  1. I think most of us have those qualifications truth be told. SFQ sounds like a TOPS wagon code (handbrake only with air pipes!). I'm hoping to obtain a second-hand Hornby D49 for my version.
  2. Thanks for your hard work & report Steve. Think the 2P is my most favourable option tbh as they are compatible with the era & location I'm modelling. One thing did confuse me though -" the mounting screw that holds the money", can you elaborate please? Regards
  3. My GBL "Standard 4MT" is up for sale. I would just require basic cost plus cost of Royal Mail postage medium parcel. The model is still sealed in original packaging and is intact. Please Pm me if interested. thanks. Malcolm
  4. Thanks steve for that comprehensive reply I think Option 1 is the safest with my level of skills. On the subject of Airfix 2Ps there's no need to just for my account, but others may well aprreciate it. Regards
  5. Thanks for very useful advice and more punishing schedules(!) Steve. Would it be feasible to remove the GBL cylinders and transplant the Hornby ones instead? (or would that disrupt the dimensional inaccuracies further!) Thanks malcolm. Oh if you can check your Arifrfix ones sometime, that would be helpful.
  6. You've done a fantastic job as I far as I can see Sir! This is my next project after "Lima-rising" the GBL Deltic (which looks minor in comparison!). From your very comprehensive notes it looks an ardous task.! I presume that all the Hornby 2P models are identical chassis & motor-wise (ie there aren't all any that I shouldn't avoid second-hand!). I may well be picking your brains in future! A 1000 (no pun inteneded) thanks for putting all this info on here. Regards Malcolm
  7. You are correct on the last point, there was an article in "Rail Enthusiast" magazine (in the days when it was aimed at enthusiasts and not the drab industry rubbish it has become). I had this copy for many years, there was also a Portuguese version of the Class 50 as well.
  8. I blame that Portuguese N gauge model - I bet you've never put it down since you got it!! Would have loved to have seen your face when you discovered that in your parcel! On a serious note the last few posts on this page concerning subscriptions are like something out of BBC-1's Watchdog programme.
  9. That footage on the GBL advert intrigued me as well - am I correct in thinking there's no RTR verison of the Y7, so another GBL mystery for the American (or should that be Amercom) teenagers in the the van to solve!! Agree that the J72 is the obvious choice.
  10. Blimey! Someone's got some front claiming that the model is worth £14.99!! I did make the mistake of buying a London Transport RT model bus from them a few years ago (but I did get a travel alarm clock and huge LT poster which I sold framed from just under £10!), so doubtless I will receive a flyer in the post about this. Think that model is hideous!
  11. Now that's what I need to guard my German U-Boat model! Going back to the canvassers in WHS, it seems to be a national thing then. In the street I like to tell 'em "to go and play on the National Grid!" - very effective and no obscenties - well I do have some standards fgs!
  12. Anyone in South Yorkshire area still wanting the Midland Compound, WH Smiths in Barnsley had at least two this afternoon -right next to the entrance door - behind where the two canvassers stand. did n't go to inspect 'em (the locos) because of the aforesaid people. Can't stand canvassers btw!!
  13. Hi fellas - thinking of a second-hand purchase of a Clayton and have read every single post on this thread. Are there any particular models I should avoid (am wanting a green - pref of D86xx batch), many thanks in anticipation.
  14. D8512 was moved to Longsight 6/71 from the RTC and I was fortunate enough to see (and cab it!) in August that year - she returned to Derby 6 Oct '71. D8598 was moved from Polmadie to Longsight March '72 en route to Derby Works for overhaul - transferred to departmental stock in April, but was back at Longsight by 3 July that year. She was moved around to several locations, including Willesden Sept-Nov '72, but returned to Longsight by 2 Feb '75. Source: Allocation history of BR Diesels & Electrics 2nd Edition (Roger Harris) HTH.
  15. For all LNER fans Hatchette have launched a new partwork (today I believe - shown on ITV this aft) - an "O" gauge "Mallard" in garter blue - first issue 50p and then 129 more at £7:99 each. The body at least is in etched brass. The ad shows footage of it running on a length of track so is presumably is motorised(!). PS Also a German U-96 U-boat partwork launched (no pun intended) too (150 parts). (is there a website for WW2 militaria buffs I wonder!)
  16. Re. your. query on the "Standard 4MT"s outside of the Scottish and Southern Regionsi Quote from my 1962 Locoshed book as follows: Stratford - 80071/3-7 and Tilbury - 80103, Neville Hill 80116-20, some 15 or so had gone to the WR at this stage South wales and Shrewsbury areas. Holbeck had a pair briefly c.1959/60 too. Interestingly 80101 is shown at 99A (!!) (in error for 89A I suspect). Model Rail no. 68 June 2004 covers them in "Master-class" and the tug-of-war between some regions for them! HTH
  17. perhaps not, but there again did the Hatchette YRMV really catch on? Perhaps bogie vehicles would seem a better bargain to justify the cover price.
  18. In reply to James Harisson's post and a similar one a few pages ago it would be good if we could have a partwork that covered freight and passenger stock (parcels vans included). Conversions to runners would be relatively simple. Some decent coke wagons would be high on my wants lists for goods and an LMS design (POS) Post office vehicle (made famous in August '63!) -NOT- copied from the dreadful Tri-ang version!!! I can also take the opportunity on behalf of all of us to wish Weathering Man a speedy recovery, we're all missing you Sir!
  19. May i enquire why? Is this the one that was storred derelict at Toton well into mid-90s?
  20. I was under the impression that the "T9" would be issue 20, and issue 16 is "mystery guest" (at present!), can anyone enlighten me please? thanks
  21. A helpful WH Smiths branch!! - What many RMWebbers wouldn't give!!!
  22. Hi darrel! Just looking through "On Midland Lines" (Ian Allan) and p11 is a stunning colour view of 40646 (of Dumfries) at Bedford; and p31 40486 (well weathered) - the totems on these are lion holding dartboard within "hotdog shape"(!) and the latter is the lion on unicycle style, taken in April '62 and May '56 respectively. HTH. Like your spraying, oh that I could produce such results!!
  23. Mr Weathering Man - I am very much indebted to you for your recent advice. My mention of T-Cut came from something that i first read in "Detailing & Modifying Locomotives in OO Gauge Volume 1 British Diesel & Electric Locomotives 1955-2008" (phew not going to type that lot in again!) by the esteemed George Dent no less!! Just looked in the index and T-Cut's mentioned on eleven different pages in fact! I did try it on a Hornby 4F tender some years ago and appear to be have been fortunate from that. I will use Colgate from now on. Can I ask, do you have some qualification in industrial chemistry - you seem incredibly well informed on these matters - much to the benefit of everyone on this site. Thanks once again. Malcolm
  24. Reading the comments on paint/transfer removing fluids, I'll keep to using T-Cut I think for minor stuff and specific proprietary products for complete strip-jobs. I'd be absolutely gutted if I ruined a model through being a rush to get paint off, even if a GBL item! Looking forward to the Midland Compound tomorrow.
  25. Just looking in my 1959 Locoshed book - the Class 11s were on the ER, NER and LMR regions - some were allocated in the Warrington area sheds - Speke Junction, Sutton Oak, and Springs Branch - so well away from Liverpool-Southport third rail system. The end cab windows were also much close to the cab sides for some curious reason too I remember.
