  1. Bit early timewise, but spotted this pic of a Leeds-Stratford working in 1970 (scroll down for info in the comments) http://www.time-capsules.co.uk/picture/show/3759/Bank-notes-on-the-move EDIT: just noticed it was taken by Keith Long, so a better version might be in his cabsaab900 Flickr
  2. It was because the ETH cable box under the RH buffer and the socket under the LH buffer would be hidden behind (or would prevent the fitment of) the 3-piece snowploughs
  3. Apparently ZTR, which seems to be general Departmental brake van (ie not a runner/ match vehicle)
  4. I'm afraid I've pretty much exhausted my limited knowledge of brake vans! So I couldn't say if it was a real example or not - maybe a more 'recent' eg sector-era livery as grey seemed to come back in as a livery. Of course in BR days grey usually meant unfitted/unpiped. TBH I thought someone would've been on to confirm or not by now
  5. The brake vans I had in mind were TOPS code CAR, examples here: http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/brbrakediag507 I think you may be right about the propelling ones having larger yellow panels (or wasps) There are also some CAQ ones in grey
  6. Brake vans usually had those yellow panels if they were air-piped with guard's brake valve, often used when a propelling move was needed. More usually seen on bauxite vans - is it a specific prototype? I think these vans were often stencilled with their route/usage
  7. Found it on realtime trains (first time using it): 0Z47 polmadie CMD to craigendoran jn.: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/R03449/2016/01/26/advanced EDIT: noticed 0Z48 returned half an hour later - would this be for route learning?
  8. No pics but spotted what looked like 2 sleeper 73s light engine through Exhibition Centre station, westbound at about 10.40 last night. At the wrong bit of the platform so couldn't see clearly, but definitely odd to hear a diesel of some sort coming through the tunnels!
  9. A thread from a while ago about the PTA match wagons: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/101007-translator-vehicle-for-iron-ore-rotary-tippler-wagons/&do=findComment&comment=1950842
  10. no problems Derek, I realise in trying to abbreviate the Ts&Cs surrounding such posts, I may have seemed dismissive of them. No such intention, more like laziness on my part!
  11. Derek, apologies if I sounded glib, I'm very respectful of copyright, it's just all the copy/pasting/attributing to I'm not sure of! here's the 'homepage' for all the diagrams: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Railways_Junctions_Diagram_1914
  12. as an aside, I wonder how the RCH RJDs help/hinder the matters in this thread? (date seems to be in the lower left corner) Paddington area: king's cross area: (posted to Wikimedia with all the usual guff re: copyright etc)
  13. that's just showing off - I'm surprised they bothered to put a train in the picture at all
  14. I know lens flare can be the photographer's nemesis when shooting into bright light (real or otherwise), but either by luck or design you manage to get a bit of vague flare which gives the impression of diesel fumes - here you can imagine one of the locos ticking over on a cold, still night. One of the others I remember was of your Strathclyde 107 in the platform of WW and it looked exactly like the blue fug which would hang about the station, especially with DMUs around. Accidental maybe, but more successful than trying to photoshop some not-very-convincing smoke in! Also reinforces the importance of lighting to a layout - many can look 'realistic' but it takes good lighting (real or otherwise) to make a layout look 'real'. All the best to you Dave after your recent worries, keep on keeping on!
  15. there's a 1980 notice on the resignalling of Ladybank on the s-r-s website: http://www.s-r-s.org.uk/pullfree.asp?FilePath=ArchiveSignals\Downloads\brscot&FileName=1980-ladybank.pdf(PDF download) p.5 (p.6 of PDF) has the signalling diagram and on p.3 (p.4 of the PDF) it mentions signal EB657 (down fife line) as having three 'draw-ahead' indications: G - towards down goods loop L - towards up and down loop S - towards branch siding no idea of the present layout, but would seem that they've kept what they could - I suppose it's easier to re-use if they can?
  16. Love the 20 in J1403 - it's so manky, they've had to clear a patch so you can see the number!
  17. listing at abrail database: http://www.abrail.co.uk/(click on 'electric locos') (seems to be updated regularly, others will know if it's accurate or not)
  18. would be 'Inter-City' i.e. what was current for the time - no special designations during the cl.27 p-p era Scotrail or ScotRail only existed from about '84/'85(?), under the directorship of Chris Green
  19. Great pic again pagey! For the few pics you took, you seemed to have a knack for capturing the unusual or interesting. Not only do we have 3 driving cars, one of them is still in early blue with small numbers (albeit in pretty manky condition) With pics like these, absolute quality is largely irrelevant given the interesting content
  20. Very common on the 26s and 27s - that window is either shut (rare), sitting inwards at a 45 degree angle or completely open/missing! EDIT : found mention of it in an older thread and it was as noted above - to enable the fireman to look out when filling the water, but it was mentioned the water hatch was panelled over quite early on. After that, you'd think they'd just be reglazed with a sealed window
  21. IMG_0833 - somewhere around finnieston, in Glasgow? clydeside expressway on the leftt, the train could be heading for either central LL or queen st. LL depending if it's reached kelvinhaugh jn. yet
  22. Great pics pagey, d'you have a date for the DMU shots? '75/'76 maybe? Just asking as the units still have 1st class, eventually they were 2nd class only. Notice also the leading unit in the 3rd pic has a DTC in place of a TC
  23. J1409 - 1A16 at that time was the down 'Flying Scotsman' - looks like there's an RMB as well as a restaurant car.
  24. A former Butlins station? Long platforms and plenty of storage sidings
