  1. No guesses yet? You may have to use your "little grey cells"....
  2. I nearly got lynched at ExpoEM last year when I commented that a derailment on one of the layouts was probably due to the rails being too far apart!
  3. Was there an Arkwight box as well? And if so, was it Open all hours?
  4. As to the latest square, it's where the Ascot-Aldershot line goes under the LSWR main line at Farnborough: Bizarrely, the conductor rail on one of the disused curves remained in place and energised long after the running rails were lifted as it provided an important electrical connection between the two routes! Now, where's this?
  5. The tricky part of any mod is going to be rewheeling owing to rthe cast metal bogies. If you find a way to do this, let me know how you get on!
  6. is wondering if anyone else has ever transported a 10' exhibition layout... by bicycle?

There was a layout that travelled by train a few years ago, rested on an ironing board. Can't remember any other details though.

Sorry, I can't supply photos as the move has already taken place (this morning!) and I doubt will be repeated on the way back! I was carrying the layout by hand (two 5' boards, the scenic board able to fit between the carrying handles of the FY) with the stock/controller bag on my shoulder when a kind gentleman with a bicycle asked if he could help! I put the stock bag in the rear basket and laid the boards on top, running from the rear basket to the handlebars, with one of...

  7. That's right - both houses where I grew up are featured on the map! The railway line (ex LNWR Styal loop) was used as a landmark by the winner of the London - Manchester air race.
  8. OK - hint time. This line is electrified at 25kV, and played a minor part in the history of British aviation.
  9. It was supposed to have said "Welcome to Swansea"
  10. That's here: But where is this?
  11. started building his first etched brass kit yesterday. Well, I've got two bits together so far! More positively though, at least I fixed one of the electrical issues on my main lyout and made some progress on Niederau.

  13. Several members of Reading Society of Model Engineers have (or had) 5" gauge LT electrics. As regards layouts, there are a couple of models of the Croydon tramways around. And there are some models of the IoW with the ex-LT tube stock (do they count?). AFAIK none of the Alderney railway yet.... And of course, there's always a certain article in the April 1984 Railway Modeller.... ;-) I did once come up with a plan for a garage layout "Edgware Street", representing parts of the H&C, Met, Circle, District, Piccadilly and Jubilee lines - I think I've still got the drawing somewhere. if it turns up, I'll scan it in and post it here.
  14. Now there's a thought - fitting a 14XX body on a Faller Car System chassis! Forgot to mention that Tangmere will also be at the NNR event to 'represent' Combe Martin's appearance in the opening sequence (will work a charter from KX), though as far as I'm aware no Castles or Halls for the ending....
  15. I can remember Lion being steamed at MoSI in the 80s - and have read an article somwhere where Liverpool Museum weren't ruling out the possibility of a return to steam at some point in the future, Incidentally Lion's tender was damaged during filming and the damage is still there! I wonder what happened to the replica that was also used in filming....
  16. The North Norfolk Railway are holding a Titfield Thunderbolt day in June to mark the film's 60th anniversary. This will include the "other" W & U coach (twin to the one in the film), a 14XX (painted black specially for the weekend), the roller, a Bedford OB & Ivo Peters' Bentley (he photographed much of the filming).
  17. My parents live near the bottom of your map and can see the old trackbed from their kitchen window (Saundersfoot Railway).
  18. (The red dotted line is a footpath along a disused railway line - but which one?)
  19. Old Basing (Just west of Basingstoke)? The "Ba" on the extreme right was the giveaway, along with the clue about an E-W line. After drawing blanks on Bath and Badminton, Basingstoke was next...
  20. Fetch the barrow. the Major has a train to catch...

  21. The BBC also have Ben Ando (one of the ModelRail staff!).... Are the people who say the money spent on HS1 would be better spent on schools, hospitals, police the same people who want schools, hospitals, police sacrificed to pay for a reduction in petrol tax?
  22. I'm working (on and off) on using Microsoft Train Simulator or Open Rails as an analogue controller with the program providing the sound. No, it won't be "through the rails" (though if I can integrate it into OR properly I can probably work the speaker balance), but I reckon the cost of the hardware will be approximately the same as DCC sound fitting 1 loco and I have a large fleet!
  23. Not sure the corridor connections should be quite so brightly illuminated (only the headcode panels should be lit!). You may want to paint the end doors black then do a fresh coat of yellow (or paint the inside black if you can get at it!)
  24. Sounds about right - I think I'd just seen off an XX38 departure to Wallingford (timetable says XX35 but we usually wait for the XX37 from Oxford), and I think the Wallingford train was also a few minutes late having slowed to give Santa enough time to distribute the presents!
  25. If you're anywhere in the Thames Valley, the MERG Thames Valley Area Group are running a series on PICs starting this Tuesday evening at Grazeley Village Hall. I thought about building a motorised traverser at my last address, but hadn't figured it all out before I moved house. After moving, I had enough room to add a fan of pointwork before the traverser so am connecting the points up to a laptop using CBUS (integrated to the operating sequence), which will mean the only thing I need to do to the traverser itself is pick it up and turn it round when all the trains are facing the wrong way!
