    I remember it well.

Great photo!  I remember it well, and bought stuff from there (when I'd managed to save enough pocket money and milk round money!).

Would you have any other photos of 60's and 70's Romford street scenes or railways?  If Gazza, you wouldn't mind you posting on here?

    Cheers

How's this for your memory Vivian?

Yes, that's me in my Clarks College uniform!  Absolutely brilliant, can't thank you enough!

And above me, a poster for the very shop where I purchased my first 45rpm single with my pocket money!  Downtown Records, who also had a branch in my hometown of Brentwood.

Superb modelling - you have the barrows, railings and circular windows spot on. Even the light cream tiling in the stairwell.  I just can't believe it!

With your permission I will download your image to save on my laptop please.

I would love to see the model "in the flesh" sometime. Will you be taking it on the exhibition circuit - hopefully if they return in 2021?

Thanks again - it has really transported me back!

The Ice Cream parlour was called Como Sandwich Bar, according to chat I have just read on Flickr.  I would be interested in photos of it as well, as I need to model it.

Ah, that's right it was!  I remember it now.  Italian place I think, so that fits.

Well done for researching it further.

Happy memories of that place as the pocket money would occasionally stretch to a vanilla ice cream /  lemon sorbet treat!  Those were the days!

    Cheers.

  4. Fantastic modelling!  Absolutely brilliant actually.

Just as I remember Romford station when I used it to go to and from school in the late 60's - early 70s.

I used to sit on the mail barrows that were always by the lifts on Platform 5, just round the corner on your model!  On the way home to Shenfield I used to deliberately miss a couple of trains and sit there and do my spotting.  Then catch a Class 306 Gidea Park terminator and stop off there for a while before catching my 302 or 307  to Shenfield!  Sometimes I took hours to get home!  Mum didn't mind, she knew I was happy watching trains!   My schoolmate lived in Grays so we'd often hang about on the LT&S Upminster platform.

Your model has certainly brought back some happy memories for me!  Thanks for posting.

Oh, by the way, I can't remember the name of the Ice cream parlour under the old LT&S entrance the other side of the road from your model photo.  I'd like to know. as I can't find any old photos anywhere of that but I'd love to see any images you may have.

  5. Really like your OAA - I'm doing one myself right now.

Even simple weathering with Tamiya powders brings out the detail on the body. I hadn't even noticed the moulded chains until I started the job. Very good detail considering it's a 30 year old model. And the sides are nice and thin too. OK, the underframe is not up to "modern" standards but fair play to Hornby all those years ago.

When weathered and detailed I'm more than happy to include it in a rake with more modern Bachmann offerings.

    Thanks for the inspiration!

  6. Very many thanks for that very useful info SRman.

I've been in the process of detailing my Lima and Limby 101 front ends.  Have been at that on and off for ages.  I could never get the yellow quite right, but your info will make me have another go!  I'll be getting the ModelStrip out (yet again!) tonight!

I always painted round the inside of the widow fames in matt dark grey before r-fitting the glazing though - been doing that for years.  Time consuming, but a vast improvement on any model.

I'll be  soldering on with my Lima 101's for a while yet,  as I'm afraid I don't hold out much hope for the Bachmann blue/grey ones as already discussed on forums.  But I sincerely hope I'm wrong!

    All the best.

  7. I feel there's a market out there for decent AC electrics.

Bachmann's 85 is totally superb, but we have no readily available catenary to run it under.  Dapol's masts are lovely, but no wires available yet.

Such a shame Heljan made a b***s up of their 86.  Could have been a great seller - think of all the liveries the class has carried over the years.  Class 90's would be the same.

Come on manufacturers - give us new Class 86, 87 and 90.  You know it makes sense!  After all there are not many more D&E classes to do!!
