is the best I can do for now. They should have given us a few extra tie bars to experiment with.

I thought it would be easy to change the front bogie : I took the existing bogie off but I cannot work out how the wheels come out ! There is nothing at all in the instructions about how to do it.I have removed the two tiny screws either side of the bogie and removed the side plates they were holding in position but the wheels still not do want to come out.

Has anybody removed the wheels and how is it done?

Why do you need to remove the wheels unless you're going EM/P4 ?

To swap the bogies ! I have cut the coupler pocket off the spare bogie and I had to remove the wheels from the existing bogie. Never mind, I find out how to do it by fiddling a bit with it. Spread the front and back of the bogie to release the wheels.

Now all I have to work out is how to fit the tender front footplate. It definitely will not fit into the holes provided. You cannot cut the pins off and glue it otherwise you will not be able to remove the tender body from the chassis should you need to.
