  1. One ATW route that could benefit enormously from the introduction of 319 Flex units would be the Wreham to Bidston line.  They could enable the services to be extended from Bidston to Liverpool James Street.  After all, very few of the punters want to go to Bidston, they want to go to Liverpool and Birkenhead.  Through running would increase patronage on this route and increasing the train length from two cars to four cars would enable that.  It is my understanding that although diesels are permitted through the Mersey rail tunnel (I've seen Network Rail  MPVs running out of the tunnel through Birkenhead Hamilton Square station), trains carrying fuel are not permitted through the single track tunnels beyond James Street Station.  Even so, changing trains at James Street to get to Liverpool city centre has got to be a more attractive option than changing trains at Bidston.  There is even a dissused turnback platform at James Street that could be recommissioned for the use of these services.

  2. Gutted.  I looking to replace my four kit built models of late production batch Baby Warships (D6334 onwards).  The Dapol ones have much better detail.
Looks like they'll be remaining in service and my £o££€¥ staying in the bank!

  3. If anybody in the North West of England is looking for a grand day out this Sunday, may I recommend the  Lymm Historic Transport Day.
    https://www.lymmtransport.org.uk/
As part of the may attractions there is a small model railway show organised by our friends at the Warrington Model Railway Club.
As part of the show, I shall be showing my "new" layout 'Bodmin Generally' for the very first time.
Exhibition opens at 10:00.  Venue is Lymm Village Hall, Pepper Street, Lymm.  WA13 0JB.

  4. These products have always been advertised as a random selection of vehicles.  Where did anybody get the idea that they would all be the same?  The purpose is to provide loads for randomly loaded car flats.  I would be dissapointed if I bought two packs that had two cars that were the same!
IMHO Oxford are doing the right thing.

  5. Does anybody have a drawing for these vehicles?  I could also use one and I spoke to Andrew of MSE / Comet Coaches at the York show about these.  It seems that Comet produce nearly all the other Hawksworth coaches but not this one.  He said that if I could provide a drawing, he would do the etch for the sides.  :sungum:

  6. Thanks for the update Dave.  I appreciate your tradtional British sense of "fair play".  Speaking personally, if somebody else got theirs before I got mine, I would take it with the same mindset as when somebody else wins the lottery and I don't!  Luck of the draw and all that.  Life's like that, oh dear, how sad, never mind.  But I appreciate your viewpoint and that others might not feel like I do.
So long as they both turn up in the post together, I'll be happy to wait.

  7. With regard to the 00 quadart set, are you going to produce and "all third/second" set, a "composite set", or both?
I've had a thought regarding articulation of these coaches, that would enable a protypically close spacing of the coaches, while still being able to negotiate unprototypically tight curves.  A cam machanism such as that used by Bachmann, Hornby, ROCO et al for close coupling with NEM boxes, could be designed to enable the coaches to share a bogie while alomost touching on straight track, but their outer edges would move appart on curves.  This would enable them to get around tighter curves, without the need for a huge gap between the coaches, at least while on a straight.

  8. As others have said, the Bachmann link does not place the pocket in the position laid down by the NEM standard so the Kadee coupler head, or any other make that is made to fit into one that does, will not be correctly aligned.

The non-bodging solution is the replacement links made by Keen Systems, which are a straight swap for the Bachmann parts but give the correct length and height. If you run your coaches as a fixed rake you only need one at each end.

I fit them with Kadee #19s if using corridor covers, or #18s if not.

Within the set, the most economical course is to keep the Bachmann links but fit Hornby R8220 coupler heads.

    John

John beat me to it!  This is exactly what I was about to post.

One further solution is to attach a #19 or #20 UNDERNEATH the Bachmann NEM box.  I drill a small hole through the coupling and box and fit a small screw to hold it in place.  A drop of canopy glue between the NEM box and the shaft of the coupling stops it pivoting on the screw, but allows removal if need be.

  9. Sorry Jeremy, I was very remiss and failed to take a single photo!  Parrot Hall is now set back up at home ready to restart progress, I hope! In the meantime I finished these two off –

31 158 in original Railfreight, from the Hornby model, and still awaiting a sound decoder.

And 31 229 from a Lima model, with the motor bogie swapped for another trailing one and a TTS decoder. Both may make appearances on PH as well as Coppell.

Also at our show I picked up a few road vehicles –

It’s a start, but a few more to source yet. Kev.

You need a bus to put on that bridge Kev. :mosking:

  10. That's of interest, as I also prefer to use rub-on transfers,  Replica Railways ones were always my go-to, but most of theirs nowadays are waterslide...............

    Me too!

Can we have some old school red on white electrification warning flashes in 4mm scale please?  These are a pain as waterslides.

  11. Hi Alan

That looks excellent.  Can I ask where you sourced the tender? Its very similar to that on the Dean Goods as far as I can tell.  I fancied doing one with that tender.  I also fancied 2268. There are shots of it in filthy condition but with clean cab sides and tender which appeals to me! Meanwhile I'm trying to figure out the best way of removing the cab windows  for 2239 without making it into a major trauma.

I'm also struggling to decide what to do for my next layout. I always wanted to do a terminus at Porth Dinllaen and have copied the plans for the 1880 proposal to extend from Pwllheli (passing Rhyd-y-Clafdy of course). But I struggle to come up with a design. Maybe a terminus would have been built at or near Morfa Nefyn and a siding extended down to the beach and round to the lifeboat station.  But there again a terminus with the few buildings, Whitehall and the Ty Coch Inn appeals! But I cant really imagine there would have been sufficient development along the headland to justify a station there. But then a harbour facility similar to the at Aberdovey could make it into a nice layout.

But then I have some LMS locos  and have a fancy to do something on Anglesey along the lines of Bodorgan etc.

    Choices eh!

The Cambrian did start building a standard guage branch to Beddgelert Phil.  Some of the earthworks are still there.  How about that as a "might have been" Cambrian terminus layout?

  12. Our last show this year is with Dobris at the European Railways Associations show in the H Suite Edgbaston this coming Saturday.

This will be this layouts third show this year. A few new items of rolling stock to give a test run aswell.

Whilst it is jsut about the longest layouts that I have built at 24 feet (although we will be not be using part of the fiddleyard this show)  its also one of the quickest to set up. All fits in one car along with up to four operators. However this trip two of our operators will be coming form Cheshire, one with a brand new part-scratch built steam loco.

Do come along and say hello people.  I shall be there lending a hand.  Ben Racey of this parish will indeed be bringing along his newest Czech kettle. :-)

  13. I had a chat with Phil Sutton at Warley.  He reminded me that SLW have a firm policy of not announcing anything until they actually have them available.  So just because there have been no announcements, in this case, doesn't mean that there isn't a container full of some fabulous new model on its way already.  So nobody should be disheartened by a lack of announcements from SLW. :sungum:
