Hornby black 5 front bogie

Recommended Posts

Hi there. I am wondering whether it's possible to do a simple mod to improved the front end look of a black 5 by swapping the front bogie unit for either a patriot / scot bogie or a standard 4 bogie. I've been studying the service sheets

To see if I can work out whether this will work, but though I'd ask if anyone on here has actually done it

Thanks in advance

This is something I have been planning to try for some long time now,but never getting around to it though. However, I did modify the bogie setting somewhat see here- http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/62/entry-3478-kyleskus-black-fives/, which might give you some ideas. There is another later entry covering the Brass master fret  that I later used to improve visual details.

The bogie supplied on the 7P Patriot has one good feature, you can turn it round to leave the NEM pocket inboard, and that gives easy scope for modification and improvement so the front of it actually looks better. Doesn't the B5 still have the old swing arm bogie mounting? You would have to fit a swing arm of your own making to the Pate bogie which is designed for post mounting. Or mod the B5 to give it a bogie post - which is the better method.

Comet do a suitable etch brass bogie for £4.50 - it allows for use of swing arm (the one Comet supply is slightly too short, use the original Hornby one) or pivot.

Use the original 5 bogie. Remove bogie from loco. Remove wheels from bogie. Saw off the "concrete slab" by keeping blade level with guard irons.

cut a slot back as far as the 'ole for coupling. (It should look like a with the botom filled in). You will need to add some lead to compensate but the visual improvement is great.
