  1. it's good to see this comparison. i was worried that the face and rake of the window pillar would look wrong on the Bachmann but i think, in the main, it compares favourably with the SLW although the SLW, to my mind, comes out top.
  2. Greys i dont have a problem with - it's generally browns/greens and reds that I cant tell apart. I often mistake greens for browns, reds for browns, oranges for reds etc. I don't want green wagons when they should be brown, I'll get laughed at if I posted photos here
  3. The link TheQ provided for railway colours and their Halfords equivalent is what i need but for Vallejo and Games Workshop paints: https://www.rafkinlossmrc.co.uk/
  4. I've looked at this Smokebox' but there's no way for me to match to BR colours
  5. Ahh except their railway colours aren't on their conversion chart in the link you provided. It's a nightmare.
  6. We're getting there - there's a couple there that cover my period. I'm certain someone must have a full list somewhere.
  7. There are only a handful of BR colours in the life colour range so they are easy to compare and buy the equivalents (not in Vallejo or Games Workshop acrylics though which are my preferred paints) but for example there's no engineers olive or RTC red that I can see and I'd be looking to find something similar in the Vallejo or Games Workshop ranges and I've no way of telling. For example, for a Western roof, Phoenix recommends Phoenix P114 and I can't find and have no way of knowing what's the nearest Games Workshop paint. Does this make sense?
  8. I can't compare the colours in the first place Mike. I don't know the difference for instance between RTC red/bufferbeam red/royal mail red etc. So even if I looked at all the humbrol reds I probably couldn't tell the difference between those in their range yet alone compare them to BR colours. They all look the similar or the same. What I require is a name of a paint and it's equivalent BR colour i'e: Games Workshop 'Blood Red' = 'BR bufferbeam Red'
  9. It was comparable to this in the link below in pdf format with, in the first column, all BR colours such as early bauxite/late bauxite/buffer beam red/rail blue/diesel green/roof grey/early warning yellow/late warning yellow etc and in the next columns the names of the equivalent paints by different manufacturer. https://www.paint4models.com/paintchart/paintconversionchart.html#
  10. Thanks Mike but I can't see the colours to begin with and the modelling equivalents are just numbered without any indication of their specific reference to BR Blue era rolling stock.
  11. Thank you Nile. I've seen these. I was hoping for a comprehensive list.
  12. Thanks all. I maybe didn't make myself clear enough in my initial post. Many moons ago someone on the forum posted a chart that was a very extensive spreadsheet of model manufacturer's paints and their BR equivalents. It showed Humbrol/|Games Workshop/Vallejo/Tamiya/Halfords etc and their match to BR colours across all eras. I'm looking for a comprehensive list of equivalents for *all* paint ranges between rail colours for freight/departmental stock/passenger/NPCC stock/RTC/BR Blue locos/LL Locos/Stratford specials etc but I'd be especially pleased if I found just for Vallejo and Games Workshop paints as I can get a supply of those close to where I live.
  13. Thank you. That's highly useful for the halfords paints. I was looking for equivalents across all ranges. I generally model in 'n' gauge and paint with acrylics.
  14. hi Ben, thank you for this but it seems i need something called 'play store' on my computer before i can download the app and I've searched for it and I don't have that on my PC.
  15. Hi all, Many moons ago I had a copy of a chart showing model paint manufacturer's products and their railway equivalents. Has anyone come across anything similar recently that's fairly up to date. I'm pretty badly colour-blind and I've just started modelling again after some time out and can't colour match on my own. I'm particularly interested in rolling stock colours during the Br Blue period.
  16. Hi all, I'm about to build some "n' gauge short wheelbase wagons using the Peco 10 foot wheelbase chassis. I'm going to be using the Dapol East-Shunt NEM coupler pockets which I have on order. Has anyone undertaken such a conversation and, if so, could you give me any pointers/advice/warnings before I start hacking things around please. (I'm also interested in hearing from anyone who has fitted NEM pockets to the Chivers/Slimrails OTA). Cheers, Peak.
  17. I recall there being a wire fence between the siding and the mainline, a scrap yard close by and an industrial building with corrugated sides that the track ran through. i think the loco was in white livery.
  18. Hi all, I recall making regular journeys west from Manchester Victoria in the mid to late 80s and somewhere up near Salford, on the left, was an industrial yard of some description. I recall seeing a shunter there that looked somewhat like a class 07. Can anyone provide any details or info please (I'm aware that 07001 belonging to Harry Needle was based around here in the early 2000s but this was back in the 80s I'm referring to)
  19. Hi Paul. It's many years since i went to an exhibition. Are you exhibiting a layout or a promoting a book(s)?
  20. geologist's hat on. look at the real thing and study it closely. i see all too often the correct attention to detail regarding buildings/infrastructure etc whilst rock exposures sometimes seem to be conjured up from the imagination. the photos you've chosen as your prototype show thickly bedded, well jointed sandstones, that are horizontal. the last point is a bonus for you as you can just stack in layers as Alistair G has done above and not have to worry about 'dipping' beds. good luck.
