In my experience, I don’t know any German retailer who follows the system correctly for orders under £135, they either charge the German VAT or deduct it and send the order VAT free

Its very much the same when ordering from the UK!    Only Hatton;s seem to have it set up and are registered for VAT in Ireland and a few other EU countreis.  They give you a few shipping options for under £135/€150 or if over €150 use DHL.

I think Gaugemaster deduct VAT,  not sure of any others.

  2. Hatton's now offer additional shipping options with Evri/Fastway and DPD which are both cheaper than DHL.  I have today received a parcel via DPD today, collected Monday afternoon with out any hassle.

Good to have more options and avoid the Royalmail/Anpost lottery.

    Sample prices from Hatton's website.

    Republic of Ireland
£3.50 Royal Mail. Zone 05. Airmail Untracked. Weighs between 001g and 300g when packed. Ave 3-5 day transit time.
£5 EVRI International via Fastway. Ireland. Weighs between 001g and 300g when packed. Ave 2-4 day transit time.
£8.96 Royal Mail. Western Europe. Airmail "Signed for". Weighs between 001g and 300g when packed. Avg 3-5 day transit time.
£9 DPD Republic of Ireland. 2-day with tracking up to 10kg
£23 DHL Express Priority. Insured, tracked & signed-for. Delivered 1 working day after despatch. Zone 1 - up to 1kg

Out of interest, could I just ask if this means the "Remove item" option has reappeared? (My trunk is currently empty as I've had my items shipped).  The website dates for stocktaking suggest a different timetable - has Hattons confirmed that was the reason?  Just curious in case it happens again.  On the subject of bargains, my latest purchase would fit that criterion: an HO InterMountain 60' boxcar that seems to be in mint condition (based on opening the box when it arrived).  Paid far less than I have for other eqiivalent products recently.  Very happy, Keith.

This is a quote from an email I had from Hatton's yesterday. Hope this helps.

"With Christmas fast approaching, we are due to perform a warehouse stocktake imminently. This means that we will need to dispatch all Trunks by Wednesday 22nd November. We will automatically dispatch them from Tuesday 14th November if you do not dispatch it yourself. Thank you for your patience and understanding regarding this."

Why coffins?  I'm thinking that the closest thing to coffins are Pendolinos but obviously i don't know very much about that era (despite being there)...

Back in the day, thats what we 'Bashers'  called the MK2 D-F air-con coaches, espesially if the air-con was not working.  MK1's or MK2 A-C coaches being preffered with the windows fully open so you can hear the loco(s) working.

Could this mean that it will be cheaper to buy TT models from the retailers rather than Hornby?

For me yes,  now that there is no discount, it will be cheaper for me to purchace Hornby TT:120 items from Modellbahn Union or MSL lippe rather than direct from Hornby in future.

On the subject of pre-owned items, I've been looking at some of the second-hand rolling stock there that interests me, but I'm uncertain where to ask about it here- it's old Lima Models stock, you see.

Cant realy go wrong with the Lima models.  Yes, they are not as detailed as todays models but then again they dont have fragile bits that fall off them as soon as you look at it. You can add extra details as you wish, thats called modelling  :)  .  Lima motors are easily stripped down and cleaned, as an example,  I have a Lima 33 which I completly stripped down and cleaned the gears and motor, reassemble and lubricated with Hobe-lube, added extra pick-ups to all wheels including the ones with traction tyres on and it runs a lot smoother then my Heljan one.

If it’s downloadable can’t you just resize it (or print at a larger size) anyway?

The download link in the TT club magazine, if you just print it out is for the 00 version, on the PDF pages it says to print at 63% for the TT version.

Hattons have the relatively newly tooled XC sliding door mk3s for as low as £16 a coach, which at less than half  price seems like a bargain until you realise there are no XC power cars available to run them.

My (bargain-bin) full rake has remained boxed up for nearly 2 years now, hoping Hornby announce some XC power cars.  I'm not sure if this is yet another example of Hornby incompetence, or a genius move as those who bought the bargain coaches are now desperately needing the matching powercars. Just need Hornby (or Accurascale!) to announce the matching XC 43s.

No problem, just run them with GWR power cars.  Thats what I do to justify my short rake.

  10. My 08 arrived today, Just tested on length of track, nice smooth runner straight out the box.

Only issue is there is no instruction/service sheet.  Should one be supplied with the TT :120 models or do you download on line?  I shall send Hornby an email and see what they say.

Anyway, happy with the 08 so far.

  12. Latest update on my recent Hattons order, this is an email that I have had from them today. It seems that the IOSS system had changed!! This is the first parcel that they had already resent, the other is still floating around in the system somewhere!!

    "Dear John,

I'm e-mailing in regards to order reference XXXXXXX, where I'm sorry to inform you that your parcel has been returned due to an issue with our IOSS number.

Unfortunately, we are currently in the small interim period where the old IOSS service has ended and we're awaiting the new IOSS service to take over, where this is required for orders sent with DPD and Royal Mail.

We do apologise for the delay in you receiving your items and for any inconvenience you may have been caused. We are working hard to get this resolved as soon as possible, and as soon as I have a further update, I send you a separate e-mail to keep you informed."

  13. An Post are a joke now! They have stopped for a second time my parcel from Hatton's which they resent having previously been returned as 'supposedly' it did not have the correct customs info. Ordered 20th Feb, Anpost sent back to Hattons, they resent on 8th March and now going to be sent back again! Waste of time trying to contact An Post customer service as they just fob you off with feeble excuses!

  14. Having now had two parcels now on thier way back to Hatton's , Yesterday I phoned Hattons telling them about this problem,  and they said for some reason they are currently having problems with shipments to Ireland.   It seems to be when using Royalmail - Anpost,  not aware of any issues with DHL, which is the only other shipping option, but expensive at £23.00!!!

Anyway, once Hattons recive the items back I should get an email from them giving me options of refunding or resending the item,  so watch this space and see what happens.

Elriwa (shop in Germany) just announced in the newsletter I got from them that they'll be stocking Hornby TT in their shop after concluding a deal with Hornby. They're doing a preorder special now on everything, e.g. asking €155 for Flying Scotsman, that's £137.

This should simplify things for buyers within the EU.

    Is this genuine?,

Reason I ask is that I have not seen anything on the Hornby website or anything in the TT:120 members area of the site.

Will be a big bonus if we can buy direct from the EU.

  16. For anyone in Ireland,  looks like Anpost are back to thier antics once again!   Got an order from Hattons posted on 20th February, say they were unable to deliver, but they have never tried or contacted me about it , it has not left Dublin and looks -like its now on its way back to Hatton's!

I've had the same with the coaches rubbing on the curves, both R2 (310mm) and R3 (£56m as provided in the set). The coach chassis has cut-out on the inside of the chassis where the wheels would rub that make that part of the sol bar a thin as possible. I'm not actually sure it is the wheel flanges; I think it might actually be the wheel face...

When I took them to my local model shop for them to have a look at the proprietor commented that the coaches seemed very light. So this evening I dissected one...

Do you see the metal weight in the space between the chassis and the interior? No I don't either... Time to dig out the lead sheet or liquid lead or something.

Would it be worth contacting Hornby and asking if there should be any weights inside the MK1's?
