Eggesford box
In the layout topics there has been mention of making GRSM masts and their associated equipment. As yesterday was a nice day and my travels took me by such a creature I thought I might as well take a few photos for anyone interested in modeling them. Somewhat outside my modelling period but they have become a common feature of todays railway.
RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted March 20, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 20, 2012 David Its interesting to note how much these GSMR structures vary especially in the tyoe of handrails. The one at Banbury had tubular handrails IIRC (well thats how I have modelled them) but many like this have angle sections. The hut itself seems to be pretty much standard though. Eggesford box
Hi Ian, and walking back across from town and glancing up at the mast behind Banbury South box the fittings at the top of the mast are different.
RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted March 20, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 20, 2012 Yes i was going to mention that. The Banbury type seem to be more common - since modelling that one I keep looking at all the different ones that can vbe seen across the network these days - a whole new interest in the hobby... or is it just Sad?? On a similar line, I was just taking photos of the SHard when I fellow work collegue though I was sad doing building spotting... odd really when you think we are a consturction company!! RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted March 21, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 21, 2012 I'm assuming this is one, being erected on 9th March opposite the old gas works at Whitby (taken from Larpool viaduct). There was one more slightly smaller section after the one on it's way up and that looked like it would be the top one.
ess1uk
I'd got a thread started on this. Yes they all seem to be different, think it depends on who is the contractor installing them. i've not found 2 the same yet Nice pictures, better than the ones in my gallery. And it is GSMR
RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted April 3, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 3, 2012 Here is a master and hut close to New Mills station which can be seen from the foot crossing at the end of the platform
ess1uk
I've still only seen 1 layout try and model a GSMR mast and REB.
pointstaken
Unlike so many of the Photographs on here, there is a great deal of detail in these snaps which would help anyone modelling them. Commendable to say the least. Dennis
RJS1977
So that's what they're for! One appeared at my father's local station a few years ago and he made a model of it (using - of all things - a broken drumstick as the mast!) to cover the mounting for a reed switch which determines whether a train continues round the main circuit or is diverted up the Harbour Branch. RMweb Premium newbryford Posted April 17, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 17, 2016 GSMR = What ? Enlightenment sought, thank you ! Dennis Global System for Mobile communications - Railway. RMweb Premium newbryford Posted April 17, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 17, 2016 And if you dig a little deeper, you'd find the GSM-R is critically vital to the ERTMS/ETCS infrastructure, as any and all communication between train and central computer is done via this radio network. As GSM-R is digital radio, quality of the connection is greatly improved over old analogue radio transmissions. It also makes securing a connection a lot better, meaning outside interference is effectively eliminated and conversations cannot be interrupted, intercepted and/or manipulated by a 3rd party. More abbreviations: ERTMS - European Rail Traffic Management System. ETCS - European Train Control System Cheers, Mick
FelixM
It's a simple equation: ERTMS = ETCS + GSM-R + Eurocab.

ess1uk
good to see some more appearing in model form And mine.....nice cameo on the REB the BTS (GSM-R radio kit) is just to the right as you go in the door so the feeders come out just up and to the right of the door for the antennas.
