  1. Looks like we might get more duplication then as the Little Loco Co have announced on the Gauge O Guild Forum that they will also produce a Brake Van - after the Ruston loco (due in Summer from a British factory !!) and an mystery Type 2 loco. .
  2. My wife was due to attend Jury Service last year but in the end her attendance was cancelled as they were over subscribed and had far too many booked to attend for the cases available. I asked a Magistrate I know for any hints or tips - the response was 'Remember everyone lies in Court, even the Police' and 'Go with your gut instinct and first impressions' . . . . . . . . ! .
  3. Now that the Nottingham show is over, it's time to start increasing the publicity for the other big show in the East Midlands . . . . . . . . . . Note that this flyer was produced some time ago and there are a couple of changes to the layouts and traders listed. A full list will be published here when available .
  4. About 15 years ago, I visited a partnership office in real Tel Aviv and was there for Purim. The staff were in fancy dress but when I asked why, I was told by one young lady that she had no idea why they dressed up - she actually said 'I may be Jewish but I'm not religious' - so what did she learn at school then ? .
  5. I have now seen that Paul has posted a comprehensive reply to the same question on the Narrow Gauge Railway Modelling Online Forum which I have copied below for the benefit of those who are not yet registered on NGRM which is a closed forum for members only. .
  6. See EDM Models for sound - recorded last year. See the bottom of this page http://www.ngtrains.com/Pages/ZIMO/zimo.html .
  7. Yes - sold with either 16.5mm or 14mm wheel sets - see here at EDM Models http://www.ngtrains.com/Pages/SLP/slaters.html .
  8. Somewhere in the archive in my loft is a letter from the Inland Revenue confirming that if we changed our Club Rules to say that visitors to our exhibition were classed as 'Day Members' of the club then we would not be liable for any tax on the profit we made from organising the show. Other clubs had similar arrangements and some even advertised their admission fee as being a payment for day membership and printed this on the admission ticket. You don't seem to see this as much as before (this was about 25 years ago) but we still have that clause in our constitution and don't pay tax. Now it seems more shows are being organised by limited companies set up by clubs to limit their liability. Sorry to go off topic but it is relevant to the comments above about sales to members. VAT is a completely separate matter based on turnover. .
  9. Thanks Peter - very clear and understood - as for Derby, it's still organised by the Club and so as you say the Committee bears the full responsibility and liability. It was a long time ago that one of our previous exhibition managers was convinced that there must have been a lot of profit from York going somewhere - perhaps it's because soon after he started the Derby show he got a letter from the Inland Revenue asking how much he had been paid to run the show and why he hadn't declared it on his tax return (they got his details as he was named in a photo of the official opening in the local paper). When he told them how it worked, I then got a letter asking for copies of our accounts and we were taxed on the interest we received - a few years later they gave up asking as the amounts were so insignificant! However this whole episode did result in contact with Mike Cook who explained where the (occasional) surplus went. The point I was trying to make (rather badly) was that in a few years time the little shows from DD (the original subject of this topic) could be as successful and popular as York - from small acorns . . . . . ! As for a Not for Profit Company, this is something we may need to consider as our clubrooms are in danger of collapse and we need to investigate some serious repairs or even replacement and the need to raise funds. Some in the club think that by becoming a charity we can get it all paid for by grants - but who from and why should they support us ! Mike .
  10. Oh good - looking forward to seeing this layout at our show at The Roundhouse - after all our Mickleover clubrooms are only about a mile down Station Road from the area you have modelled - and which many of our members know so well. Mike and the rest of MMRG .
  11. History. I had no idea what we teach here at Derby so I thought I had better check. Details here (open the folder 'What you will cover') http://www.derby.ac.uk/history-courses/history-ba-hons/ some examples below to show the range of subjects covered Renaissance and Enlightenment: Europe, 1453-1789 Behind Closed Doors: Gender and Sex, 1685-1870 France: Conflict and Society, 1940-1962 Yugoslavia and After: 1980 to the present Not much about the Roman Empire or the Dark Ages . . . . ! .
  12. One of our junior members completely redesigned and then built a large control panel for the Club O Gauge layout as part of his O level project and then used the school's laser cutter to mark out the track plan and cut the holes for the section switches etc - most impressive and it got him top marks ! .
  13. The York show has been mentioned a couple of times in previous postings - this isn't a 'Club' show and so should it be classed as 'Commercial'? I believe that it was at one time organised by 'The Friends of York Model Railway Show' but now they have created a Limited Company. Local Clubs support the event such as Ebor (the model railway club in York) and Hull (home club of some of the organising team) and so I guess they benefit from some of the income and I believe the rest is reinvested into the next show - and it's been like this for over 50 years. I know that many years ago, our then Exhibition Manager (now long gone) contacted Mike Cook about where the income went as he felt that it was a commercial show and was detrimental to his own efforts here in Derby! I have visited and exhibited at York Show and would be more than happy to do so again. The point I am trying to make here is that this was probably started off in the same way as the DD shows - one person or a small group organising a show and putting the surplus back into the hobby by organising more shows - York is one big show each year and DD has lots of small shows across a number of venues - but they are both promoting railway modelling. .
