  1. Hi Al I've also got a few hachette mk1s and decided to hack one into an SO for variety from all of the SKs, turns out it was easier than I thought, exteriors of SOs and SKs are identical except for roof vents I think and the interior was very compliant when I attacked it with a craft knife and glue, just don't look too close at the interior ! Alternatively you can buy parts to make a better one from various suppliers (southern pride, coopercraft, comet maybe ?) All done now, it looks the part and does make a change from the SKs. Sam
  2. I was on holiday at Dawlish warren during the week and had a great veiw of passing trains from the apartment ! I even managed to take a few pics ! First on Saturday 19/4 we saw 60007 on the Dartmouth express from Guildford to Kingswear return. Went to the South Devon Railway on easter monday but I forgot my camera ! Over the week saw a lot of HSTs..... ....Voyagers, 143s, 150s and a few 153s as well as the NMT, a DRS charter with top and tailed 47s ("solent" and "Rail Express Magazine" IIRC) and..... On Friday 25/4 Colas 70801 came through Dawlish warren with a rake of 25 NR ballast wagons. With the footpath closed to sea wall and langstone rock I had to stand on the sea wall just in front of the fence to get a half decent shot ! Later the same day the VSOE Pullman train hauled by 67024 and 67006 went through. Came home this morning so missed 5029 and 34046 Great weather and great Holiday though ! Sam
  3. hmmm, I feel like building a photo plank... I blame blueeighties thread and Andy Y's BRM article ! ;)

  4. Quite why BR decided to paint these vans white when steam locomotives were being used is beyond me ! Sam
  5. Hang on, that photo didn't make the cut, it's stunning!!! If that wasn't good enough for BRM I've got some high expectations now Thanks to Gilbert and everyone who posts for such a great layout and thread Sam
  6. Hi, sorry to hijack as well but I feel my project also adds to the "real" modelling debate. My own recreation of preserved ex LNER pigeon van 70759 is interesting in that I'm modelling a pigeon van that is mid way through a "non authentic" rebuild into a brake third, hence no diagram number. The real thing is destined for life in 1930s varnished teak on the SVR, however my model will be BR maroon on my (barely started!) 1960s era layout ! The model was made using a Hornby gresley donor with Ian Kirk sides hacked together and slotted in, interior made, then the thing painted and lined. The last things that need doing are replacing the roof vents and glazing it. I've had a similar thing happen.... Donor Gresley Buffet £15 Kirk sides £9 Paint £13 Transfers £4 Interior parts donor £1 ! Roof vents £2.50 Glazing £3 Total so far £47.50, almost as much as Hornby are trying to charge ! http://www.Hornby.com/shop/2014-range/coaches/r4531b-br-ex-lner-61ft-6in-full-brake-coach/ I agree wholeheartedly with this, I don't care how much my model has cost (in fact I never considered it until now !) it just feels good looking at it thinking "I built that" well some of it ! Sam
  7. Walk into the crowd surrounding the returns part of the Bachmann stand at Warley with a peg on your nose and spraying a can of deodorant ! (I am always surprised by the difference between the air quality in the crowd and 10 yards away from it ! ) Sam
  8. In case you've ever wondered when calculating the TE of the imaginary locomotive you've just thought up of where the formula for TE comes from, here is the derivation. http://www.engine-driver.com/article/show/1070/nominal-tractive-effort-explained I had always wondered how "they" got to this and as it turns out it's simpler than I first thought, just a lot of logical steps Sam.
  9. (in case the photo doesn't show here it is) I've been looking at the "How realistic are your models" thread too much, I glanced at the first image and thought it was a brilliant model of a H2 sat on a layout and started looking for the giveaways, I thought there wasn't enough clutter behind the engine and the track looked like it was just one colour ! Anyway, an interesting announcement with a lot of potential. I wonder why they decided to announce a model due in 2015 now in summer 2013 rather than March 2014 with everything else ? Sam
  10. My dad has found this 1/24 Lotus 97 on an F1 forum, I know it's not railway related but just look at the detail on it !!! The shots of the the nuts that are 0.5mm wide next to the coins then on the engine, just mindblowing. http://www.f1m.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=19258

Thats some of the finest modelmaking i think i have ever seen. All the parts he has replaced in the kit are superb. I couldn't help but think what he would be like if he was let loose on a O gauge kit by the likes of Finney.

