Hi Rob, it's a new layout, now in development. I'm thinking part NER, part freelance industrial layout. It was originally intended as a 009 layout for running quarry hunslets but the scope grew and grew. I blame it on my shunter addiction - the growing fleet of industrials meant it was the only sensible thing to do.

The clapboard waiting room definitely gives a nice SER feel, even if the location is kept vague. I may have to steal that idea in future!

    Hi Will,

Indeed. All my layouts have been built because of either a loco or a particular building. Glad to see I'm not the only one !

Yes, the building is pretty similar to some I've seen. Like those on the former SER, this one could gain a canopy.

Never mind EM, what about Italian HO , you already have the shunters, and it would have to be Pecora of course, though a tad cheesy . Or French HO for a change? The station /layout would then of course be Mouton ...

Love the  station building by the way,

    Paul

    Hi Paul,

No plans for the Italian locos. I am considering moving them on to be honest. I have 3 Lima Expert Gr 851s and a Rivarossi Gr 835. I'm not so sure about the Kof ii or the Badoni which are just delightful. I mean the steam locos are lovely as well........As you can tell, mind is made up......NOT...

  3. Thanks all.

More time on the layout today. Engine shed end now DASed and formers for the embankment cut and I'm starting to add these in. The bay is now wired but not finally laid as I need to finish the platform and lay that first, then finalise the bay line.

Frankly, I don't feel as if I have time to do expo EM but I think it will do me good so looking like I will be going on Sunday as working Saturday. I'm hoping to get there for doors open and I have a short list.

Shwt, Rob's ovine offerings, and Alastair's Middleton top are inspirational,

Thanks for the walk on part and kind endorsement, Jonners but a small procedural point, Middleton Top is @JustinDean. You're thinking of Ladmanlow by @Alister_G , Sadly Al hasn't posted much as of late. Damn fine modeller.

  5. Morning all,

Whilst there are no 'plans' today, I'm hoping to get a bit of modelling in with the main focus being in the general direction of adding said DAS around the engine shed and then hopefully measuring and siting it. That will be timewise, the most consuming. Anything after that is a bonus.

Tomorrow sees me working on someone else's layout, Saturday working in the shop and Sunday, potentially, I'm of to Expo EM at Bracknell.

No, I'm not thinking of going EM but it looks like a good show with a few hard to get to traders and it's "only up the road". Or....do I just work on the layout instead........?

Oh...oh ......and do I order some trees and other green stuff  from our Polish friends......?

    Looking good Rob.

You can certainly see from your snaps you've managed to achieve that sense of space and openness.

    Nicely done!

    Cheers,

    Mark

    Hi Mark,

The scenic section is a bit longer ( just over 4'6" ) but narrower by 1cm. I'm struggling to get past this stage to be honest but once I do I'll be a lot happier. The engine shed is probably the largest structure I've used to date on all the layouts. Much agonising over it but I think it works. It also seems to balance with the platform/ buildingsxat the other end.  I'm now torn between adding a few trees as per Ewe or going flat and open. I'll have a better idea once I start on the embankments etc which may be lower than first thought.

As uou can tell, I really am making this up as I go and sadly,  it shows.....but, as I mentioned above, I do feel I'm finally starting to get into it.

Indeed there it is on page 197, I must have glossed over that or forgotten reading it previously. One to add to the collection after I purchase the 3D printed 04 that's now available and merge it with a suitable chassis. I just hope it doesn't turn into such a farce as my attempts to buy a Ruston 165 body to merge with a Peckett chassis

Nick, see this excellent warts and all build by our very own @Gilbert

I'm certainly using the 1927 trial as a precedent for an occasional Sentinel Y3 visit. I also must get to grips with sorting a chassis for my Y10.

I've seen mention of the single cabbed Sentinels being trialled on the W&U, nut as yet, despite multiple books on the line, I've never seen evidence of this. Do you perchance know where I can find such a thing, I'm holding off purchasing and running one on Outwell Basin depot until I know for a fact that one was trialled and it isn't confusion with the Y10s.

