  1. Say that to the people injured or have sustained vehicle damage as a result of the slippery rails. Yes having the rails in was a historical legacy but they were a risk in the highway, especially to cycles and motor cycles that the County highway bosses finally decided was to be alleviated by removal. Many locals are glad they are going.
  2. And/or to show your superiors it can be done with what we have BUT if the resources, be that staff, equipment or both, is reallocated to this new task what would you like us not to do from what they are currently being used for? Outcome generally some form of compromise.
  3. Deltic kits are still in the Dapol range - see https://www.Dapol.co.uk/shop/model-accessories/self-assembly-oo-kits/c009-deltic-diesel-locomotive-511
  4. Before retirement I was often asked by management to achieve something which realistically couldn’t be done with what we had available. I can easily see a scenario where a CME was asked something similar, example, more pax/freight with less trains*. That needs more vehicles per train so bigger engine needed. CME’s answer is I can get you one of these bigger engines dear directors but you will need to spend on civil engineering etc, etc., to run them. End of stupidly impractical idea or a morphing to a compromise. An outline diagram presumably wouldn’t waste much drawing office time. The alternative approach, such as with the LNER P1 and LMS Garretts found the in-traffic problems after they had built the locos. * seems to be an efficiency saving until you work it through.
  5. What does the choke do and is it needed? That may be a mis-described part that is mentioned in my first post after being stated to be a refitted capacitor in the second Model Rail article.
  6. To add to the confusion, or provide a definitive answer, here are the Hornby supplied notes on how to do it. They add the capacitor back.
  7. As a follow up to this I think a likely scenario is the station is a smallish one (as suggested by the Hogsmeade map as drawn by JKR) and the only major trains serving it are the start and end of term school specials. [Protototype Gilling for Ampleforth College]. With the recent release/announcement of several small r-t-r locos of Scottish prototypes perhaps it does become a practical option to model with a tank loco and two coaches (shuttling to/from your choice of destination) and an 0-6-0 tender loco for p/up goods services. Edit - Having viewed a clear copy of this map on line* I have spotted for the first time what looks like a mapped (Closed?) spur from the Hogsmeade branch running up and into the Forbidden Forest and passing under the T of the word Extends. Probably something JKR changed hence the swirly lines drawn for the forest but something to note. Log trains anyone like the one's that run/ran to Chirk but steam hauled? * you can skip past the reddit login to get to the map.
  8. One useful tool I bought recently from Halfords is a metal dish with super strong magnet built in as a metal screw catcher. Like the blue tack a way of stopping errant screws disappearing.
  9. As a Society magazine editor I broadly agree, a letter should be included as written provided it is not likely to result in legal actions! If it is too hot to publish a note stating additional material has been received is the best answer. Luckily in the three years I have been doing the job nothing, as yet, has approached the "I can't print that!" level although a few have been critical of either articles or the reported Society Board decisions.
  10. My routine check on the website today indicates it is running slowly. I am checking for a cause. Update 1 Testing showed that as the site was loading normally on my I-pad, but nothing like as fast on my desktop Mac, the site was OK. All updates and plug-ins were, however, then checked and updated. Update 2 Appears to be working normally now.
  11. I have several yards of heavy duty copper cable raided from skips ages ago (2 varieties, the heavier one is cooker feed standard I think). For some multiple joints I chop off a suitable length of single strand, strip it, thread it through a chocolate block at each end as appropriate then use the sticking out bit/rod as a solder tag. In the past have also used cut off bits of tinplate, screwed to the baseboard's underside with the wires soldered to it as necessary. For the latter sardine tin lids are a good source as it is flat.
  12. That is the plan that was adopted when 2020 was called off. The position remains as per our post of 5 September above.
  13. Re cookies - no problems on any of my Apple kit, Mac, MacBook and I-pad. Not opened RMWeb on the I-phone yet though. Usual browser Chrome.
  14. Why pubs are a problem. Seen this lunch time whilst on my daily walk - group of 7, no distancing. Also representing the equivalent frontage to a medium size layout, therefore why shows will be a problem.
  15. Sadly Phil age does not seem, of itself, to bring sanity and around here we also see lots of d*** heads like the bloke above who forget the nose needs to be covered too! I posted recently about the pub and shoulder to shoulder sitting, that group were not youngsters either.
  16. As another permanent resident of a touristy area, fully agree with the two posts immediately above. There is also the extra factor that if/when we do go out we have low density areas to walk in for exercise compared to many of the urban areas with high % transmission. Nearholmer mentioned air-borne transmission earlier, if that is a risk then more likely in higher footfall areas than a country footpath with only an occasional pedestrian, dog walker, rambler etc.
  17. I did email the magazine but have not yet had a direct reply, will be interested to see if it appears in a future edition in the Q & A section.
  18. Six makes sense for the simple reason it is a likely combination that can be understood:- 1 couple plus a family of four (grandparents with their family etc.) 3 couples/2 x three etc. 6 individuals. The first of the above is probably all the government really wanted to allow in the first phase of relaxation but allowing the others has crept in. The last one is probably the only contentious one where people get to mingle widely, and perhaps not always with any form of distancing. The issue becomes making it any more complex and (a) people will ignore it/fail to understand it and (b) how can anyone in authority hope to police a gathering other than by group head counts.
  19. Mixing is what passes it on so it can be blamed where people are not social distancing, masking etc. Passed our local pub yesterday, looking in I could see people were sitting at the table in compliance yes , BUT shoulder to shoulder round the table not separated at all. We are all at risk while ever people are not abiding the rules. My wife and I keep seeing people with masks on but not covering their noses, wtf! Sorry but I will be social distancing and avoiding on a voluntarily basis many of the non-essential to visit places where people mix and doing that for a long time to come.
  20. If it helps anyone, I have just seen examples of both types of the Royal Blues on the Hattons pre-owned list and remembered this post.
