  1. Working opposite Friary Meux Brewery in Guildford, YHA Hostelling in 'hop areas' in Kent and the Burton breweries found the smell literally sick making so totally agree.
  2. Only too true - if you were 'in the hills' of Winshill or Stapenhill the breeze brought it to you and yuh yuh!
  3. Skimmed through tonight - left some 'ticks' but didn't check that they had 'worked'. There was a maggot farm on TV this evening - the farming one - claining to be environmentally neutral but no mention was made of the smell. Large model boats on OO scale dwarf locos but are very impressive - seem to remeber a modeller with a harbour of large militry vessels at a Great Central Railway exhibition a few years back. The smell that came back to me was Palmers? of Cambridge Heath/Hackney in the 60s - you could always tell what they were producing and allergy signs and symptoms - not good.
  4. Ditto grandfathers and yes it is strange that we remember how old our parents 'would be now' on their birthdays when we only considered their 'happy birthday' when alive. My parents in their 30s on my actual birthday and me 70 before our first grandchild.
  5. Been missing for a couple of days. Started reading all but the number of pages kept getting longer so did two things 1 - if the cmment did't work first time go to the next and then quite a lot of skipping to now. Kelly's sleep was the one that struck. chord (literally). ONe of my age frequently gets up in the night and if going back to sleep is difficult get up and wander onto computer or empty dishwasher; back in bed and maybe up to two hours non sleep but on waking find that it has gone 0800 hours plus so,it seems, the required hours of sleep are obtained. This happened ... we had had some work done (well). This room, thankfully no bed in it had not been entered for a couple of days, looked in to get an ironed shirt anf ounf water splashing onto the floor. Turned off the stoptap, called an emergency plumber and located the 'source' of the 'drip'. Turned out that the central heating tank ball-valve had failed , the excess water ran down the overflow but it ended in the middle of the loft area. While the plumber was present a thump was heard as the ceiling came down (fortunately mosttiems had been moved to a safer place). The conclusion, a previous owner had hd soffitreplaced, had found this dry pipe, removed it and did not replace - evidenced by remains on the join that it had been complete at one time in its life. Insurane stated that they will cover damage but not the plumbers call-out and of course being water elated there is a hefty excess. Off course all this happened on the bank holday weekend ... Others happy birthday Dave; sorry to hear that Chris f has another fine of some sort to pay; IKEA and boats - some great sailing ship modelling and many motor bikes. Hope the Baz news inproves , Kelly's back soon mends and the ID/Poly discourse goes anotheer round or two but in this less 'agressive'. I have now heard of Ninja and Air-cookers and gained information but, thankfully, although capable of cooking Sunday droasts while still in primary school but SWMBO is fantastic at the 'double meal' as you well know my complete lack of appreciation for 'modified' foods does create some 'problems'. Fortunately I am able to tolerate the same thing on a number of consecutive days. The turntable took a long time but it definitely looks worth it. Hopefully have covered the main points. Thanks for reading this far.
  6. New word on me 'oporcong'.
  7. Until you added the onion in the gravy and the coffee I was totally in agreement. You may have noticed no comments on the 'foody' blogs above because of course none of the available emojies were/are applicable.
  8. On telephones, a bit of useless information, we were the first with out surname in the London Telephone Directories as dad these days, for most of his working life, might well be considered as a Sole Trader. He was willing to help old lags by training them to repair time recorders and there were one ot two interesting tales to come from that e.g a company from sme distance contacted him to ask if the man who had called-in on speck to repair his time clock should be paid. Dad's reply was 'Did he do a good job?" The reply was "Yes, its working properly".to which dad said "That's fine then you can pay him". He did of course work out who might have called-in and confirmed it some time later - one of the lags had run short of cash. Dad was willing to travel anywhere and on one occasion went to a Celtic vs Rangers (obviously as a neutral) match and as was his 'went' he shouted out "Foul" when he saw an obvious one. The next moment his hat was pushed down over his face with a comment "Ain't new foo"- cannot do the Scottish accent or exact words but that is basically what was said.
  9. The Peugeot saga. You may remember the little 'thing' about an LED not functional in the column indicating that the L hand indicaor was working. The indicator itself does work and fortunately has an audible sound as well. This comes up as a minor fault on the MOT. To replace Peugeot require £1203.31 to replace the unit as they 'don't do' repairs. After getting on to them thhey came up with £180 that while not happy I would have paid for the reassurance that it gives. BUT when they finally came back they still demanded £1203.31 to replace it - nmo way will I pay that for such a simple item - what does a complete replacement unit do for the environment?
