Sure is, guys! And I'll be saving the pennies to see an operational Big Boy too, should it happen. There have been rumours and plans about restoring a Big Boy before. But this time I think some credence should be given to the fact that UPRR want to re-acquire a 4000-series 4-8-8-4 for operation, and that the story is being carried by the respected 'Trains' magazine. We await with bated...

I agree BlackRat. Although I thought the two recently-broadcast programmes - "The Golden Age of Steam Railways" - presented our interests most intelligently (apart from the bloke in Programme One surrounded by a train set and Lionel boxes!), and without the usual mocking tone. Well done BBC Four!

That would be amazing. Always seemed to be a dead cert that no Big Boy would ever run again. Would go down a treat on the Pontypool and Blaenavon.

Bring it to Oz and let it run across the Nullabor. That would be a wonderful sight.

  8. Well, that's S scale for you: S is for Surprising! Oh yes, there are indeed several well known larger S scale layouts which are currently (or were once) on the exhibition circuit. For instance, bigger-than-your-average-branch-terminus layouts are 'East Lynn & Nunstanton' (GER, soon to be retired as a home layout), 'Kilbrandon' (Irish BG), 'Yaxbury' and rest of branch (BR(E), was an exhibition layout, now a home system), 'Thame' (GWR, now retired), 'Wandle Valley' (LBSC, resident in Canada and currently being replaced with another large S scale layout), and 'Kopikopiko' (New Zealand Sn3½, was an exhibition layout, now part of a larger UK-based home system), to name but a few. Also of note is an extensive UK-based American prototype home layout based on the Palatine, Lake Zurich & Wauconda Railroad ('The Old Maud') branch in Illinois being built by one of our members. Check out our SSMRS layout galleries here http://www.s-scale.org.uk/gallery.htm, and Ian Hammond's NZ S scale blog here http://uknzrmodeling.blogspot.co.uk/. A glimpse of Mike Cleverley's extensive UK-based American layout can be seen here http://sprockets.myz...eJun2012Web.PDF, here http://sprockets.myz...SGazetteWeb.PDF (scroll down on both these links), and here http://groups.yahoo....693261/pic/list. Anyway, I hope the above convinces you that we don't just do small branch line termini (although we do those as well). As in any other scale, you can make S scale and our exact scale track and wheel standards work on layouts large or small, it's just a matter of diligence and practice. I hope you are persuaded to have a go too!
  9. You are most welcome to the S scale challenge, Francis. No, it's not too difficult. But I don't think that's the reason for the lack of Walschaerts-geared steam locos in the Society website galleries. It's probably more a case that many earlier British steam locos, as modelled by many of our members, were built with inside motion. But if you intend to model in S scale then you can expect to have to make most of the locomotive from scratch. So it is perhaps a personal choice whether you build a steam locomotive with Walschaerts valve gear or not, as this depends on the design preference of your chosen prototype railway. Taken step-by-step, scratchbuilding a Walschaerts-geared locomotive shouldn't be too much of a problem - in S or in any other scale. Anyway, if you try it Francis, show us how you did it!
  10. I recommend that you read The 2mm Scale Association's 'Beginner's Guide'. This will give you a good grounding in miniature finescale track construction, whatever standards you use. But while your at it - go 2mm Finescale! It's much easier to build trackwork to this consistent and proven standard, which will give you better running than any N gauge, and is better looking too. Anyway, good luck!
  11. Bums! I'm gonna miss Swindon Rail Fest this weekend (lotsa S scale on show) :(

Sounds like a particularly bad piece of planning, Mr.C :-(

    3. Phil Copleston

      Phil Copleston

Indeed. As well as the S scale goodies, Jerry and Kim are taking 2mmFS 'Tucking Mill' (its 1st dry run before Warley, I believe), and that nice N-gauge 'Bodmin' layout will be there too. Bad planning, Mr.L? It's catastrophic!! :'(

