  1. The late lamented Iain Rice was a great wordsmith and provided inspiration to so many people in the books he wrote. The last of his books aimed at the UK prototype was ‘Creating Cameo Layouts’. Heavily featured in this book is the last layout he designed and built ‘Longwood Edge’. It was built jointly with Don Leeper with whom he had previously built Hepton Wharf, one of the first Cameo layouts. Longwood Edge is 4mm scale P4 and built on two levels with L&Y on the lower level and LNWR on the upper one. The layout has been exhibited twice, in basic form at Scaleforum in 2015 and again at Railex 2019 about 80/90% finished. After that South Hants Model Railway Club (SHMRC) member Tony Sullivan offered to help finish the layout but COVID struck. Don unfortunately succumbed to COVID in the April of the first lockdown and with Iain’s declining health the layout remained at Don’s house unchanged from its last outing. Roll on three years and Don’s wife Pauline was keen to see the layout finally completed and exhibited. Through Tony Sullivan the SHMRC offered its services to complete and exhibit Longwood Edge, the SHMRC has a long association with LNWR and L&Y layouts through its EM LNWR/GWR Hope-under-Dinmore, P4 L&Y Ogden Fold and Eastwood layouts so we thought we were reasonable candidates for the job. We are pleased to announce that Pauline has accepted the SHMRC’s offer and custodianship of Longwood Edge has passed to the SHMRC. As part of agreement, we have also taken over the custody of Hepton Wharf. Both layouts have been collected and are now in our possession. Longwood Edge needs to be evaluated to work out what exactly needs to be done to finish it scenically and make it exhibition friendly. but it will be at the new Scalefour South East which is part of the Uckfield show on 21st and 22nd October where it will be in much the same state as it was last exhibited at Railex. The aim is to have it completed for possibly Larkrail 2024 but definitely the SHMRC show in November 2024. Hepton Wharf is just about up and running after 13 years of storage, but needs some TLC. It is temporarily going to the L & Y society who are going to refresh it and exhibit it at their modellers weekend at Todmorden on 25th March this year. The layout will then come back to the SHMRC where It may be exhibited at EXPO EM Spring, that is yet to be confirmed. It will also be going to the Uckfield show and completing the year at the SHMRC show in Portsmouth on 18th November. Details of the Uckfield show can be found here. Uckfield 2023 We will be creating layout pages on the SHMRC website within the next few weeks. Further details of the South Hants Model Railway club can be found at: SHMRC Website Dave Smith Chairman South Hants Model Railway Club.
  2. I was lucky today to see these Iain Rice original water colours of a couple of his layout designs. The owner has kindly agreed for me to post these for you all to see.
  3. As someone who is involved with running an exhibition and do a lot of the online advertising including RMweb. It is a simple matter to include a brief explanation of what the layout is about and I consider it essential.
  4. Bristol is 28th, 29th and 30th April. I will be taking Brighton East.
  5. 6. Not according to the website, members only, that is why I am asking here. Picture below is screen shot from the website.
  7. I am after either a full fret or part fret of 4mm scale Dingham Couplings. I need sufficient parts to make up 12 couplings. If anyone can help please message me, letting me know how much you want for them. Thanks in advance.
  8. Duncan So reminds me of the Blue Peter Layout that Christopher Trace used to wheel out. You just need the Triang Suspension Bridge R264 to complete it. Have fun tomorrow.
  9. Marc Sorry if I offended you with my comment, it was never intended to do that.
  10. The Flippem is not the original Dingham, but a modified version. The rights to the both 7mm and 4mm were acquired by O Gauge Guild (Both types are listed on there website but only to members). I have been told by someone who is involved in the Scalefour Society that they have acquired the rights to the 4mm version from the O Gauge Guild who retain the 7mm version. How and if the S4 guys will make them generally available to the public without having to join the S4 Society my contact is not privy to. Personally I think it will be a shame if they are not. Perhaps the S4 Society would like to comment?
  11. At the NEC you pay for how much floor area you use, not the use of the hall. Hence why there are unused spaces around the exhibition Makes it great for pack up at the end of the show though as you can park your car in the unused space and carry the layout to the car rather than waiting to get your vehicle into the exhibition area.
  12. On behalf of the SHMRC I would like to thank all the exhibitors, traders and of course the general public who attend our show yesterday. Numbers were slightly down on last year, some rail disruption and a problem with it being late into the Railway Modeller may not have helped, but it was still very busy. Everyone we spoke to, Layouts, Traders and the visitors all seemed to have enjoyed themselves. The only adverse comments as usual being the school refectory stopping serving food early, which is something we do not have any control over. We think the choice of layouts presented something for everyone to enjoy along with a nice, varied selection of trade support. A couple of weeks to get over the show (we are also taking Hope-under-Dinmore to Manchester in three weeks time) and we resume planning for next years show, which layout wise is pretty much there. Anyway thanks to all again and see everyone same place on Saturday 18th November 2023.
  13. 2 Days to go. final pack up at the club tonight, then down the pub!
  14. How about something a little different, some lovely American narrow gauge.
  15. Another layout at the show. Dave Hawkins Great Bardfield, which is celebrating its 30th Anniversary on the exhibition circuit.
  16. David Catering arrangements are as follows: Main school restaurant will be open from 10:30 until 13:00, so you will be able to get a meal up until 13:00. After that the small coffee shop (which was closed last year due to work being carried out in the school) will be open until 16:00 serving drinks and snacks. Whilst this is not ideal and it is an improvement, we are limited by what the school is willing to provide.
  17. Only a couple of weeks to go and things are all shaping well. To try and temp a few of you to come along to the show. Here are some Photos of Harlyn Pier, it is one of my favourite layouts with great atmosphere and beautiful attention to detail. 18. The South Hants Model Railway Club will host the annual Portsmouth Model Railway Exhibition on Saturday 19th November 2022 at: Admiral Lord Nelson School on Dundas Lane, Portsmouth, PO3 5XT Opening time between 10:30 and 16:30. As usual we have a carefully chosen selection of top-class model railway layouts and demonstrators, supported by a loyal band of traders and ‘gauge’ societies. There is limited parking at the school, but we hope to have access to the car parks of some local business and the Ocean Retail Park opposite the school has free unlimited parking (except for McDonalds which has a time limit). We are aware that money is tight for many people and we have kept our admission prices low at £6 for adults with accompanied children (under16) going free. 20. As a member of the Hope under Dinmore team (I drove the van), these are my comments on the operator experience. Agree the Venue toilets are a bit sparse but were never full. We were also 20 minutes away from the venue, which whilst not ideal it is no different to Warley, Ally Pally or a number of other exhibitions I have done. My only beef was, we had two layouts at the show but we were in different hotels. Breakfast was fine and as good as a Holiday Inn Express and far better than a Travel Lodge. We arrived about 2:30pm Friday having driven up from Portsmouth and set up was no issue for either of our layouts except it is a fair treck to load/unload if your right at the back of hall 1! The barriers were easily moved and the wide aisles meant you have plenty of room to manouvre so I did not see any issue here. It was a bit quieter than I expected and I hope the show was a success, but thanks to the organisers for an enjoyable time even If I did not get to bed until midnight last night.
  21. Souths Hants MRC on tour! Just picked up the van for Hope under Dinmore, will be loading up this evening along with Eastwood in a separate van ready for the long hall up from the South Coast for both layouts and their operators. This event involves nearly half of our membership! But we are all looking forward.
  22. You can never have enough loco's or rolling stock.😀
