Really neat Tom. I've used Kleer for years as a varnish with Tamiya matt medium to get the right level of 'dullness'. I've used it to fix sand loads in N gauge wagons but not for ballast.......here goes!

I've had success in fading colours by using a white undercoat then applying the full density top coat. Then gently rub down with very fine wet and dry used with plenty of water. Unfortunately this only works if you can, or want to repaint.