  11. Is 17 today :O that crept up on me !

      Oh wait - it is!!!

Have a great day Sam! Three lifetimes and more to me - I started work, had money, and oh the railway I was going to build. Ermm, still planning it. Lesson: 17? grab the moment NOW!

  12. Is 17 today :O that crept up on me !

  13. On our visit one of them was a man, we could see his beard when we zoomed in on the picture ! Sam
  14. We went on a norwegian cruise a couple of years ago and went on the Flam railway and what a railway ! Even my mum was impressed by it ! The museum next door was pretty good too and helpfully everything had multilingual signs mounted next to them. Apparently the trains have 5 braking systems ! I'm not sure I can name 5 ! Sam, another very happy visitor !
  15. Got back from the Goodwood Festival of speed today, brilliant as usual just very, very hot !

Very lucky. Any Aussie cars this year?

Not any that I noticed... Could've been an aussie bike or dragster thing (not a real car in my opinion!) there that I didn't recognise. They had the replica of trevithicks steam carriage there and the Vulcan did a display too !

Nice touch with the steam carriage. I was over there in 2009, and managed to see the 'Moffstang' (http://www.bowdensown.com.au/allan-moffats-1969-trans-am-mustang)being driven around. Ah, memories...

  16. Hi, I just sent an email to the address you provided john and I've just noticed the e was missing out of the address when I sent my first one on the 22nd, whoops... Anyway I hope you got my email this time, so long as I didn't mess it up again ! Sam
  17. Hi everyone. I have also tried to contact the WLA to get hold of a model, I tried the contact us on the website and sent an email (5 days ago) and still had no reply. Does anyone have another email address or another foolproof (meproof!) method of contacting them as I want to make sure they still some models left ! Thanks, Sam
  18. I was about to try to apply for my provisional on the DVLA website, only to find it was down for maintenance. Oh well over to southern pride... damn two in a row !

  19. I thought that was a bit too quick ! Not really sure of the reasoning behind starting the very long overhaul of 75069 when we need more engines quickly, 45110 would have been a better bet, but then I'm biased ! I wonder whether the SMF will commission a ltd edition of 42968 when it was on the main line as LMS 2968 with 45110s tender, could do a double pack with 7325 or are the Bachmann mogul and 7325 different variants of GWR mogul? Sam (edited because I didn't proof read !)
  20. Got back from holiday to find almost 200 notifications on here, you lot have been busy !

  21. They've started the overhaul already Should help ease this lengthy motive power shortage we have though! Glad Bachmann announced this before I started hacking a stanier tank and a black five body about ! Sam
  22. Surprised there wasn't already a topic for this (or one that I could find!) so I'll start the ball rolling. Bachmann have announced that they will be producing an LMS stanier mogul, there will be 3 versions initially with a choice of flush or riveted fowler tenders. They are: 31-690 LMS Stanier Mogul 2955 LMS Lined Black Era 3 31-691 LMS Stanier Mogul 42969 BR Lined Black Early Emblem Era 4 31-692 LMS Stanier Mogul 42968 BR Lined Black Late Crest (Preserved) Era 5 (and 9) All feature 21 pin DCC sockets, tender pick ups and a £118.95 RRP. All information from the Bachmann website. I'm really looking forward to it if the recent models are anything to go by, probably going to be a while yet though as there aren't any CAD drawings or engineering samples on the site and little info about it. Sam.
  23. It's on the far left in this picture Larry. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_rel_module=post&attach_id=279551 Brilliant layout by the way great northern !
  24. I was spotting half way up the lickey incline today from 2-3 and just as I got there a DBS red 60 went up on an oil train, then I started speaking to a photographer nearby who had been there since 10:30. He said he had only seen 2 freights before I arrived. A 66 light engine passed on the up and then he left. In the next 15 minutes I was passed by a 66 on a steel train then an up nuclear flask train behind 2 37s immediately followed by a tamper on the down line! Good luck for me not so mu...

Right place and certainly right time for you.

  25. Volunteering today at Bewdley today I was sat on the platform eating a pot noodle as 5164 came in and then left. It was a gorgeous sunny day, and 5164 could be heard lifting it's train all the way up to the tunnel. Can anyone think of a better time/place to eat a pot noodle !

Reminds me of the story of the guy from Colorado who took a Pot Noodle back to the shop and complained that there was no pot in it!
