Manchester MMRS Exhibition - 6th/7th October 2012

Recommended Posts

Hello and welcome to the first publication of details for the Manchester Model Railway Societies 2012 exhibition. This will be our 76th show and follows on from our exquisite 75th show last year. This is the first large exhibition that I have managed so I do hope I can count on your support! Although I am ‘in charge’ (& accountable!), I do have quite a large team at my disposal so firstly, I want to give my thanks to them and my predecessor, Andy Cooper who I assisted last year and who is assisting me this year.

The location will be the same as for the previous two years, The Armitage Centre, Moseley Road, Fallowfield, Manchester. M14 6ZT.

Saturday 6th October 2012 10AM to 6PM

Sunday 7th October 2012 10AM to 5PM

This year we will have new caterers so there should be a better meal service available.

Directions;

The Armitage Centre is on Moseley Road in Fallowfield, near the Owens Park student hall of residence (the tower block is visible for some miles).

By car: with Satnav use the postcode M14 6ZT. There is plenty of car parking on site. If you do not have sat nav and are unsure which route to use, the Armitage Centre is well signposted from a number of directions. Click on this link for Multimap, Streetmap:

By train the nearest stations are Mauldeth Road (on the Airport line) and Levenshulme (between Stockport and Piccadilly) which are both about 20 minutes walk away. If arriving in the City Centre then it may be easier to walk (or take a tram) to Piccadilly Gardens and then catch a bus, as below.

By bus: Wilmslow Road is one of the busiest bus routes in the country, with numbers 41, 42, 43, 44, 46, 48, 140, 142, 143 all stopping at Owens Park, a 5 minute walk away. From the City Centre use Piccadilly Gardens bus stands G, H or J. From Oxford Road Station walk down the station ramp and cross Oxford Road to a Southbound bus stop.

The new caterers have sent us a sample menu for approval, Ive got to say this looks a lot better than the previous crew! There will also be more room for the catering / and dining area this year so people can sit down and eat in comfort.

I had my annual grapple with the Virginontheridiculous Trains website a few days ago and my advance tickets are secured. I was going to come on the Sunday this year but it would have cost significantly more and taken longer so Saturday it is. Those coming by public transport would have enjoyed the bus ride I had last year - the lady driver of the 48 was an absolute star, making me wonder if she was a descendant of Boudicca [she with the chariot and the knives on the wheels]. White knuckles are a small price to pay!

really looking forward to this show as it feels like ages since we have last been out with our layout Kinlet wharf.

We have a few new trains ready for a first run at Manchester. We have the Structure gauging train and the NMT and possibly the Scotrail Sleeper if we can get it finished.

Really cant wait for this one!!

Just one week to go now!

I'm really looking forward to this - there looks to be such a great line-up of stunning layouts, I can't wait to meet everyone who's going to be bringing their pride & joy!

Sadly, EMGS has cancelled due to lack of staff available - are they all still tired out from the George Carnell 'do'?

See y'all there!

I was slighltly suprised to hear about the EMGS. We had arranged for "our" display boards (that we keep for the shws we cover this side of the Pennines) to be available for the show only last week. At that point, two volunteers were available to man the stand. So it must be a last minute problem and finding people as replacements at such short notice isn't easy.

For an part of the country such as the one around Manchester, which was one of the main areas for the development of EM, back in the 1950s, to not have any EMGS members available to man the stand is very sad.

This will be the first Manchester show for several years that I don't get to. Sadly, financial and time pressures don't really allow a full day out, costing the best part of £50 in fuel and entrance plus a bite to eat, especially after two consecutive shows at EXPO EM North and Halifax. To do 3 weekends out of 4 is pushing it, even for me!

As a confirmed EM enthusiast, there only appears to be one layout, the delightful Culm, which I was opposite at EXPO, so I saw it for the whole 2 days, so at least I am not missing an EM fest.

There is also one layout, which has assaulted my hearing continuously at a couple of previous shows. Seeing that it is at Manchester was enough to eliminate any wavering thoughts about going. I would want to spend most of the day there and with that layout in the hall, I would be wanting to leave after about half an hour.

This is purely a personal view and I know many people think the layout involved is one of the best on the circuit, so I hope that people support the show well. Manchester show has been one of the highlights of the show season for many a long year and I wish the new exhibition manager and the club all the best for a cracking good weekend.

I'm really pleased that folk are looking forward to coming - I'm looking forward to it too but, having given up smoking three weeks ago, I think I'll need a couple of crafty drags as I'm starting to get rather nervous now!

Here's lookin' at you, kid(s)

I have Mother and and Mother in law living in Manchester. Looks like this weekend is the only weekend available in October for a visit. With Manchester traffic the journey could be delayed for about five hours in Fallowfield on the way from Sale to Audenshaw.

Looking forward to the weekend, I will be there with Bradfield GS (together with The Laird, Leander and some form of Leopard(??)), making one of it's last appearances before the developers move in!!!!!

Come and say hello if you are there.

Just come back from putting up the banner on the outside pitch fences with Tony W. It was somewhat piddling it down, but morale (rather than morals) were kept up by the University Womens Lacrosse teams in training on the other side of the fence :-)

And to Wordsell Forever who left a message on my Facebook (and anyone else remotely interested) I am informed they are out on Saturday morning!

^^^ It will be great to see you there, buddy!

I hope young 'un does enjoy it - please let us know if he prefers the 'Childrens' layout or one of the more 'adult' (should I say "grown up"?) oriented layouts.

NOT that we have any 'adult' themed layouts (I hope not, anyway!).

The views outside the exhibition venue should satisfy that!

Cheers,

John E.

John

Good luck with your first exhibition and best wishes from your friends at Mickleover.

We have sent you Graham and Glenn with Aberdeen Kirkhill but I don't know if you'll get any more of our members there as it's our show the same weekend !

If anyone isn't going to Manchester, then consider Mickleover (Derby) as the smaller alternative

Details here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/61864-mickleover-derby-october-6-7/

Cheers

Mike
