  1. Marking Out now under way.
  2. Early arrivals - Saturday morning. Please watch out for runners and/or related traffic - in addition to the Car Boot Sale there is also a Park Run at 9am. Their website for details is = https://www.parkrun.org.uk/york/ Have only just found out about this, it will be now added to the travel pages as an advisory in a few minutes time.
  3. The late Mike Cook's Ashburton (Helped him operate it several times at shows). In magazines, Hursley and from further back in the past Berrow, Charminster (or was it Charmouth?) and Marthwaite. The reasons for liking the them differ but they are one's I can remember from down the years. That must be a definition of inspirational. One feature I particularly liked was the idea of a removable buffer stop/tunnel mouth to allow continuous running versus the usual end-to-end. The last idea, and no idea who drew it, but a reversing circle/fiddle yard which was on a track plan in a way-old Model Railway News. (An idea I've since seen revived by Paul A Lunn)
  4. It was and the wiring bus is now in and some of the droppers added. However, the next update/work on this project won't be until after the York Model Railway Show as have been sidetracked sorting out our SLS stand for the show. (Stand 4 - on ground floor next to the show admin/step stool hire point).
  5. Have never liked the Hornby train set controllers. Can thoroughly recommend Gaugemaster gear as a satisfied user of their controllers for many years. (No trade connection, merely an independent user)
  6. There isn't one on Apple kit, or if there is I don't know it.
  7. A down arrow as well as the up arrow. When you are scrolling backwards through a long thread looking for something recent (but off the current page) it would help. Going backwards sequentially you want to turn to the previous page foot not the top.
  8. Squires at York it will be. There all the show period, thanks for the lead.
  9. 4. Back to the chassis, make sure the bearing surfaces are clean, likewise the stub axles. I use Servisol 10 switch cleaner, which is safe on motors and plastics. It will evaporate and leave a fine conductive film on the surfaces. Tod - Are there are any physical chain stores where you can go and buy the Servisol, or does it have to be an on-line purchase? It isn't a product I've heard of, but have exactly the same J72 issue. Even the new (for use but not by purchase date) spare chassis I bought ages ago had generated the same issue whilst in storage and still in the unopened packaging! Therefore I currently have 2 chassis needing the fix. Not averse to buying on line but it is so often a faff to be having to wait in for the deliveries as unless it is the local R Mail letter-post the time slots are so random.
  10. Almost a ditto for our SLS stand header plate; eventually did get it at a subsequent York Show after email correspondence and the demand for a sign or a refund. IIRC the one we did get was made at York on the first show day! The sign is good, but I can't say the process of actually getting it delivered was good customer care or, significantly, a process likely to generate a repeat order. Updated - the above problems did occur but to be fair to the bloke (Ron?) we ordered and received one at York this year without a problem.
  11. Thanks for the above responses, they give a good guide. If going steam era (pre-1968), roller doors unlikely. Post steam a mix, with rollers on any newer buildings.
  12. There has been a late layout change; Pottendorf has had to cancel. It has been replaced by "Kitson Castle and Peckitt Pier Light Railway" / Chris Towers / 4mm 009 (period and location not specified). Hope to update the website tomorrow updated.
  13. Most old factories, goods shed facilities etc., seem to have (had) their doors either hinged or sliding. Most modern built one's have roller doors or perhaps an up and over if a smaller building or garage. Does anyone know roughly when the former stopped being commonly fitted to new build and the latter style began to be substituted? I know our house had an up and over door by the early 1970s but, even today, there are many older garages around with wooden doors. One of those things I've not really considered before but is presumably, to those who know, scenically as big a faux-pas as putting a blue diesel on a rake of PO wagons. Any guidance welcomed as I am beginning to think about the buildings to be part of the layout's backscene/end panel..
