  1. John In Jol's original article (MRJ 52) he says he used Humbrol "facings yellow". This is Humbrol 169 which is matt. All lining experts I have read advocate using gloss paints. He further states that Brian Badger uses Yellow No. 69 which is gloss. Larry Goddard (ex-Coachmann of this parish) suggests a 50:50 mix of 69 and 7. I have used both 69 and the 50:50 mix but I find the 69 too bright, translucent and runny even when mixed. The result is that even a thin ruled line spreads once on the coach side producing too thick a line. However, today I just spent the past few hours lining with neat Humbrol 7 and this has given the result much closer to what I want to achieve. As these are GWR coaches I will post pics in my thread. Peter
  2. Is that right? Humbrol 27 is Sea Grey? whereas 69 is gloss yellow. Some use Humbrol 7 which is Tan. Precision Paints also do an LNWR coach lining paint. Any opinions as to which is best for lining? As I model the LNWR/GWR joint, I am trying to develop a coach lining technique that is common to both and using the same "gold" would help.
  3. The York mail as previously mentioned was made up of LNWR Post vehicles in 1912 which ran between York and Cardiff. I believe the GWR objected and they were replaced with GW vehicles from 1915. (Edit. according to notes I have, no 864 L10/L11 (from Bettabitz etched brass sides) 40' TPO Van was reallocated to this Cardiff - Crewe Mail Train in 1916. The LNWR vehicles were 6 wheel. I have both LNWR and GWR kits so will apply rule 1 to use both!). In the winter programme of 1911 fish trucks ran between Grimsby and Cardiff
  4. From memory and without consulting my documents, in 1912 there was an LNWR through carriage between Newport and Newcastle that was attached to a variety of local trains. It returned as the only passenger vehicle on the south bound York mail. I will double check this but as it was not timetabled on express passenger trains it may have escaped the published through carriages programmes.
  5. Herewith some more projects nearing completion which go back to the start of this thread. All 3 owe a lot to the Martin Finney Dean Goods kit that contains many spare alternative parts: 2306, furthest from camera, is mainly a Mallard kit with a Comet chassis. Some Finney parts including the earlier cab side profile. 2524 in the middle has a sprung Comet chassis and is mainly Finney alternative parts on a Mallard footplate. Tender is also Finney. 2478 has a High Level chassis and Jidenco tender. The loco is a combination of Mallard, Finney and scratch-built parts. Awaiting to be DCC'd. This might get sound too.
  6. 3 and a half years ago I threatened to produce a sandwich frame tender. And here is one (behind my Beyer Goods): Just got to paint the brake gear, which was added today, and waiting on the number plates 334 from Narrow Planet.
  7. Thanks. A lot of GWR but next stage is to finish off the LNWR stock that is half finished.
  8. Very nice. Just the plumbing to do then! I have a number of locos stalled at this stage...
  9. Based on the post of 3 March. A business decides whether it wants to furlough its employees not the Government and this decision was thus taken by the business. Furlough has been a lifeline for many during this pandemic. I work in hospitality and I agree that being shut is not helpful to customers.
  10. I am assuming this is his own business and if you had the opportunity for the Govt to pay you to stay off work would you willingly go back early of your own accord? I have been wondering whether he would attend any exhibitions in September or leave it to the very end.
  11. Furlough continues to September
  12. Although most trains do go through my station at a scale 50 mph non-stop, I would intend to have a Precedent (and Whitworth come to that) stop and start on locals. So would need sound recordings of all motion including stationery.
  13. Gibson sell P4 spacers as do Comet or you could make you own; 15mm wide. But some older kits need a lot of fettling to get the wheels clear of the splashers.
  14. I only have allocations for 1912 earliest: Northampton ‘Large Jumbo’ 381 Patterdale, 870 Fairbairn Rugby ‘Large Jumbo’ 477 Caractacus, 506 Sir Alexander Cockburn, 517 Marathon, 787 Clarendon, 862 Balmoral, 1480 Newton, 1748 Britannia, 2187 Penrith Beacon, 2192 Caradoc
  15. Will this be sound enabled and if so, which sound file will be used? Are there recordings of Hardwicke when it was in steam? Edit: I’ve since read on the Rails site that the tender has a 21pin socket and a sugar cube 11x15 speaker. No mention of any decoders.
  16. I have some P4 Sharman wheels where the axles have not been supplied to length. You have to cut them to length yourself. You won't get through them with a piercing saw. I use a Hacksaw. I've found a number of Gibson axles come up short in P4 too.

  18. On the LNWR/GWR North to West joint line the LNWR initially had responsibilities for the signalling. This switched to the GWR around 1907. But the LNWR signals remained. About the same time the GWR took on the Pway. How much of it and when it might have been replaced is anyone’s guess.
  19. Thanks. It is far from perfect. This had been glued and also in places soldered using standard solder. It spent years in solutions to remove the paint and glue and to dismantle itself. Eventually I managed to pull it apart. Then the footplate spent some more years pinned to a board to straighten it. the wheels are Gibson (P4) and I split 3 outside cranks during the assembly. Luckily I had some spares. Mashima 1420 motor with a high level gearbox. Beam compensation allows all wheels to move. Hornblocks are MJT. the tender has 3 point compensation and pick ups too. The speaker is in the tender. Just the toolboxes to fit and then prep for the paintshop.
  20. GWR Beyer Goods. Bought as a wreck of parts on ebay. Many parts missing but I recognised what it was, now merged with Dean Goods and other elements from the spares box. Scratch built chassis. K's Broad Gauge Rover tender converted and also on scratch built chassis. DCC sound with cube speaker in the tender. Front springs will be sorted once it's painted. Brake gear still to do:
  21. Yes I expected a hiatus of fantastic modelling but the past year on all fora has been underwhelming
  22. IIRC This has wheel centres for both City and Bulldog
  23. I agree. Looking forward to the LRM LNWR locos. Will these be P4?
  24. What is the impact of this on the lever frame?
  25. Surely further evidence that there was never a GWR "brown" period only "rich dark lake". "Dark Lake as before but was not varnished so thoroughly and has been quoted as 'brown', possibly due to weathering. " And again evidence that lake weathered to brown with poor varnishing
