The Journey continues........
Having built a strong soldered chassis and lower frame the plastic body becomes a very strong and solid structure once everything is in place..
.....I`m debating whether to replace the wheels with Slaters.........
Obviously the body work is now down to superglue assembly....................................
................. a lot of work still to do.....
-
Chassis is finished and the body superstructure is ready for the painting stage.
I did`nt get on with the buffer springiing units and did`nt feel the design for fitting them would be reliable in model railway running environments, so I resorted to some drastic strengthening tactics....... Milliput !!!
Now I`m on to the tender assembly................................
-
Spent a few evenings applying the last of the chassis detailing.
Decided to de-construct the chassis this week and then reassemble in the paint shop.
Fiddly work but by using Clostermann black etch primer rattle can no further coats of black is needed. I used Humbrol maskol and Tamiya masking tape for the bits escaping the paint.
Then fun with airbrushing the wheels and the final reassembly......
I fabricated a simple motor holding rig.......
And then out with the rollers......
happy with that...... You can`t get such fine control with pure DC but when she gets a Zimo sound decoder....... she`ll be a bit of a beasty !!!
The trailing radial truck has gone back into the workshop for some minor adjustments......

Most of this week has been taken up with fitting Slaters plunger pickups and motorising her.
Yesterday she took her first steps with movement on a short length of track.
She now has Slaters drivers.
Earlier in the week i fitted a very large Sagami can motor and fold up 26.1 gearing plus a large flywheel. Despite a nice quiet running gearing she was`nt quite powerful enough .
so i decided to fit a much beter quality and more expensive two stage helical 30.1 combined motor and gearbox from Premier Components. The motor is a Cannon 1833.

Slow but steady!!!
Fitting the roof to the cab needed some fettling and because it is a casting perhaps sits a bit proud of the body.... but I think it looks good.
I`ve already spent two evenings detailing the backhead and it`s still not finished!!! I used soft copper wire in place of the brass supplied.
Note the keen new fire
manfly !!!How a complete novice would manage this boggles me!!!

Things are progressing.
Having mentioned before that this is to be a soldered assembly, in reality I can`t solder mazak castings , and the cab roof is some sort of mazak and I`ve read somewhere on this forum that if you attempt to solder mazak you can quite easily alter the materials matrix and possibly bring on the dreaded `mazk rot`
I have therefore kept the laquer on all the roof etches and used a very thin, strong bonding superglue, trying to use it in the same fashion as I would with solder.
Everything seems to be very strongly bonded with minimal evidence of the glue......
Planning ahead, I will have similar issues with the Tender assembly as the main body shape is plastic, so the chassis will be soldered and much of the superstructure detailing will be superglued......

Hi Jack
Now there`s a story from the distant past......
The BR liveried Hornby 2P had a replacement comet chassis with sprung hornblocks and P4 Ultrascale wheels. but still used the Hornby brakes and sand pipes
The body had a lighter overhaul with just a change of handrails and knobs Gibson sprung buffers and fitted lamp irons .
The Hornby tender was replaced with a full comet models kit.
Then she went all dirty on me.
So i stuffed her full of sound...........
Cheers

Thanks all,
Going to do some work on the main station platform, so will come back to the shed later.
She`s bedded in on the layout but some internal detailing will be needed.

Sunday late afternoon. Difficult time with roof tile colouring....too dark to start with this morning...looked good in the sunlight but not so effective in electric lighting so repainted with lighter colours. Windows were a sod but are in now. enough for today.

Well, the dye has been cast...... the through Station is no more.......
Track work has been uprooted and a base for the engine shed is in situ......
GWR water fascilities have been carefully fettled from an old whitemetal kit......
The long awaited cattle dock at the front has been made.....
A replacement signal box, not made by me, but snapped up on ebay made by a longstanding regular seller was snapped up and is fully detailed internally and fits well at the end of what will be a new platform..
The new detailed platform will be fabricated platform in the next few weeks using 422 Model Making products....

A little more progress this week.
A dose of Clostermans grey etch primer from their quality rattle can....
Then airbrushed with a 1970`s tin of Precision GWR wagon grey.........
A recent stock of the same GWR grey is a darker shade.......

Truss rods !!!
Well it`s four from me !!!!!
Poor picture , but my vote is there is a hint of more than two truss roads here ......
...and my 1980`s O gauge RJH coach kits catered for four.......
...as does the Dapol/Lionheart RTR in O gauge......

Funny you should say that!
Only thing is, I'm not getting rid of the 4mm stuff, far from it, but there is a small collection of 7mm items gradually taking shape, a Dapol 14XX is certain to feature in due course.
Aha! Once you really start it`ll be the end of your 4mm stuff.... I sold all of mine through Ebay on those `only sell for £1` offers for a surprisingly large amount of dosh !!! and never looked back.....
...and right now you can pick up a DCC ready Dapol 57XX for less than £200 with working inside motion from Rails of Sheffield !! and I can swear that it is a railway modellers model.....
Cheers

Nice work with the replacement chassis Captain.........
....but of course later in the year Dapol will have a 7mm 48/14XX with a proper RTR chassis and if she follows the same standard as their 57XX.......
Come on sell up and go 7mm.... and get a proper RTR loco... :-)

Nice track plan and some excellent landscaping...... well done
...let see some videos of it all in action please......
John
-
Ha ha I know that.....
I`ve been looking forward to running my locos for the past 40 years and when I get close...... there`s another brass kit I fall in love with.
now I`m retired I`m a little closer...........
I learnt to solder making a Jamieson 57XX back in the late 70`s.....
but I can`t remember what happened to it !!!!!

Very very nice brass model making that knocks the spots of this 3D printing `stonework`
`Bleedin` well done....
Cheers

Thanks again Graham.
I have noticed the roof rafters Ian, but so far the kit`s accuracy might prove a problem fitting them, even though I think they would look good.
I shall be assessing the situation this evening.

Thanks Graham
The stone work has been more of a challenge on this kit, but I have become quite impressed with how resin can be worked, especially with my favourite tool `the slitting disc`
Tonight`s chapter will be the roof........
John

Thanks
Still hav`nt made the door knobs........................
....but a matching goods shed,,,,mmmmhhh
-
An interesting kit and a good basis for what you have done to improve upon it.
Will this be in addition to your excellent Halt or an addition ?
I will look forward to seeing more posts please.
Oh deary deary me.......
It might be in place of the Halt as the track plan for it would suit a GWR terminus set up.....
it will all depend on how the finished item turns out .......

Hi Peter,
The Deluxe Hornblocks are supplied by.......
http://www.hobbyholidays.co.uk
Their Standard Hornblocks are just as excellent....
Both will perform well on your WD. I`ve got the Deluxe fitted on my still unfinished Castle class
Kind regardsJohn

As the light fades around the kitchen table this evening the completed assembly of this Hatchette Mallard, built to exhibition standards , has been achieved.
There will be no further blog entrails on this project as I have moved this over to the Facebook Hatchette Mallard Build blog.
Thanks for watching