  14. Remember you have only seen the opinion of a very small number of around 3000 visitors . . . . . . . Please don't worry too much about the parking although I have to admit that like many venues this is out of our control and managed by the College. We intend to increase the signage this year and direct visitors to the College car park where there will be a £2 charge. They provide stewards who will if necessary direct you to alternative parking. If this is at another College site nearby then the charge will be the same. There is also a large public pay and display site which I think is £5 and the Station car park which is £7.50. Of course being next to the Station makes it so much easier to travel by train but we appreciate that this isn't possible for many of our visitors. The whole Pride Park area should be less busy than last year as Derby County are away at Rotherham on the Sunday . . . . . . .
  15. Derby Model Railway Exhibition 2017 Mickleover Model Railway Group is proud to announce it will be holding its 37th annual Derby model railway exhibition on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th May at The Roundhouse, Derby. Bringing together a wide selection of high quality layouts and exhibits from across the country, they will cover British, European and American outline in a variety of scales. The show is once again being held in the former North Midland Railway locomotive workshops. Built in 1839, it is currently Grade II* listed and is the oldest surviving railway roundhouse in the world. Now part of Derby College, the building has been fully restored and is a modern events venue. This means the exhibition is held in a true railway location! Situated adjacent to Derby railway station, The Roundhouse is easily accessible by public transport or car, full directions and maps are on the club’s newly redesigned website. This will be the third exhibition the Group has held at The Roundhouse and it is now very much the home of the Derby show. Due to the success of the previous events, it is very pleasing to be able to announce that this year’s exhibition has been enlarged with the expansion in to a third area at the venue. This means the whole of the available facility is now being used for the Derby Model Railway Exhibition and will be filled with (model) railways in a railway venue! The exhibition’s details are: Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th May. Open 10.00am to 5.00pm Saturday, 10.00am to 4.30pm Sunday Admission: Adults: £7, Under 14s: Free (when accompanied by a paying adult) The Roundhouse, Roundhouse Road, Pride Park, Derby, DE24 8JE. Parking onsite for visitors. Further details in our regular updates
  16. I hope we don't get photos !! My wife loves watching the TV programmes which show operations in progress for all sorts of medical procedures but I have to leave the room . . . . .!! Hope all goes well. .
  17. http://www.milltownmodelrailway.com/ A very detailed website which is what many of the previous posters have been asking for Modellers tool kit and an Oxford Diecast Jaguar and an Austin 7 van with subscriptions - pay £2 per issue extra to get the two Bachmann locos ( so that's an extra £240 ) I wonder who the authors are and if they are all fresh articles (or recycled from the Model Village magazine ? ) Edit Missed out the van ! .
  18. Phil Parker has reviewed this book on his 'workbench blog' here http://philsworkbench.blogspot.co.uk/2017/01/book-review-creating-cameo-layouts-by.html .
  19. A couple of mentions there for Donington - did anyone catch the news recently that Kevin Wheatcroft has signed a deal with Jonathan Palmer and his MSV company for them to run the circuit for 21 years. I didn't realise that they already own Brands, Oulton Park, Snetterton and Cadwell ! In the many recent press reports about BRDC wanting to pull out of F1 at Silverstone, didn't I read something about Bernie saying he had already had talks about an alternative venue . . . .? Details of the MSV deal here http://www.donington-park.co.uk/news/msv-acquires-donington-park/ .
  20. Update on the dirty protest outside Derby Crown Court - he claims to have lost £5 million . . . . . . . although I note the report says some were personal cases that went against him which I suppose is a chance you take when both parties believe they are right http://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/derby-court-mud-protester-lost-5million-in-nightmare-legal-cases/story-30068362-detail/story.html .
  21. Hospitals. Summer of 1927 my new born father was taken from Grantham to St Thomas' Hospital on the South Bank of the Thames opposite Westminster for an operation that we believe was very rare at the time to clear a blockage in the stomach/bowel area that was life threatening. Apparently this is now a routine operation at any hospital and much more common that you might think. My Grandmother (who I never met) went with him and was cared for by the Salvation Army who always get a small donation each Christmas. Dad's 90 this year. .
  22. Try the BBC instead http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-derbyshire-38649366 The evening paper must have updated their story on a different link http://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/legal-system-target-of-derby-dad-charles-hirons-s-dirty-protest-with-muck-spreader-in-morledge/story-30065811-detail/story.html This is one for Ivan to look into - it's all about the collapse of the legal firm Walter Scott and Ross shut down by SRA in 2009 EDIT another link to the dispute behind the protest http://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/shutdown-ilkeston-solicitors-firm-left-legal/story-16291739-detail/story.html .
  23. I seem to recall finding out about the Bachmann On30 two car Railbus back in 2008 on Bachmann's own 'Ask the Bachmann' forum on their USA site. This was because someone had bought one from a shop in Japan where it had been released too early and the main supply was still in a container heading for the States. To start with the official line was that it was nothing to do with them but the original poster had photos of the box and the underside of the model where it quite clearly had the manufacturer's name. Next day the forum administrator admitted it was a Bachmann model but none of the staff knew about it apart from the design team and senior management. http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/board/index.php?action=printpage;topic=6004.0 .
