Then the news that Fred , our model railway club chair was found dead by his son.

He was mainly N gauge modeller but dabbled in other scales. Ex RAF armourer who had so many tales from his service in Northern Ireland, Aden, Hong Kong and the Falklands he could hold court all night.

    RIP Fred.

    Hi

I’m sorry to hear that as I knew Fred many years ago when I was a member of the Cleethorpes N gauge group and he used to come over from Lincoln.

What helps curb the "enthusiasm" of young drivers is an insurance "black box" which many people choose to have to keep insurance costs down to merely "obscene".  They detect speeding, harsh acceleration and braking etc and deduct points. Lose too many points and to get your insurance cancelled.

    Hi

Not In my experience it doesn’t and the Police don’t seem interested in the data even after a fatal accident.

Paul , do you have the drawing?

    Hi

I used the ones from the diagram books on the Barrowmore website for the basic dimensions

    Hi

I scratchbuilt one in 1/148 not too hard a job with the slab sides and Railtec do the transfers in 2mm, 3mm, 4mm and 7mm scales.

I had a double take originally, thinking it was 4mm scale. Excellent work. Are the retaining rods for the vents just plasticard too?

    Hi

Yes they are from 0.3mm Plastruct rod MR-10P. I made a jig to set the V and the length of the legs with a further jig to cut the bottom part to length.

The channel on the sides is fabricated from three pieces of 0.25mm x 0.50mm strip as there isn't anything commercially available that is small enough.

Picture of one I built about eight years ago

I bought a couple of ferryvan chassis  at Doncaster from the society to make a couple of these (having found a photo of 2 of them at Oban and in other WHL photos) so your photos are a great encouragement. I take it from Andy's comments and the fact that you are now resin casting these that the etches are no longer available ?

    Regards,

    Ian.

    Hi

Correct they were from Etched Pixels originally for the Mill Lane Sidings BR Ferry Van. I can't see them being run again as the NGS now does a RTR BR Ferry Van and Etched Pixels is no more though items have been distributed to various other people (2mm SA for one).

Is that a 3D printed model? Looks great.

    Hi

It's made from various thicknesses of plasticard and microstrip. The W Irons, wheels, vacuum cylinder, buffer heads, axleboxes and springs are from the 2mm SA. The air cylinder and distributor are from the TPM 100T tanker detailing set.

I also found three sheets of etched ferry van ventilators, I didn’t know I had.

    Hi

I used my last set to cast some in resin so I now have an endless supply 😀 and have just used some to create four more Belgian Ferry vans to diagram E266

Yes I’ve seen a few things about this, but the points seem to be working fine here with no mods unless it’s something that will happen with continued DCC use?

Only issue I’ve noticed so far is when I’ve accidentally run a loco over a point that’s set the wrong way - I get an overload. What else will happen?

    Hi

Don’t bother. This advice is generally for OO points. I have sixty unmodified Peco code 55 N gauge points on my layout and have not had any issues in the last twenty years.

Out for a chug through the countryside today on our motorcycles we found ourselves filtering through traffic and up ahead is a VW Golf with clouds of armpit smelling weed smoke coming out of the windows.

Coming into the next town on our round trip we pass a Ford Focus, different car, same problem, both drivers oblivious to what was going on around them.

It occurred to me that dropping a grenade into the driver's footwell might wake him up.

    For about four seconds anyway...

    Hi

It seems to be increasingly common in the last few years. Walking up our local high street you end up getting a nose full of the stuff.

An alternative to the firmware updates for anyone who is struggling post Windows 10 is to use a USB 2.0 hub.

Plugging the Silhouette directly into the laptop you get the issue where it doesn't work with Windows 10.

However l, I use a USB 2.0 hub, and plug the Silhouette into that. Because the laptop sees the USB 2.0 hub, it detects the device no problem.

    Jo

    Hi

Thats maybe why mine just works on windows 10 as my laptop has USB 2.0 ports as well as the UB 3.0 ones.

Clearly they cannot be universally bad or no-one would buy them & I can except that things do go wrong.

However, there is no excuse for indifferent service.

    Hi

Anything that is mass produced will have bad examples but you can’t just right off a brand because of your bad experience.

Testing every single device would push the cost up. I used to work in a factory were we hand built the items and each was rigorously tested, they cost more than the alternative brands.

Even after all that we still had returns due to failures of components.

Avoid Nextbase - I have 2, my wife & daughter have one each & my next door neighbours 2 - all of them suffer from battery issues & Nextbase Customer "Service" as much use as a chocolate iron.

    Hi

Yet I have had two Nextbase cameras and both have been perfect. Reason for two is I sold my car with the first one in it as I’d had it hardwired in and didn’t want to remove it.

Got some of the 0.22f capacitors to try on my first batch APT. But I'm not at all confident on which leg is positive on these ones. It's not like there is a big + on one leg. There are arrows. The ones on the second batch look to be the same as I have bought. Are they negative to the top, the way the legs are attached?

    Neil.

    Hi

The arrows usually point to the negative connection.

Where's your sense of adventure? 🤣

I think that the message was "Drive carefully or die horribly"...

Of course, car interior design has come a long way. Now we have soft steering wheels and driver airbags, ergonomic, tactile controls, blue tooth and heads up displays to take the eyes off the road etc.

Of course, it possible upgrade a classic to satisfy modern safety concerns, simply buy one these and paint it dull grey.....

I think that is what the car designers did?*

    *Other styles are available.

    Hi

I think you have missed the point of a head up display. You look through it to see the road but can also see what speed you are doing without looking down at your instruments.

Someone will have to clarify me with this as I only very briefly read the post.

There was an post on N Gauge Forum, just recently explaining what's happened. Most items have been sold to the 2mm Society and there was someone else but I can't remember now. Sorry.

    Hi

P&D Marsh have some of the white metal castings.

I believe they are. I struggled to drill the holes in some of the smaller components without mangling them. I tried various drills, with both electric drills and pin chucks but the rods are so slender that the slightest catch or snatch damaged them. Probably just me being clumsy as a 2mm novice. So I have used them as a guide for rod lengths and cut replacements from nickel silver sheet. So even if I am not using them all directly, they have proved very useful.

    Hi

What you need is a set of cutting broaches because as you’ve found drills just tend to catch.

One other thing to bare in mind when stripping paint with >90% IPA is that the IPA doesnt damage glazing.  So if you are stripping something like a Hornby HST powercar which has unique curved glazing that is impossible to source replacements for, soaking the body in IPA will soften the glue meaning the glazing can easily be removed without any damage.  (Sometimes it needs a separate soak in clean IPA to clean off any residual paint that has moved onto it while cleaning up).

    Hi

Thanks for the above information as it has enabled me to get the glazing out of a Farish class 24 completely intact.

    Let me pose a question.

Your employment hours mean that you don't arrive home until late evening. All of the non-dodgy parking spaces are full by that time.

The alternative option is to park three streets away, where there is usually spare capacity.

Please tell us what you would do.

    CJI.

    Hi

The person in question has an adequate drive but because they have multiple vehicles choose to leave one on the corner to save having to swap the cars over.

    https://www.google.com/maps/@53.3595445,0.0994879,3a,75y,341.13h,81.06t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sV8zgAnDDL0zr3s1Rb0nrDA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu

This is the corner and the owner of the cars lives in the house just to the right of the image with the car on the drive. I don't think your theoretical question applies here.

    Cheers
