  1. The marking ... a new full-time teaching appoint and was informed that I would be given a week to 'settle in' but less than 20 minutes after "XYZ is ill, will be off for some time and has this back-log of marking"! The 'silver lining' if ever there is from marking was that when also asked to cover and had the register a good idea of individual capabilities was already known. The snag - not my chosen subject but fortunately, if dealing with terminally ill and dementia relatives is fortunate, I had considerable experience.
  2. @Erichill16I seem to remember the spaghetti tree was an April fool joke on the BBC in the early 70s. Happy belated anniversary to Brian and Mrs Brian. The many food stuff just go over my head and for Gwiwer - there was no bar during my time at Kingston.
  3. Many many years ago on a scout camp our troop were very unhappy that another troop had baked beans on toast on the afternoon of arrival whereas ours just had a 'normal' tea. Supper was the same for the troop and breakfast and dinner the next day ... by then our own Scout leader decided enough was enough so he demanded to see the provisions of that other troop. 7lb tins of baked beans and bread! That was it so the troop were invited to join ours and we cooked and fed them the rest of the week, obviously much busier than planned but, as one of the 'cooks' - yes I was one of the cooks - it was enjoyable and friends were made. The latest I've heard of our 50s Scout Master was living in Australia and was well into his 90s.
  4. ... and I was named after the pilot who fired it.
  5. Leaves are easy to deal with, its those B' awlful seeds that are the bigger problem ... the diameter of out tree is over 2'. The lawn-mower set above the minimum picks up the leaves but the seeds get everywhere.
  6. Crocodile Clips rang a bell ... used in teaching days as also fun. Airlines - too long ago to remember the 'big' ones but have experience as a passenger in 6-seaters with a full view forward - quite something although noisy - and of course no service staff. Son once had a trip in the 'spare' seat with the pilot - a thoroughly enjoyable experience and he spoke about it for weeks. Also remenber flight to and from Guernsey watching the pilots and of course even earlier a Dakota to Jersey. Gutter cleaning this am ... surprising what a fortnights heavy rain and wind can do ... I would rather have 'leafed it' alone as it required top of ladder usage..
  7. Interesting, having worked my way through the enormous number of pages that seem to mysteriously appear if a day is missed I find that as well as odd 'foods' - you may remember that I 'eat generally'to live rather than live to eat'. I have heard of childrens series of which names are known but the details ... the last one really remembered is Muffing the Mule on a firends television. We too did not have a television until mid teen years and worj kept me occupied mosyt of the time when the children would be watching television so cnnot really comment on them as just odd specific nits of episodes are remembered - we named a kitten 'Florence' and the eldest's first proper word was a clear "Florence" but only the one time, hence why it is still remembered nearly 50 years on. Anothe roddity that came up to day - why do the TV channels tell people to 'turn awy' if they do not know the result of a football match as to my mind any football supported will already have had access to and know the result. Conversely from what I hear 'David what's his name' was announced as appearing in Dr Who before it was screened as replacing the said 'lady' for the next 8/9 months. Just tell me what is the diffrence between that and telling football supporters to 'turn away'?
  8. Not a physician so our remit had to be arm with needles. With lancets the fingers to definitely avoid as you know either from experience or 'common sense' were/are index fingers. As a needle phobe adding this response to the blog has has surprising effects.
  9. Horrible Hstories, H Poisons etc books do teach good basic information in an 'interesting' way and hopefully will be remembered. Reading ... hospitalised at early school time reading came later with specific 121 with the then teacher (Elspeth Fry) on return to school. She really set me up in catching up with the rest of the class ... It was also a little later that the library was 'only round the corner' and newspapers were read daily on the way home from school. Then it was moved and required a 20 plus minute walk each way so was not visited anywhere near as often until blked and later 'car'ed'' could be a 'yous' type word if everybody used it. You all lknow my pet hates of this e.g. 'think' now accepted instead of 'thing' and earlier different 'to' instead of diffierent 'from' biut as someone earlier also mentioned we woulfd probnably still be runting ... .
  10. Yes in a. nutshell. ID beat me to it and gave the 'full answer'.
  11. Booked the flu jab as like others they did not do the two together. Anyway had the Covid 5th a while back ... had a fixed appointment for the flu jab at one of the surgeries in town; booked in saw a rather long queue; thought SWMBO will have a long wait (parking in Salisbury is an expensive nightmare) but suddenly the receptionist said quite loudly 'Flu jab only ... take a seat over there" . Within a minute I was called into a different room ; had said jab and was out in no time. A few weeks ago when asked why the two could not be given together I was informed that the surgery had not yet had its allocation. The other surprise was a two day arm ache but heh ho 'tis done. SWMBO still trying to get a date for the flu jab but ended up getting her Covid the day before me!
  12. Really good. Looks like a busy surburban area in terms of the bridge.
  13. The idiots will probably payup for him ... but it was nice to know that he 'acknowkedged' that the event took place bearing in mind the trolling that the parents have had. PS Hope to be in Poole (Bournmouth Show) attached to Bodmin -on Sunday
  14. Wiltshire 30% up on the country 'average'.
  15. Congratulations - as others have said you will wonder how you ever found the time to go to work. If they haven't replaced yu by someone who knows what they are doing ... how will the electronics companies fare.
  16. The tests are pretty reliable and the 'error' rate is much much much less than your 'testing several times' so you were definitely not Covid infected at the time.
  17. All that food in just a 'copla a daze' - looks like that air-fryer is making you cook more!. Are they paying you as a demonstrator or remembering your past life as a salesman?
  18. Have you plotted it for your students to extrapolate the time when you will be completely free of it and the variables that might prolong the course?
  19. Missed indicating presence but had a great day at Farnham - many excellent layouts a good sprinkle of traders and SSWMRS Bodmin generally ran well.
  20. Just moved a removal box labelled 'folders' but inside was - the missing record player - coincidence or not?
  21. The site interesting but: Pedantic probably but I was always of the opinion that you compared something WITH something not to something. This is the same as different FROM rather than different to and the latest (from lazy people?) think instead of THING. These things really grate (another word with many meanings) with me.
  22. Wow, happily started to go through and then Andrew C - the mood changed especially as he was too young (viz not yet retirement age) - so thoughts with his wife and family. Like many others only knew him via RM and always looked forward to the comments from 'The boring borough' as they were so succinct. As Gwiver stated 'none of us know our time' ...