  10. Happy Birthday Brian and many more of them.
  11. Have a word with Andy Y about how to pay £12 rather than have to have a new name - viz there must be some way to allow a change of email and then perhaps possible to logon and get the £12 option.
  12. Hit it right on the nail - absolutely revolting even pre-primary nursery times - was the last to finish ... after a time waiting for me to finish it they (called nurses then) went out ... when they came back I had finished ... had actually thrown it out through a broken window pain ... obviously at that age no finesse and they realised but there was no way that they could make me eat it.
  13. On holiday or visiting you can become 'temporary' and see a local GP. The 'Kelly experiience' - that I hope does not last too much longer - is related to money (effectively not following) . Areas have 'limited budgets' so any 'out of the area person' is moved as quickly as feasible to their own area to save money. or unwilling to fund outside their actual area. 'Mistakes' potentially happen of the 'delay' type in terms of notes, but I must congratulate his Leicestershire GPs as they sent with him a copy of their 'feedback' from the hospitals and recoomnded that he be 'temporary registered' with a local GP. On receipt of the formal request, accompanied by the copy report, the local surgery replied positively just about immediately. Our recent experience with a relative as previously mentioned started in Derbyshire then Nottinghamshire, back to Derbyshire as soon as possible and then the Derbyshire wanted to send him to Warwickshire (his address code) but home is in Leicestershire. Fortunately 'big sis' twigged what was intended, told them she would take and brought him to WIltshire to aid recovery.
  14. On a course in London some good few years back the company informed that we would be eating at 'the Thai' restaurant - can't remember where exactly it was - but from my musings here you will know that I 'eat to live' and a true 'meat and 2/3 veg' man. Many of the course companions (most of whom I knew) stated that they liked hot spicy food. I immediately went out and bought some biscuits as I did not want to go hungry later. Wow - they provided plain rice so I did eat something but had a fantastic evening watching and listening to those who 'liked' and dived into 'neat' etc. Their reactions to something somewhat hotter and spicier than they were used to just made my day. PS I did finish the bicuits later.
  15. Nice flugal horn tone but photgraph looks more like a trumpet. Our trip to the Lizard some years ago was marred by an error (putting it politely) jobsworth parking attendant as we left and we had to eventually threaten proceedings before it was sorted.
  16. Hope you a great birthday Dave - the area of your abode sounds like a great place to live.
  17. Please send the rain East
  18. Belated happy anniversary to Ian and Mrs Abel.
  19. Ditto and to be honest, in spite of the result and the overwhelming 'happiness' some of the antics went a bit far ... remember they are the 'trailblazers' for the up-and-coming (hopefully) many many more women association football players. Yes, I came in after being informed that England had won. I also have never seen a defeated team so 'down' as the German ladies were at the end ... just shows their extreme passion and disappointment for not winning the game. A friend of mine went on a German website and found a report that suggestsed 'we was robbed again like 1966'. - no further comment necessary. As an aside I saw the 1966 final on a colour television and, like GDB above, also did not watch the 1988 Cup Final so as not to jinx Wimbledon ... it worked!
  20. IF you live where I have been for a while it is a dead area forreeption viz mo mobile nor internet connection ... and much delay was caused by non receipt ofemails in spite of informing them that a land line call was the only contact. I am one of those who hates everything being 'digital' - especially on mobile telphones where trying to read a documnet an d then need a page a few back is so much worse than the printed article. - Sounds like a rant. PS hence why infrequent access to ERs etc. I too find it best to set the days tablets in a container as it makes sure that they are not forgotten and of curse gives a breathing space for collecting repeats. Apologies for having to skip so many pages but hopefully nothing too serious has happened ,, fires and Lionesses apart.
  21. Surprised to see that 8 million Covid case is more than London and Glasgow populations put together but you are the 'stats man'.
  22. In the 50s there were plans for countrywide nuclear power plants ... but lost its way so now we pay e.g. France for supplying nuclear power. . personally I hate all these 'windmills' all over the place taking up farming arreas so we have to buy more from abroad. Rant over.
