  1. That reminds me, sometimes four year olds have a wonderful way of expressing themselves. After a busy day culminating in a long car journey, I opened the car door for my daughter when we arrived home. She took one look at me and in a quiet tired voice said "legs batteries flat!" Which probably summed it up better than saying it any other way!
  2. I may be wrong but I have a feeling that if it's evidence is to be used in a court of law then it needs gps too.
  3. There is not supposed to be any weight in them. Adding weight hampers the tilting mechanism. Hornby made the bogie frames from metal to help with adhesion, but it was a bit of a compromise, and they can be a little light on their feet. Changing the traction tyres may help.
  4. That will keep Patricia busy...
  5. But the roof may need to curve down more at the edges otherwise it might get a bit close to the underside of bridges since the vertical movement at each side would be greater to get the same amount of tilt. I think I may be overthinking this... time for bed!

I don't think that is quite fair, unless it is sold by auction then it is not available to anyone. There have been a significant number of times I was unable to buy a car, despite calling the day the advert was placed only to be told "sorry mate, sold already" Those cars were definitely unavailable to me despite my best efforts, and could have been bought by a banger racer with less money than I was prepared to pay.
  7. If I am on grass I find I am too high to mow or drive anything...
  8. I have also worked for Peter Dearman and he also has my utmost respect. I doubt if there is anyone who knows OLE better than he does.
  9. That is not the final position, It has probably got temporary droppers or possibly blue rope either side of the support. When the correct droppers are fitted it will all drop in to place.
  10. After my parents had one I felt they were massively under rated. It was the most reliable car they ever had, including up to the current Toyota Yaris. Only time it failed to start was when my Mum had left the lights on and drained the battery. They were the second owners and ran it for nine years. No sign of poor build quality and it was the first larger family car to combine all the features that nowadays most larger cars have. It was the first production car to have a five speed gearbox as standard across the entire range from the outset, and of course it had the front wheel drive/transverse engine layout as well as the previously mentioned hatchback. It's only fault was that it eventually succumbed to rust. Even now I still find it hard to believe that a BL product was the most reliable car they had!
  11. Yes, but mine actually is! Here it is parked (materialised?) on the drive:
  12. Already been done: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOyKHXJxTyQ&feature=youtu.be I think these are also the motors used in T-gauge, my T-gauge HST runs remarkably well with them.
  13. This is why I prefer the French arrangement of traffic lights. There are no traffic lights beyond the stop line, so therefore no red lights on the other side of the junction to confuse people. A miniature repeater traffic light is provided at car driver eye level so that those waiting at the stop line can still see the aspect.
  14. I am also rather intrigued as to what the rest of the blue sign says..
  15. Alistair, this is the perfect example: I have been in this exact situation several times. I would have sounded my horn @ 33 seconds in this video (16:31:54), as well as slowing more on the approach to the corner. At this point the other car is out of sight, yet well under 50m away, easily able to hear a horn even in an insulated mercedes. It might seem that this is a little close, but since this collision occurs in under one second of the mercedes becoming visible, that extra two seconds or so triples the warning time that the other car gets, which makes the difference between coming to a stop facing each other and a collision. On every occasion the other car has heard the horn and is already slowing down before we see each other. We may have come to a halt on occasion just a few inches apart, but as yet no collision has occurred. Maybe this is why I don't have to make claims against other people...
  16. And here's the thing, I do about 20,000 miles a year, and I have not had to make claims against others either. Why? Because I avoid accidents that are not my fault. I know that there are several I would have been in had I had an attitude of 'just taking care of my end'. it does not matter how successful your claims are or how good your camera is they can't replace a pair of amputated legs, which might be what happens next time you 'just take care of your end'...
  17. Absolutely, I really wanted to click the smiley face since it really did give me a big smile, but as unfortunately the smiley means 'funny' the heart will have to do!!
  18. I am well aware of closing speeds/combined distances etc. etc. but the proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say. Or to sum up, You don't use the horn on corners and have a problem, I do use the horn and don't Which presumably includes recording that you did not bother using the horn, and thus did not do all you could have to avoid an accident...
  19. Bearing in mind that you can stop from 70mph in around 100 meters, what kind of speed are you approaching a 30mph or less bend that necessitates a horn sounding from hundreds of meters away in order to give adequate warning? 50 meters, or even under 25 meters is more than adequate if the bend is sharp, and if your horn can't be heard from such a short distance then there is something wrong with your horn, insulated cars or not.
  20. Because you don't bother using a horn as a warning? On any single lane road where visibility is restricted by a bend or a hump back bridge I always sound the horn as a warning, since sound does travel round corners, is that not what the horn is for? Certainly has saved me what may have been a a couple of head ons since the car coming the other way was already slowing down before he saw me because he heard the horn.
  21. I studied in Cardiff. On several occasions waiting in the queue at Mcdonalds the couple in front of me were happily chatting away in Welsh...

I fail to see any resemblance to the level playing field I described, let alone 'very much like' other than there happens to be a car and a train involved. And I have not even got to the cost. In many cases it is cheaper and quicker to rent a car and fuel it than buy the train ticket(s)

I have often wondered about that. Pick two random towns/cities, lets say with a minimum population of 100,000, at least 150 miles apart and each with a railway station. Pick a random residential address in each of those towns. Let us say it would be the equivalent of someone deciding to leave their home to visit a friend or relative. Pick a random start time - say between 9.00am and 6.00pm on a Saturday. Both competitors start sitting down in the lounge, and lets say that at 9.21 the flag drops. Mr motorist gets in to the car and drives off, whilst Mr train starts looking for a bus or taxi to take him to the railway station, then may have to wait 20 mins or more for the first train, maybe having to make one or two connections each waiting 20 mins or more since both towns are not on the same line, then bus/taxi at the other end... In most cases unless it is very long distance or a commute to work the car will wipe the floor on a proper level playing field...
  24. I bought the T-gauge HST set. I was not expecting such superb running from something so small. The slow speed performance was incredible, very smooth right down to inch a minute speeds if so desired. Blue and Grey might be a little out of era, but the full HST rake running across that at an appropriate scale speed would look amazing. Does anyone do the transfers to re-livery one to something more modern? An absolutely superb model!
  25. That's Series 2 equipment. It is the standard for new electrification for speeds up to 100mph.
