  1. Stick to the modern manufactured locos from Bachmann and Dapol. If you can, give yourself flexibility with DCC ready locos, it might narrow choice but if you decide later to go DCC then it will be easier.

Also try and look for NEM couplings as you can easily swap out for Dapol easishunt couplings for hands free operation.

I think you might find N secondhand is cheaper via EBay. I couldn't sell some of my almost new locomotives at £85 and seeing them much less in biding makes me think for a buyer there are bargains to be had.

I went to OO a couple of years back, I sold some N but I've kept the vast majority as I want to do a proper N layout sometime.

Dapols 45xx (not DCC ready) are nice little locos once run in, don't pay more than £40 for one though as Dapol were flogging them cheap for £50 a couple of years back. The Ivatt 2-6-2 is another nice but not DCC Dapol loco. Steer clear of the Dapol M7 it couldn't pull the skin off custard. On much the same chassi is the 14xx but that isn't so poor and you'll likely only have an auto coach on it.

All recent Farish stuff runs sweetly.

  2. Bachmann missed a trick not doing a new tender with space for a chip and a speaker on the Collett Goods.

I too think a modern day 2721 would be nice plus some clerestory coaches as well.

I don’t need a Manor but it’s a big gap that no one is claiming which makes you wonder.

Ironically I am about to put half my GW locos back into their boxes, my layout is too SR for them but I still want a Mogul and a Large Prairie.

Edited to add phrase "on the Collett Goods"

  3. I'll bet most of today's members of this forum are RTR collectors, so do they loose their box opening mojo?  While my modelling mojo is having a sabbatical, I am enjoying tipping RTR onto the desk and admiring the detail.

It's nice to be looked down on Coach, depression, anxiety or mojo is nothing to do with whether you are a RTR modeller or a highly skilled model maker.

  4. I certainly didn't see you as a troll, unless you were one that waited 3 years to spring up and complain.

The only thing I would say you might have been quick off the mark to raise a case with paypal but ultimately that's your prerogative.

I ordered some tyres last week online from National - it took them 4 days to issue the order on email, I think because they don't confirm till they have sourced and arranged delivery of the product but I allowed them time to respond.

It's very easy to assume everyone has whizzy software solutions that automate everything, but in reality there is a lot of smoke and mirrors (council web sites are a good example) and behind that order is a person on the end of an email and if they are not accessing their emails then they cannot acknowledge the order.  When I was selling on Ebay I wouldn't always see every notification and it could be the person is away and didn't think to put something on their shopfront to warn people, it's like an email out of office, sometimes people simply forget.

Please don't let what happened put you off posting again on this site, not every post results in sniping.

  5. It has to be said that there is a market for a new Mk3 - now that Scotland and GWR have sliding doors plus the plug doors on Chiltern then to model any of these you need a new moulding - so there is an opportunity to do a new Mk3 - Rapido also do all variations so there are the various types of buffet car that have existed as well.

Even though Hornby have had the market for all these years there is no reason why someone couldn't come up with a higher specification version and bolster their position with the latest variations too.

That then opens up the HST prototype and production versions from Rapido as an own brand plus an NRM commission.

Listen to me getting all wish listy for something I wont buy.

  6. Why would it cost that much?

Other companies manage to create a variety of locos, wagons, coaches that don't sell for that (combined) price.

People throwing up the £1000 mark for train models appear to be guessing at best. Can anyone point to their costings or at least a proper justification on why they think it would cost so much? Saying "a coach would be £75" has no factual evidence, nor is "rising costs in China". As I say, other companies are continuing to produce models fine at the moment.

    It's about cost and balance.

Produce something that is too expensive and you won't get the orders in.

It'll be interesting to see what will make the Bachmann Class 158 worthy of it's £200-£300 price range.

If Rapido make a model it is a high spec one, they don't do budget - they tried it, didn't like it.

And if you are going to do a limited edition model and attract both players and collectors it needs to be high quality - Hornby don't do Railroad for the collectors market.

  7. I keep away from DCC and keep my DC very simple too.

The weekend before last I did some woodwork and widened my main board, then I decided rather than add to what was already an unsatisfactory station layout I would clear the board. Having done some research on the North Cornwall line I designed a new layout and set about building it last weekend.

Remembering to plan ahead I actually installed the points for the run round first and got their point motors working and put in the basic wiring I needed under the board too. Knowing that was all sorted I could then concentrate on the track and by the end of Monday I had my new station and it gained a name too Port Isaac.

This weekend I will complete some fiddleyard changes and then get some running time. The weekend after as the wife is away I will in between EM North be building the station and goods yard platform.

I am even contemplating a return to N as a side project.

And all because I deleted all those time waster games off my iPad, these were a great way to lose hours when I was feeling anxious or lacking confidence.

  8. Cue a wishlist of every British diesel locomotives including yet more class 24s as the SLW was still not refined enough for everyone.

Given the duplication of a large class like the 66 then there must be a market for another 47 - lots to go at in variations, long life and still in use today.

    Otherwise a Peak

    Or a 40

    Or a 37

    Or a 55

    ..............

  9. On my lack shelves I've installed a couple of surface mounted Peco motors, one will end up hidden by the platform, the other will need disguising. These points are away from the controller so I motorised them as I am lazy, the rest are digitally operated. All my wiring is above board on the lack part. I've used three Lack shelves in an L shape for my layout, I've extended the width on the station with some ply and two by one screwed into the side of the shelf and it is secure.

I'm not sure I would want to start cutting into the shelf itself lest it does begin to weaken the structure, though they do take nicely to having bits screwed into them a la my extension.

  10. I think what Dapol (and others for that matter) don't like is a feeling of being preached to.

Demonstrating an issue using clear examples and suggesting possible solutions are all acceptable as is taking Dapol's (or other manufacturers) final words on a subject if the request is beyond the scope of the cost window of the product.

  11.

I'm in a bit of a dilemma: I've strictly enforced my personal tank locomotive-only policy. Hmm. Large Prairie, perchance? So far, so good.....

Just think of it as a Large Prairie that has a mineral come water cart immediately behind it.
