  1. First copy of "Railway Modeller" I bought (Sept '70 '66?) had 'Garsdale Road' as RotM - very impressive and really pulled me into trying to make a realistic model rather than proliferating 'train sets'. EDIT: Correcting my flaky memory which reminded me that 'GR' had to at least be in the mid-60's... just after I had clicked on 'Submit'!
  2. Those Pacific locos that ended up working a 3-coach train down a branch line usually started at Waterloo with a 14 coach train... are the operating department supposed to delay their crack train(s) by changing to 'suitable traction' in mid journey?
  3. Is that an effect of the snow or do the two lines to the left of the train just end after the diamond crossings?
  4. The three 4GRI units were created in 1962 when three 4RES units (3056/65/68) had their full Restaurant vehicles converted to Buffet/Kitchen vehicles, with some seating (sort of a precursor to the Buffet vehicles in the 4BIG units which followed in 1964/65). The three 4GRI units were renumbered to 3086-88 when the rest of the RES units were withdrawn in 1964. The 4GRI units were withdrawn with the 4BUF units in 1972. At least two of the Gatwick south sidings were full of stored 4GRI/BUF units for several months in 1972 - the numbers I clocked then did change so guess Gatwick was used as a staging point between wherever they come from and Selhurst where they were stripped for usable components (for the still-in-use 4CORs) and then despatched for scrapping...
  5. Forget it - the Power car on the 2Hal has individual compartments, and the corridor on the Driving Trailer is on the opposite side of the vehicle, apart from the difference in design of the cab ends, different buffers, shape of the windows, etc, etc...
  6. When the weather was cold or wet, the cursing of the motorman could be clearly heard on one of the following occurrences: 1) When trying to remove the headcode from the opal glass, the frame is frozen in situ; 2) When trying to fit the headcode, accumulation of ice prevents fitment of the frame; 3) When trying to fit or remove headcode, wind/rain causes the frame to slip through the motorman's hand and fall into the 4-foot. - as related to me by my uncle, who had the privilege to drive the things on Coastway in the late 60s...
  7. Good job it didn't go a leeeetle bit further and wipe out all the electrical boxes...
  8. I thought I'd replied to this thread earlier saying +1 to the original suggestion... I'd like to put in my vote for the Class 73 in the 'Modern Image' (Electric/Diesel) category. Plain and boxy but beautiful in in its all-round flexibility and functionality... ** Edited to correct the link in the OP quote **
  9. Are the yellow lines on the BTM platforms to note to the platform staff where to safely store BRUTE trolleys, etc so that they are out of the way of the paying passengers? I can't imagine that 'Stand Back' lines would be needed on platforms where the severe curvature requires a speed restriction and the only non-stop trains would be freights. The yellow lines are a little further back from where they would normally be painted on platforms, anyway. The above being said, he scrolled up and took a look at the picture again - and noted that there are, indeed also 'Stand Back' lines painted in the appropriate places on the platforms, including the Bay platform - H&S gone mad???
  10. Try for pictures of the SW Main line out of Waterloo - Two-tone Green 47s with FYEs regularly appeared on what were ostensibly MN/WC rostered services during the last 18 months of steam there... so the chances of someone picturing a 47 and a steam-hauled service would be pretty good, particularly at Waterloo.
  11. Interesting photo - what's a "Tadpole" doing at Southampton Central? The obvious answer is 'nothing much' as it appears to be on a siding approximately where the old Southampton West End station used to be, but it is a long way from the Redhill-Reading line...
  12. 1967-1974 on the SR: 4BIG 7049-58, 4CIG 7337-7438, 4VEP 7701-7894, 2PEP 2001, 4PEP 4001/02; ScR Class AM11 (TOPS 311) 092-110. While not in the same volume as years prior to 1967, I wouldn't say that it was 'very few'. Just the image that I would like to portray on any layout I get the space to build - It hasn't stopped me trying to accumulate the stock for it, though. The blue stock behind looks like a reasonably new 4TC unit, the Mk1 Blue/Grey BSK has the early small lettering, mounted higher on the blue part of the bodyside than was to become standard. 1966-74 was the time scale that my friends and I were scurrying around the London area trying to 'cop' as many of the dying breed as possible and is the period of British railways (note the small 'r') that I remember the best. And would like to portray in model form.
  13. I don't see the word 'good' in the OPs question... in fact the words 'anything goes' are included.
  14. Bearing in mind how often it is on on the more obscure Freeview channels, it's surprising no-one's mentioned 'Under Siege 2' - unless I've not being paying attention
