  1. Out of interest and slightly off topic, are you doing anything with the underframes and bogies with the disk braked Mk2Zs? I only ask as I have several coaches sat in boxes waiting for me to do a Mk2Z Edinburgh/Glasgow push and pull rake. I wonder whether I will ever get round to it, but ho hum. Thanks, Alun
  2. Thanks Andy, Even stripped of paint, no glazing and with only one apertured modified, it's obvious how much your work will improve the look of the model. Are you taking orders? Alun
  3. I've just bought a chicken coop. How did that happen?

Modelling time and modelling money! Something for the garden railway to meander around - when I've saved up again.

      Got it! Thanks.

  5. I said back in post 245 that something wasn't quite right with these models. It wasn't the vents or the sole bars, I can see that, it was the overall look of them. I've never been one for counting rivets and rarely get the measuring stick out, but the windows must be it. If each aperture is a scale 4" too narrow and too shallow, then that's a lot of inches. I know why my Airby's don't look right and it's mostly the tumble home (or turn under or whatever the correct term is). But to me, they look more like a Mk2 than the Hornby's do. It's a poor show from the same company that manufactured the beautiful Gresley and Stanier coaches. I know they're a good deal more expensive, but I would have preferred to pay the money, which is probably what I will do when the Bachmann's come out. Alun
  6. About half my collection has sold on eBay, a load more to list. Taken me years to get my hands on some of them. The boss better not change her mind about a garden railway.

Decided the best approach is to be open and honest. I won't easily hide an 18" high wall in the back garden or the cost of a live steam locomotive. It's not like sneaking a Hornby class 50 into the house when you already have a few Bachmann 47s.

I'll be asking for your help in a few months! ;-)

  7. It was called Camera Mart. I imagine it's still there, they have a branch in York. 271-273 Linthorpe Road will be forever etched into my memory.
  8. That Princess sounds familiar! Fascinating, think I've seen the 8F before, and one or 2 other pictures. The Van B looks ok and I almost commented on the bogies when I saw your photograph on Flickr. Incidentally, my first (and only?) proper job was for a camera shop on Linthorpe Road. Alun
  9. The Airby Mk2Ds look fine with Bachmann Mk1s though. The buffers don't quite match up, but bearing in mind all the other discrepancies, I'll sleep at night! A BG and an RU is what mine will be running with until the Bachmann version comes along. Alun
  10. Hello, I had presumed 'headgeaf' was after a Hornby one to match his other vehicles. We're not all demons with an airbrush! Alun
  11. Hi, I was certainly given the impression by Hornby that all development on the ex-Airfix Mk2s had ceased. The Hattons website is a treasure trove of past, present and even never released products, and it does say "Withdrawn from 2012 range". However, the model is also still on the Hornby website, but it was due in the shops December 2012 - two years ago. I would like one too, but I won't be holding my breath, Alun
  12. Indeed, there is a link to it on page 1 of this thread! Alun
  13. Well, they will be a good deal cheaper than the Bachmann's, but how many people in the RailRoad target market want a rake of blue/grey coaches? I mean, if you buy the Limby Deltic, are you really going to care that the coaches have 100mph bogies, train air brakes and ETH? I've never read an autopsy on the Hornby Mk1s, having made a significant investment in the Bachmann's, it wasn't relevant to me. Are they similarly flawed? They at least look the part at my local model shop. NPCCS aside, the only Hornby coach (other than Airfix origin) in my collection is the Gresley buffet. Lovely looking vehicle, but it is wrong too. The eBay market for Airby Mk2s isn't saturated yet, so it's not just me that's hanging onto them. It impresses me no end what the likes of Flood, Brian and Bob are capable of, but I would rather spend 35 quid on a model that looks like what it is supposed to than £25 on one that doesn't, particularly when I have something that will do the job already. Alun
  14. What I do know is that Hornby rushed the Mk2Es out, not that it should be an excuse. A very big bird (well a bloke actually) told me at the Ebor show last Easter that they intended to beat Bachmann to market. He also said they would be a good product. That's why Hornby never released some of their Mk2D variants, the blue/grey BSO springs to mind. While I can't comment on the specifics as well as some, the Hornby Mk2Es don't look quite right to me. My Airby ones don't look quite right either. So why spend my money? I'll wait and see if the Bachmann ones are worth the upgrade, that they should match my Mk2As will probably be the decider. Alun
  15. Quite! Bachmann aren't averse to footwear malfunctions, roughly half of my Mk1s have had bogie swaps, and if a B4 is close enough to a B5, then friction dampers might be close enough to hydraulic. I'm surprised I missed the dampers until Mick's post, I had a look to see whether Temperature or Stones fans had been replicated then moved on to watching what Brian, et al, were doing with the shells and sole bars. Scale wise, it's not my main area of interest any more, and having been blessed with 10 thumbs and no fingers, I will be keeping my Airby Mk2Ds for now. Alun
  16. Hi Mick, I might have got this completely wrong, but as built, wasn't it just Mk2Fs that had B4s with hydraulic dampers? Obviously a good number were retrofitted later. Handy if you have a thing for air cons wearing Network Rail yellow! Alun
  17. Hi, I've been following the thread with interest, but the above is a bit over simplistic. It was train air brakes and in most cases ETH and 100mph footwear that were important. I can't claim to be an expert with other regions (or any region), but Mk2Ds and Mk2Fs were mixed up on the ECML. Also, it wasn't unusual to see 2 catering cars (for example, an RB adjacent to 2nd class and an RU adjacent to 1st class) or an RB or RKB with a Mk1 RUO. Further, there are plenty of pictures around with more than 1 BG, and although there was clearly an effort to keep aircon stock together, an earlier Mk2 BSO, BFK, TSO or FK was often seen in an otherwise aircon rake. Deltics and Generator class 47s couldn't power the motor alternator sets on Mk2Es, but they were used on the ER, interregional trains from circa 1980 with 45/1s, class 47/4 conversions and class 50s. All the best, Alun *** EDIT - I see the typos after I hit the post button! ***

