Custom made decals/transfers

Recommended Posts

Les, yes, John Peck at Precision Transfers can do them. I've used him for both 4mm and G scale stuff, highly recommended. For mine, I've done the artwork and John prints them off. As Satans Goldfish says, you can do some yourself on an inkjet, I've done some myself, but you will be limited as to the colours you can produce.

If you can give some idea of what you are looking for we might be able to offer some more specific suggestions.

To make your own you need to get decal paper, Crafty Computer Paper are perhaps the best known in the UK and reasonably priced. A Google search will find them. Others are available, some on eBay, not sure how good the cheaper ones are. Needs to suit your printer, ink jet or laser, and is available in clear or white. Essentially, make up your artwork and print as normal. Once dry a couple of light coats of a matt acrylic spray to seal and waterproof them. Cut out, soak and apply, just like Airfix.

Limitations, you obviously cannot print white and light colours, e.g. yellow are translucent, on clear decal paper the background will show through and the yellow will all but disappear. You can print them on white decal paper but then you've a white background around your lettering.

Yep, like arthur says. I use crafty computer paper both clear and white. Depending on the job depends which I use, I have tried a couple of diferent ways to get around the white and light colour issues. Let us know what you would like printing and I'll let you know the possibilities. Using colour laser I've had no issues.

I've been experimenting with Crafty Computer Papers waterslide decal paper to make graffiti and it works pretty well. I went for the laser version as it doesn't need lacquering before you apply it to a model. But you do have to put the laser printer settings onto the hottest / thickest / coated paper setting otherwise it won't get hot enough to make the toner stick to the decal paper, as I found out to my dismay!

Our studio laser printer now has graffiti'd rollers as a result!

Other than that it seems to work fine :)

I've used Crafy Computer Paper very successfully for colour decals with both white backed and clear paper although as Arthur says, printing yellow onto clear paper doesn't work. If you want white on a black panel, you can print in negative form i.e. the text is clear and the background black, so the text comes out white because the paper is white. If you need white text on a clear background you need a specialist printer which most of us can't afford. If this is what you want try John at Cambridge Custom Transfers who is a member of this forum. His forum name is cctransuk so you could pm him or simply look at his website and contact him through that, http://www.cctrans.freeserve.co.uk/

I'm not sure if he prints up to G scale, but I'll be surprised if he doesn't.

Ian,

You forgot the most important point - and I quote from my web-site (the most relevant sections are in red) :-

CUSTOM SERVICE

Whilst I cannot offer any form of bespoke or one-off transfer service, I will consider requests for transfer sheets to be added to my range which are not already covered by other manufacturers.

My own specialist knowledge relates to the BR steam era; (ie. from Nationalisation up to the mid-sixties, but not including the later 'boxed' style of rolling stock lettering), so requests should be confined to this period.

Specially requested sheets which are accepted for production will be added to my standard range, and the cost in most cases will therefore be the same as for a standard sheet.

Please note that I cannot consider commissions for other periods, or requests to print from customers' own designs, as the research and formatting involved is prohibitively time-consuming.

Apologies if these conditions exclude your pet project.  I am, after all, just a fellow-modeller who can print transfers. I must keep some time for my own modelling!

Regards,

John Isherwood,

Cambridge Custom Transfers.

I've had some decals printed by John that I designed. The quality of his printed sheets is stunning.

I invariably point enquirers for transfers which are outside my remit to John Peck / Precision labels - I hear nothing but praise for his products.

Many thanks to everyone for your help.

Specifically I am looking for G scale transfers for the Orient Express,i.e.The Crest(Two Lions holding The Cypher encircled by a banner and Laurel Leaves) for the side of the Coach and the Inscription "COMPAGNIE INTERNATIONALE DES WAGONS-LITS" which goes along the top of the side of the Coach just below the roof line.

I imagine I would have to see if anyone would accept a commission to make them as I doubt they are commercially available, unless anyone knows any different.

Regards

Les

In my home town we have one of those high street printers who seems to have all the lates top of the range equipment has any one ever tried making the program up loading it on a stick or such like and seeing if this type of place can print decals with lighter colours etc.
