  1. The 'Earl' plates (or perhaps only some of them?) were not concentric with the driving splashers of a 'Castle' as they were, of course, originally made to fit on the 4-4-0s.

I'm not sure if this applied to all the plates but in broadside photos some of the lower numbered 'Earl' series of 'Castles' clearly have plates that are not concentric.

I suppose the $64,000 dollar question in relation to 5053 is whether or not it had concentric namplates? Some of the later numbered ones with long names definitely do not look to be concentric in photos but the only broadside pic I can find of 5053 is not really close enough or clear enough to give a definite answer.

I have a photo Mike of 5053 at Old Oak in 1953.I think you are right you know.I never knew that.

  2. Hopefully it's just a manipulated image with altered name & number and that things will be right on the production version. While I yet again repeat my concern about getting individual loco details correct I'm inclined to reserve full judgement at least until my two 70XX series locos are in my hands.

Another point tho' - and not really clear from the Hatton's pics - but is the curvature of the nameplate on 5043 correct because in some views it looks as if it matches the splasher beading?

Mind you it says something about the rest of the loco if we are down to talking about minutiae like this ;) .

Did you know thats the only Castle to share its name with a volcano and a 0-6-2T !

  3. Picked mine up from Arcadia models in Shaw - she's a beauty!

It's the Pete Waterman model of 5053 "Earl Cairns" but now shes all wrapped up for Santa!

    Cheers all,

    John E.

John.Any chance of some photos and a review over/after the Christmas period for those of us waiting for the GW version plase.

If Messrs Bachmann or Hornby were to produce one to today's state-of-art, with some matching Edwardian-era coaches, I would succumb to temptation yet again.

    Also;

When Nottingham Forest won the European Cup, they had won the League the season before. It didn't happen out of nowhere. Clough built a wonderful team - and, shock horror, he spent money (first Million pound footballer in Trevor Francis) to do it.

Absolutely ! They had a genius for a manager. That feat wouldn't be possible in todays football climate.Taking a second division team to European champions when if you lost you were out.

  6. Just an update....the NRM requested that the loco be returned to their returns warehouse in Warwick (using the 2nd Class Pre-Paid postage label)and then reorder a new loco once the refund was approved. They could not do a direct swap for the defective loco.

Posted the loco back to the NRM on Wednesday 16/12/2009 at 14.56 and received a refund notification from NRM at today Friday 18/12/2009 at 16.36, the returned loco having been received at 16.15. Phoned the NRM at 16.48 and ordered a replacement loco. The NRM order/refund numbers are as follows:

    Original Order Number: R-00000091

    Refund Number: RR-00000003

    Replacement Order Number: R-00000849

So, if the above numbers are a numerical record of sales then presume they've had 3 returns for 848 models sold so far.

What impresses me, though, is that Royal Mail delivered the return package in 2 days and the NRM processed the refund in 21 minutes. :)

Thats an excellent service all round Keith. You might get your new one Tuesday.

  7. Can I just say, I don't think Ryan Giggs should have won sports personality of the year.

He should get the lifetime acheivement award - in a few years time when he retires.

He's not performed well enough in the last year that he should have been in the running for the BBC award. I have always thought, because its "Sports Personality of the Year" that it was done on a year on year basis (not on the basis of 20 years hard work). If its sports personality of the year, who in British football stands out? I'm not sure anyone does...

Quite agree but I think circumstances dictated last nights winner.Less people were watching due to Mr Cowells final on ITV and maybe all United/Wales fans voted for Giggs to give him the advantage.I think Button should have got it just for the Brawn fairytale.

  8. Fergie's moaning about time added on now.It should be taken out of the refs control.Perhaps there needs to be a new rule that states that play continues till United score or given a penalty at the Stretford end which ever comes first. :D ;)

  9. As secrets go it wasn't that well kept. Several people mentioned CoT as the next NRM model a good year or more ago.

    Cheers

    Jim

I think so Jim.There was no official announcemment on them doing it.So whats next ? Lode Star ;)

  10. It was around the time I went 'full time' painting in 1972 that Alan "Bracks?? sent me a dry sample of brownish red paint telling me this was the colour the Truro frames should be, and not the bright red oxide they then carried. It was quite a culture shock!

I seem to have missed the price. What price is the Bachmann?

  11. Looks suspiciously like Didcot Railway Centre. (quote)

Looks even more like Swindon! The year we got it to the GWR Convention weekend at STEAM. (Note the road barrier in the background)

Livery of the NRM model seems a bit nondescript to me. I suppose its meant to be the current livery - but surely it doesn't have a buffer beam number and 'No.' on it now? (Unless it was last painted at Doncaster, perhaps!)

In 1957 livery the sandboxes were, indeed, painted Indian Red - except that it wasn't Indian Red, just the best they could do. I did hear that it was a mixture of wagon bauxite and buffer beam red! I liked it like that.

    You're spot on Chris. :icon_thumbsup2:

  12. Big game on Saturday, could be the 'biggest' game of the season so far. What am I talking about, the game being played at the City Ground kicking off at 1:00pm, 4th vs 3rd, of course I'm talking about Nottingham Forest vs Leicester City, 2 of the clubs with the meanest defences in the Championship so far. Also 2 of the Clubs no-one suggested would be any where near the Play-off positions at this point in the season, I for one did not expect Leicester to be 3rd in the League, I was expecting mid-table obscurity for us this season, and a push for Play-offs/promotion next season, but we could be getting there this season.

Heart says "Go for it NP, get us to the promised land!!!" Head says "Don't be ridiculous, if we go up this season, we'll be straight back down, even with Milans Millions!!!" Personally, I want to get through to the play-off final and lose!!! Yes!!! Lose..... This would give us more money, and make the players more determined to go the whole hog next season and avoid the disappointment.

Anyway, need to sort out my lucky boxer shorts, get my Rabbits foot, cross all my fingers and toes and hope a black cat doesn't cross my path between now and tomorrow afternoon. ;) ;) ;)

    Regards

    Neal.

So much for having the meanest defence Neal. ;) :D

  13. Well yes, you are absolutely right - the only trouble being that I didn't plan for this to appear at about the same time as the Bachmann BR Std 3 tank or, as now looks to be the case, just ahead of the Hornby 'Castle' and the Heljan D95XX

So it's just as well that the Dapol D63XX seems to have suffered a delay somewhere along the line and that D601 is getting even further away. However I can guarantee that at least the appearance of all these Western locos will stop me occasionally buying variants of the Hornby A3 'on sentimental grounds', and the while I like the rest of it that 'twin snout' on the Class 70 definitely puts me off having one of those despite that fact that I'm otherwise rather taken by it - how's that for self control?

Yes they're like buses at the moment. ;)
