  1. I am correct in thinking the green gladiator gun available now with an 18” gun is correct for WWII and the Bosch Buster in camo is wrong for WWI because it originally had a 14” barrel ? unless there doing 2 different barrels ?
  2. Thinking about buying the set for Thorpe Marsh Power Station for the early 1960s but would these have been mixed with other hopper wagons like the Hornby Ex LNER type and the Parkside BR Hopper kit ?
  3. Looking for info on early diesel types for a layout based north of knottingley around ferrybridge power station already done some research but can’t find much info on diesels seen here in the early 1960s
  4. Thanks for the info looked through some more books and apart from the usual opens, vans and minerals found a single 14 ton tank wagon, a plate wagon and a rake of milk tanks with a van might be a stove R
  5. The western region diverted a lot of freight from 1958 but having gone through some books, all the freight trains just seem to consist of a few opens, vans and mineral wagons, before and after 1958 ! were there any other types of freight before 58, ore, fuel, steel, cattle ?
  6. Thanks for the replies, I knew B12s went to Southampton on Ambulance trains I’ve got a photo of one double headed with a grange at Shawford junction, I was looking at Evercreech Junction around 1961 but also want to run some wartime trains on my layout, found out that Poole Hamworthy was used to supply fuel. I think the S & D suits model railways very scenic with lots of tunnels, bridges, hillside lines, lots of double heading, banking and short freights especially if you have tight curves
  7. I remember seeing the SECR C Class on sale for £75 when they first came out ! although I’m not sure if the all got this livery, I think the plainer Green would have been more common until WW1, and still no LMS crimson compound ?
  8. Would there have been much military traffic on the S & D for the run up to D Day ? Fuel ? Not sure how Bournemouth / Poole was used in the war And Just read that the LMS withdrew 4Fs and 2Ps during the war and that T9s and Crabs were used
  9. Mine arrived 2 weeks ago with some bits loose in the box, used their contact from and emailed with no response anyone know their returns address ?
  10. One formation I was looking at was a 10 coach all ExLMS yet the photo showed an 8 coach formation with a Hawkeswoth SK followed by a Collett SK, I thought the date of the photo might be wrong but the 9F was only there in 1960, I guess they used whatever they had to form the Saturday holiday trains
  11. I`ve just been researching the S & D and thinking about doing Evercreech Jcn, I was looking at the Pines but RTR you need a Verstible Composite Open CO, Bachmann do the FO so you could use that, most of the eastern coaches look like Gresleys, you could use Thompsons BSKs and CKs June - September 1960 RTR BOURNEMOUTH - MANCHESTER (PINES EXPRESS) TWThO LMR stock ERMK1BSK-LNERCK-MK1SK-MK1BSK-CK-MK1BSK-CO-12wheelRS-MK1SO-MK1SK-MK1CK-MK1BCK MFO MK1SK-MK1BSK-CK-(MK1BSK(FO))-CK-MK1BSK-CO-12wheelRS-MK1SO-MK1SK-MK1CK-MK1BCK Bradford - Bournemouth FO ER stock BSK-SK-CK-CK-SK-SK-SK-BSK-SK-BSK Birkenhead - Bournemouth WR Stock MK1SK-MK1SK-MK1SK-MK1BSK-MK1SK-MK1SO-?RC-MK1FK-BSK-SK-SK using the coach formations from the Train Marshalling lists you could do Forthcoming Hornby 399 set SUMMER only R4840 R4842 R4841 BOURNE - BIRM OR BOURNE - SHEFF ER stock MO MK1SK-MK1BSK-CK-SK-CK-SK-BSK BOURNE - BIRM TWThO ER stock MK1BSK-CK-SK-SK-SK-CK-SK-BSK DERBY - BOURNE FO LMR stock BSK-SK-SK-CK-CK-SK-SK-BSK Forthcoming Bachmann Bulleid coach set WINTER only I was going to do a Saturday as there were a lot more passenger trains and I think locos like the West Countries would have been more common My coach Formations SO BOURNEMOUTH - MANCHESTER LMR MK1SK-MK1BSK-CK-CK-MK1BSK-CO-RS-MK1SO-MK1SK-MK1SK-MK1CK-MK1BCK BOURNEMOUTH - MANCHESTER LMR BSK-SK-SK-SK-CK-CK-SK-SK-SK-BSK MANCHESTER - BOURNEMOUTH LMR *BSK-CK-SK-CK-BSK-SK-SK-SK-SK-BSK Cleethorpes - Exmouth ER SK-SK-BSK-CK-SK-SK-BSK-CK
  12. Yes I could change to 1961 and use the forthcoming Hornby BR Green 399 Maunsell and Bulleid 3 set, although I would also need some Maroon coaches but could add 1956 1P (withdrawn?) 2P 3F 4F Jinty Black 5 Ivatt 2-6-2 BR Class 5 BR Class 4 2-6-0 BR Class 4 4-6-0 7F West Country 1961 BR 3MT 2-6-2 8F Rebuilt West Country Collect Goods 57xx ? 9F double chimney