    Hi Nick,

May 1927. A Y1, 8401,  was tried over line, including passenger duties. Trials were unsuccessful and 8401 was returned to Lowestoft sleeper depot.

Photo ( same one) in both the Oakwood and Middleton press volumes.

Of the current crop of Sentinels from Model Rail, 68144 seems to be the only Y1. The other three are Y3s.

I think MRJ would have been knocked off its perch, but was saved by the sad and untimely demise of Bob Barlow.

Do expand upon that remark. I suspect I know what is meant but at face value that seems rather insensitive and unpleasant.

Personally I think MRJ should be nearer £10/issue. (And posted out in board-backed envelopes again.)  And people need to realise that decent stuff has to be paid for at a realistic price, because the people producing it have to live.

    RichardT

Careful what you wish for. £10 an issue may be affordable for yourself but many might not be in that fortunate position. Such s move could ultimately affect sales. End result ? There'd be no MRJ.

Has anyone with a sound fitted Victory had issues with the Volume settings?  It would seem that on my model, the V- function key works OK, but the V+ does not.  If I inadvertently set the volume too low, I have to alter CV266 to correct this.  Is there a fix for this?

As the CVs have been altered, try doing a factory reset putting CV 8 back to 8. This will restore the factory settings to the decoder and put the address back to three. That should restore the volume to factory set level.

To be fair to Templecombe, they had an intermittent problem for a long while that caused the whole setup to 'Play Up' with unpredictable results including 'short circuits', sometimes shutting the whole lot off, and usually being fixed temporarily by doing what I would call 'a Power Off, Power On, Reset'.  Which seemed to fix things for a while until it went haywire again.  I believe it was fixed eventually by replacing the main cable to the Powercab handset.

Templecombe  is also complicated to operate because of the (for northbound trains) piloting of trains back to the off scene station platform or (for southbound trains) piloting them out of the off scene station platform back to beyond the junction by the signal box before they could continue their journey south.  This needs 2 operators alone, one for each loco at each end the train, this cant be done with a 'DCC Consist'.  Then there's another operator controlling all other train movements so that's 3 operators, then one controlling the points and signals via a PC, that's 4, one fiddling with stock in the fiddle yard, that's 5, and finally one having a rest having been on their feet for a couple of hours at a time, that's 6.   They do operate a rota shunting the jobs around to give everyone a rest.. They are all well past retirement after all.

All noted CB but much as I try and refrain from criticism of layouts at shows, and bearing in mind my liking of all things S&D, I visited Templecombe at least twice on Friday and as per @Crantock, nothing was moving* with a cluster of operators standing round chatting, with no engagement with the visitors stood in front of the layout. It was somewhat disappointing. Looked fab mind you but..............

    Rob

    * and yes I do have periods when nothing moves on mine at shows but that's because I'm chatting with the visitors. I'm simply incapable of making things go AND chatting.

I agree - another East Anglian branch line layout originally based on Eye with a Y14 (J15) will be great.

    Yum.

  13. To continue, too many layouts are spoilt by inadequate lighting. Great modelling but you can't see it properly. Shwt "pops".

I find it quite surprising that some layouts are still unlit at shows whilst others rely on 80s style spots etc.

It's easy for me with my predilection for Cameoesque presentation but I firmly believe layouts need to be seen, as advocated by the likes of Ian Rice, Chris Nevard and more recently, James Hilton etc.

  14. And on the subject of anticipation,Barry Norman's next layout should be a corker. East Anglian branchline, J15, love it.

  15. Thought Rapido's presence at the Bristol show was first class.

Corbs, Dan and Chris were really good company and a great advert for Rapido. Knowledgeable, enthusiastic and articulate. Add in the chance to look over the forthcoming Port of Par twins, E1, 01, Fireless etc etc and my day was made.

Roll on Maidstone I say !!

    Top stuff.
