    Evening All.

     

    Oxfam was Oxfammed - the loss of the assistant manager to another job, and illness among volunteers meant that I was back office, plus stocking the shelves, and the manager was on the till, and frantically ringing round her (decreasing) list of volunteers.  It was only after a couple of hours that we got a full compliment of management plus two volunteers.

     

    At home, 30747 was working on a cabinet which we bought over the weekend, and which is destined to be shabby chic - or to put it another way, can't get all the paint off.  Also not helped by my not being able to find my detail sander - which I have seen and used since we moved, but seem to have mislaid!

     

    Other than that, not a lot to say.

    Afternoon All,

     

    Choice was the football or the village fete at Eastham - the latter won - and while we were there, England lost.  The fete started at 12.00 and we got there before it started - it is one of these events where they will not sell anything until noon - there was some bric a brac for 30474 and a whole half a tent of books for me - I got 9 railway books for £11.00, which I thought was pretty good, as two of them were volumes 1 and 2 of "Great Railway Wonders of the World" - in very good condition for books which are pre-nationalisation - I have yet to find a publ ication date, but I suspect they are pre-war, so just over £1 each seems a bargain.  More research needed.

     

    Meantime, 30747 was digging onto the contents of somebody's jewellery box, and actually told the ladies that some of the stuff was too good to sell at a fete and needed to go to a jeweller for evaluation or possibly to scrap.  She did, however, get a few pieces for herself - a VIctorian mourning brooch with a lock of hair in it (9ct gold with seed pearls), and a bag containing six (I think) silver bangles all fully hallmarked - for the same price as I paid for the books - no idea what my haul might be worth, but she reckons hers is about £70 for the brooch and about the same for the bangles.  More research needed.

     

    Worth missing the match?  I should say so.

     

    On the way home we saw that somebody's Sunday was ruined - there was a people carrier in Tenbury Wells on its roof, having somehow struck a building - police were directing traffic round it - but the flatbed was already there, so we were lucky, as when that was deployed and the remains of the vehicle restored to its correct orientation the road would have to be closed - just on a junction of two main roads.

    Usually luncheon meat rather than proper Spam - but no less tasty for that - the Hungerford chippy's are round - but Angel Lane chippy in Penrith used to do the real thing - rectangular.  They may still, but I haven't been there since we moved

     

    I may or may not be here tomorrow, as I'm having intermittent broadband outages which appear to be related to the rainfall.

    Nice to meet a fellow Spam lover - though I prefer it done in batter - there are only a handful of chip shops sell them now - one of the best is in Hungerford, and another is in Cirencester.  On the 1970s supermarket, they made it seem as though Spam was a thing of the past - but Rusty Lee did a recipe for the fritters - seemed a bit off, just flour and water, then fried in some sort of posh oil - but we know better and it's still easily obtained - which reminds me, I must buy a tin when next in Tesco or Morrison's - Aldi just dont sell it.

     

    Afternoon All

     

    AWOL again - the litre can of woodstain arrived yesterday so it has been deployed on the bathroom door and the rest of the skirting board - all of our internal woodwork is unpainted, and could all do with a freshen up - but brushing on woodstain is a much easier job than painting - and it is evening out all the slightly discoloured wood.

     

    Went to the Ludow writers summer social last night - first time I'd been in a pub for over two years - haven't prices in these establishments gone up - just under three quid for a bottle of diet Coke.  I think I'll not bother again.

     

    30747 has just wrapped and labelled all the presents for Christmas - she's late this year - usually done before Easter - some years it's done in January as soon as the presents are bought in the January sales.

     

    Any retro music lovers, this came into my inbox this morning.