  13. Thanks for the replies, I’m sticking with 1956 as all my coaches are crimson cream, noticed Hornby are bringing out a S & D 3 coach set 399 in BR green, could I get away with running these in 1956 ? Got 2P 3F 4F Jinty Black 5 Ivatt 2-6-2 BR Class 5 BR Class 4 2-6-0 BR Class 4 4-6-0 Need 7F West Country R3016 BR Class 4 1P
  14. I’ve gone through a few books, one says BR 3MT 2-6-2, Ivatt 4MT and 8Fs although I think they replaced the 7Fs later, also I have a OO works Johnson 2F but not sure if it’s the correct type or how long they lasted
  15. Having planned a layout between Birmingham and Derby mid 50s to run around my double garage, I was thinking about representing a section of the S&D on 1 wall as it will be all scenic and as I already have a lot of suitable Ex LMS and BR locos, would be a good excuse to run some foreign types, southern Pacific’s, Maunsell coaches ? Already got 2P 3F 4F Jinty Black 5 Ivatt 2-6-2 BR Class 5 BR Class 4 2-6-0 BR Class 4 4-6-0 Need 7F ? ? And I can still run some of the trains from my 1956 train formations; 534 NEWCASTLE-BOURNEMOUTH GWR stock *BTK-TK-TK-CK-CK-TK-TK-BCK 347 NEWCASTLE-BOURNEMOUTH ER MK1 *BSK-FK-RU(LNER)-SO-SO-SO-SO-SK-BSK
  16. The RTR manufactures don’t seem too interested in wagons that didn’t last into the BR era, Hornby put new chassis on their 3 4 and 6 plank wagons however it’s a bit too modern for the wagons, there’s also the Dapol 5 and 7 plank 9ft wheelbase wagons although I’m not sure if these are accurate, maybe oxford rail will bring out some 1907 RCH types, there also doing some early 12 ton fuel wagons
  17. I’m trying to find the correct markings for grey TTA and TEA oil tankers for my 1980 layout between Birmingham and Derby, I think they should be debranded with Hazchem code box but not sure about TOPS codes and other markings as most of the photos are just so dirty you can’t tell and should the Hazchem codes all be the same?
  18. I think some Pre grouping wagons RCH 1907 types, 10 ton coal wagons they could do loads of liveries and for later era we still need a decent LMS van, and a NER 20 ton wooden hopper would be nice
  19. Want to run a milk train in early 1930s livery GWR area, are these wagons accurate? I understand they were rebuilt as 6 wheelers in the 30s maybe mix with Hornby Dapol wagons from the same milk company ?
  20. I think it’s a good model of a 1923 RCH 5 plank wagon, wondered why it wasn’t selling well, still loads around in the sale sections, I’m waiting for someone to do some 1907 RCH types think they would sell well.
  21. Shame I think the 7 plank is wrong with the old stretched body and steel under frame, and the the smaller size 3 4 and 6 plank wagons to RCH 1887 / 1907 ? specs would have had grease axle boxes throughout their lives, 5 planks OK though
  22. not sure the axle box`s are correct on the 3, 4 and 6 plank wagons
  23. In my Big four in colour book there are 2 photos of the Birkenhead to Bournemouth trains, from 1938 a Schools with GWR Collett bow end stock at Eastleigh and in 1939 a mixed GWR and SR set at Oxford N15 hauled and found the SR formation as a maunsell set 459 BTK-TK-CK-Dining-CK-TK-BTK if the GWR formation was the same I could do that RTR with Hornby Colletts and a Railroad Restaurant coach, I doubt I could do a LNER formation RTR as theres only the Hornby Gresley BCK TK FK, do have a set of Gresley suburbans though and have lots of LMS stock for a troop train P1 and P3 coaches as well as the suburbans, got a few formations for armour : GWR Artillery loco BV BCK TK 8 x Rectank 8 x Macaw 6 x 12 ton wagons BV HQ Tank loco 28xx BT T Ramp 3 x warflat Ramp BT Tank loco 28xx BT T Ramp 9 x warflat Ramp T BT and Fuel Class A Hornby 20 Ton and Bachmann 14 Ton Tank Repainted battleship grey
  24. Thanks for the replies probably north of Eastleigh as it's a 4 track mainline running through the countryside which would include trains from the midlands, Oxford via the DN&S to Portsmouth but not from Cardiff, found a couple of photos of B12/3s on American ambulance trains being double headed by a Grange and a 5303 Mogul south of Oxford so must have have travelled on this route, haven't got that much stock at the moment though
  25. Doing some research for a WW2 1944 layout as I want a mix of GWR and SR locos thinking about this route to Southampton with DN&S lines bringing in GWR Locos this is what I think would be seen that's available RTR 28xx 2251 M7 T9 N Class N15 Q1 WD not sure about other types of RTR locos using this route 700 Class, C Class, S15, Schools (LMS black 5 8F) ?