  12. Thanks Jerry! Nice roller, looks like an Aveling http://en.wikipedia....k_-_1342806.jpg Good point about rummage boxes at shows, I do exactly the same. Amazing what you can find, and usually cheap too. My personal challenge is to try and find something suitable for S scale - and I often do, such as road vehicles or human figures. But my best 'cop' yet was a complete S scale etched loco kit (a test etch lurking under one of the 4mm manufacturer's stands) revealed after an idle inquiry at Scaleforum a few years ago, and all for 15 quid! Who'da thought it... BTW, don't forget to water your onions
  13. Exquisite Jerry! Your 2mm traction engines are a delight, but appear to be quite different from each other (different boiler, cylinder and wheels). Were these based on the same Scalelink kit? Can't help you with a Foden steam lorry - scratchbuilding seems to be the only option. But I particularly like steam road rollers, and the sight of one of these towing a living van and bowser would make a nice cameo on Queen Square. I think Scalelink already offer a road roller and living van kits. (Hint, hint, Jerry!) And your vegetable patch seems to be based on a prototype very close to home... Well observed Mr Good!
  14. Off to Wells for the show today - looks like a good 'un!

  16. Is there an RMweb app icon for Android phones? It would be very helpful to check on updates by touching an icon, rather than going via bookmarks or Google search every time. If not, someone please make available! Phil Copleston
  17. What's amazing, Jerry, is that it's very hard to tell from the photos what scale these models are, with no scale give-aways. In my book that's always a good sign of modelling excellence. And I like your approach to a modelling magnum opus - break it down into sub-projects and seek out variety to keep stagnation at bay. Good advice.
  18. Superb, Jerry. You seem to have at least half the scenic side of the layout already done in sections and waiting for instalment!
  19. Off to CamRail this weekend - looking forward to a jolly time!

@David: O ye of little faith. It takes skill and time to do a 'proper job' and fit dove-tail joints and lathe-turned supports, don't ya know. Ha ha, not that I'm doing it that way, of course. I'm just a lazy git really! Still, I did a wee bit more tonight...

@Andy: I'm looking forward to that stage too. Not so keen on all this other stuff, truth be known. Sod the woodwork! (if I could) :D

  22. Good to hear that, Martin. Next step is to try it for yourself. The thing about S scale is - you'll know if it's right for you!
  23. Me too! Very inspirational models, Jerry. I particularly like the little Bath Single Line Junction Box. So evocative, I can almost hear the wall clock ticking and the line bells 'dinging' just looking at it. With full interiors, are your signal boxes illuminated perchance? They remind me that I must try harder. Many years ago I scratchbuilt a MR box in 2mm finescale, completely out of plastikard (though nothing to compare with your exquisite models) which I was very proud of at the time and with which I even won a few prizes. Sadly though, it melted away one evening after an unfortunate spilt MekPak-related incident on my workbench. Boy, was I gutted! Which reminds me to make one of those multiple holey paint pot holder thingies before it happens again... Anyway, keep up the inspirational 2-mil work. And take no notice of my disparaging remarks about tree-trunks at Taunton - I was only teasing! Can't wait to see it all come together on Queensquare in the not too distant future.
  24. S SCALE EXHIBITION DIARY - where you can see S scale at forthcoming shows (regularly updated): S scale layout bookings and events for 2015-16 are shown. If you haven't seen a working S scale layout before, get to see one at the following exhibitions! 2017 S scale layouts are a bit thin on the ground this year (after retirement of several other well-known layouts). But I do know that more are under construction! Nevertheless, this is how the S scale diary currently looks... Listings for 2017 being updated... (please check back later. Ta.) NOTE: THIS LIST IS UPDATED REGULARLY AS NEW EXHIBITION DATES BECOME KNOWN - so please tell me of corrections and check back frequently! LATEST DIARY UPDATE: 19/12/2016, 02:02
  25. Sure thing, Neil. We'll catch up on S-scale things tomorrow, no doubt! I'd like a peek at that broad-gauge coach if poss. By the way, didn't I catch you on this video lurking around Maurice's S scale layout at Exeter show last year? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Rxzwkqz4K4&feature=player_embedded Be warned... S scale is addictive!
