  1. Rather surprised to see that there are so few parking spaces as I recall in the 60s it was difficult enough to park anyway. Cycling through as I did for work when based at Sutton rather than St Helier Hospital the hills were quite a drag, especia;ly on a fixed wheel of 78".
  2. And therefore 'leaking' ... the half-life of tbis is tremendous, we used a simlar but probably smaller sized source one for checking our isotope counters.
  3. Why is it that businesses seek higher profits when things 'go wrong'. Seems that quote (ITPro) "As recession bites, more firms are expected to engage in cuts of this kind.from big tech layoffs, including unsustainable business models and a drive for greater profit at the expense of employee security". These things come in waves, although currently the 'wave' is both more severe and longer, but when things get better they cannot get the staff - who those who complain most - the 'big cats' at the top rather than the small guys at the base who need the monies to survive.
  4. I too remember this sort of thing. The one that goes through mind is where reagents were needed over and above the 'normal' because of sudden inexplicable increased demand near the end of the financial year. Can't quite remember the full details but we were required to agree to pay the £10 000 'if it all went wrong type of thing'. The company had been forwarned of our potential need and sent the reagents anyway. We were sure so signed but, the alternative without the reagents was that equipment would have to have been shut down. Ultimately it was proven that finance had 'delayed' the official order so that it would come out of the following years budget. That is the main trouble with money - those in overall control of it think of their interests and, in this case 's*d the patients' needs.
  5. We waited 4 hours and one of the others who also had a pothole 'problem' waited 16 hours and because they do not count it as 'mecahnical' it cost extra!
  6. How the problem. We have a beroom that is where clothes are stored for ironing so not a room used daily. On this particlar morning a day or two since anyone went into the room I needed a shirt so opened the door to see water running down through the ceiling. Stop tap turned off and plumber called - expensive but thankfully very quick service. While he was there he discovered that the overflow pipe from the tank had at some stage been partially disconnected while presumeably some work was taking place and had not been replaced (we have only recently moved here). While he was with us the ceiling came down - thankfully he cleared that as well. The cause as above was the ballcock not doing its job. For us the thought was if I had not needed the shirt just how long would the water have been flowing before we noticed ... e.g. if we had been out shopping at the time the ceiling came down we wuld not have known. Thankfully the insureance company sorted out the trademan to repair the damage very efficiently. @peterthemole - thoughts with you
  7. @polybear -some skilled workngs @Tony S - well done Matthew Sorry folks - just had news that my best friend at school and since had a massive MI and died last night. RIP
  8. We had to confirm that at Gresley some years ago.
  9. @PupCam and @monkeysarefun I have looked up at stars but only ever on one occasion - over 30 years ago on a very clear night sky - have I ever recognised any of these constellations. Hayleys Comet was seen for a few nights but ... its all a mystery for me. @Physicsman. has some fantastic shots but for me his moon pictures are really fascinating.
  10. You have provided another reminder of days gone by - early 60s this time. At the time and as a relative 'junior' a consultant was missing on a day or two and I was brought his tea at the bench by the domestic . Again this was before Aberfan and the resultant and eventually the H&S at Work Regulations. Post the morning tea and before the H&S an orange booklet on laboratory regulations (H&S in labs) was published and distributed and in my hospital everyone was given a copy (cannot find mine at present but still have it). In those days we also had after work pathology laboratory meetings - attendance was voluntary but numbers were usully very good - that included discusion and method procedural changes that were necessary.
  11. Just a comment - it may or may not come as a surprise but there was a time, and probably still is, when most of the nurses 'on nights' had children. The husband/partner looked after the children at night and the mothers had the children during the day as well as trying to sleep. Problem time came when 'the nursing establishment' wanted them to come in when the husband/partner was also on nights and were very unhappy to be refused. There were a couple of nights that I could relate to but for the time being will not do so but, it was/is still a concern.
  12. The bins already have wheels - obviously an envionmental improvement ... not. Also a trip hazard and potential shorting in the cold ... think I will just continue to use the keep fit personal movement approach.
  13. I see that the Florida guy doesn't believe that Covid 'exists'.
  14. Close eyes = fotrbidden! Re: Unmade up kits. Recently discovered this one - probably had it 40 years or so. If the mood takes might just do it but there again ...
  15. Totally agree about this and have never replaced with nails in any home. Use screws in everything rather than nails - son says sometimes spoils the look but it's always strong.
  16. No comment suitable.. apps do not always work, cash is in short supply and as for parking apps ... also think it diabolical that the railways want to close all booking offices in favour of things that do not always work and especially for those of us who do not do 'smart'. Sounded like a rant.
  17. Wow, remember it being on the Pathe news in cinemas at the time!
  18. When I had space in an office where people had smoked the head suggested after I complained about smoking that a vote would be taken to allow or not to allow smoking. From my background and e.g. one of the reasons I never went into a pub even for the social unfortunately normally important post meeting meetings was because I was/am intolerant of smoking, was to tell him in no uncertain terms that there was no point in taking a vote as it had to be banned. There were moans but not very long after some, who had not normally taken breaks, did so and most eventually gave up smoking.
  19. Couldn't comment on this as none appropriate - absolutely hate the cold, snow and particularly ice.
  20. Even years ago it was amusing (but not) to think 'that doesn't seem like her/his style' look up and, lo and behold, there was the paragraph verbatum.
  21. A son has an air fryer and for 'two' says it is sufficient and has already saved on electricity. It was also used as an extra at Christmas. Great to see a labelled photograph of the 'Brains Trust'.
  22. A number of comments on food and as you know that is something not normally commented about but ... agree with this although no thanks to a sun lamp! As previously stated had tried to eat 'other' food but basically was sick as a .... afterwards so 'exotic' trips abroad are a definite 'no no', however, found that I could take French Fries ... otherwise a few days away has been a great way to loose weight! On an aside was once overjoyed to see a More Reasons in Gibraltar that made SWMBOs holiday much more enjoyable as her tastes are wide and therefore did not have to worry about me.
  23. Ditto and our the set book was Great Exceptions.
  24. Hadn'r realised that it has been 5 years already!