We're doing it! A new 4mm trainset for my son is the project leading up to Christmas then start in the garden in the New Year. Been promising me (us?) a garden railway for years, now we have some space.

  19. Very nice, been a while since I've seen it, not sure whether I noticed the double arrows or not! The Scarborough and Whitby Railway would be sustainable these days, hindsight and all that. I do intend to walk the line sometime, but I've been saying it for a few years. Alun *** EDIT - a typo, as per ***
  20. Hi, Different Alun, I was the one that posted about 107s in the "other" thread. Subscribing to this out of interest, not sure I will be able to contribute very much, and also I want to see what happens with this project of yours - will be quite remarkable. For now, I'm sure you've seen the disused stations entry for West Cliff (with a fine picture of an early 3 car 101) and the other stations on what became the Teesside to Whitby line. Also a 104 and a later 101 at Guisborough, and possibly my favourite place on earth, here and here for 108s and another later 101 at Robin Hoods Bay. Is this the class 03 on a demolition train? Good luck, Alun

Thanks for the kind words, still no Internet, just having a sneaky catch up at work!

  22. Thanks Ray. I have a habit of being exhausted at around 7pm when my youngest goes to bed, then wide awake from midnight. As a cure for insomnia, I recommend finding a photograph with something not quite right about it and getting the WTTs out. Alun
  23. Hi Mike, I have access to the WTTs for 12th September 1960 through 11th June 1961 and 17th June 1963 through 8th September 1963; "that photograph" being dated May 1962, if indeed the month and year are accurate, but it looks about right! Both WTTs do indeed show 8 car rakes. The down train being Second Brake / Second Kitchen (Friday) or First Parlour (rest of the week) / First Kitchen / Second Bar-Kitchen / First Kitchen / First Kitchen (1960/61) or First Parlour (1963) / Second Kitchen / Second Brake. We are broadly in agreement other than you appear to have listed the formation for the Friday only service. Therefore, the rake does look consistent to me (on a Monday to Thursday) with the BG and Second Kitchen being used instead of a Second Brake and the all steel First Kitchen being a like for like replacement. I'm afraid my lack of skills doesn't allow me to identify the type of vehicle from the 5th coach onwards (other than those in clear sight are Metro-Camms), and the 5th looks like it might be a Kitchen or Bar Car, again consistent with the WTTs. Although I think I can see a 9th vehicle under Holgate Bridge, I can't see a 10th. Alun *** EDIT - the post I replied to appears to have been deleted so apologies if it is out of context ***
  24. On the ECML there were 4 1928 brake seconds and a further 8 converted from kitchen seconds to work with the Metro-Camms, but built in 1928 AND 1931. The non-brake all steel vehicles remaining in use on the ECML were 4 kitchen firsts, a parlour second and a parlour first. Some brake seconds survived until 1966/67.