  14. Finally took a break from other activities today and have made a bit of progress on the physical build part of the layout. The track is now relaid to be DCC ready on the principle of plenty of isolated breaks (plastic fishplates) which is next to be wired with droppers. I've done it now as once the ballast is down in due course I wouldn't want to lift it to retrofit DCC options. I have also added a further point on the back-road in the fiddle yard that will enable a future extension into an L format without relaying track. Goes nowhere for now, but can. Return will be a common for the long-term. Initial control will be DC, albeit restricted to one loco at a time until I either build a section panel or commit to DCC. My plan, run wiring for each feed section separately to a common, temporary, junction point. From there the wires can either be re-spilt and section switches inserted for a long-term DC option or left as one merged input feed point suitable for either DC or DCC. I hope to get a DCC set-up at York, whether I do & which system may be price dependant Interesting observation relevant to the thread on internet - v - local shop. I discovered I was either out of plastic fishplates or couldn't find the one's I have (more likely). Quick trip to local toy/hobby store on the bus, got plenty to keep me going without waiting for postal deliveries. However, it was fortunate I didn't want the OO metal type as they'd only got them in N. Outcome, I got what I wanted with an hour's round trip and at least 24hrs before I could have got them by mail-order, but with small stores that only re-stock every few months it can be random chance that they've got what you need if it's getting close to their reorder/restock time. Hopefully, tomorrow will be the dry day as forecast so I can do the wiring outside with the layout firmly held at 90deg in the workmate.
  15. Just finished relaying my track to be DCC ready on that principle. Hopefully, tomorrow will be the dry day as forecast so I can do the wiring outside with the layout firmly held at 90deg in the workmate.
  16. Bus link confirmed as running and our webpage updated accordingly. More details, including a link fare from Leeds, here on the Transdev website. (Thanks for the link Richard H)
  17. The Advance Ticket box office now closed for 2019 Tickets. The text will be altered to be clearer later today but if you try to buy a ticket using Pay Pal it will return Out of Stock.
  18. Yes. Boosters tried on several classes, experimental powered tenders were also tried
  19. Bulleid did try - it was called Leader.
  20. Thanks for the links. Despite growing up only 3 miles away from it that wasn't a branch line I'd ever been made aware of.
  21. Yes this layout is the cusp decision for me on going DCC. Not least is that to make it dual purpose, and operable from the front or the back, will make the control panel position awkward to fit and operate from. I have to admit I am tempted to wire it for DCC/one loco only under DC initially, and then retro fit a sectioned control panel for DC later if I find it necessary for working with two DC locos. Hoping to buy my first DCC control set up at the York Show after talking to Digitrains at Ally Pally. A second layout would be great but lack of storage space likely to preclude. The only hesitation to making it DCC only now, is the number of elderly DC locos I own that may not have space to retro add chips.
  22. I built a very quick shunting inglenook layout for the Society stand intending it to be a one-feed layout with insulfrog points. Theory was the track plan was effectively an X so only needed to be power fed from the cross point. Unfortunately in practice, as the insulfrog points were unreliable because the blade connecting was intermittent, it is now being relaid and retro-fitted to mirror electrofrog points (albeit the actual crossing will still be the dead plastic frog). The outcome is that all rails leaving the V crossing need to be gapped. My query now is that I would like to have it workable as either analogue DC (several old locos) and DCC for my newer ones dependent on which controller/power supply is connected. Therefore can someone confirm that if I gap both rails at all the places where sections are needed I can have a common return on one side and switched sections to the other. I.e. All the backscene side rails are common connected (-) all the fascia side rails are individually switched (+) sections. That seems to me to satisfy the needs of either method of operation. Power connections will be before the switch panel. (Point motors separate circuit, probe and stud) When running with the DCC power connected/DC disconnected by turning every section switch to on that will be a dropper to each section. Under DC there would be a common return one side, switched feeds the other. The final query being the TV suppressor. I note Hornby put one in the DC power connections clip, but you can't have it on the DCC option. Is one actually needed as I could wire it before the connection plug on the DC controller if the answer is yes.
  23. The travel information section has now been revised and simplified for the 2019 Show and also moved from the legacy site to the current version. In addition we now provide linked options to either view a full page showing all available travel options or to load new sub-sections showing only information relevant if travelling by car or by public transport. I have already received one information request regarding the 197 bus service. To avoid a repeat of the lengthy bus link debate of previous years - the bus link is not a YMRS charter but is provided by TRANSDEV as a commercial service. Alternatives are available for the Saturday, with links from our website to the service providers' timetables and the York bus route map or alternatively, if arriving in a group, perhaps consider a taxi from the station. Car travel - on the Saturday this year please also note that as Easter is later the car boot sale is scheduled therefore Saturday parking will be on the Knavesmire not the Coach Park. Blue Badge visitor parking unchanged.
  24. Have just started validating the links and copying/converting the travel page information from the old site format to the new version. The replacement page will be live in a couple of days. Hope to see you all at the Show.
