Ultrascale do replacement brass final drive gears (axle gears) for the Heljan OO railbuses - I used them on my W&M railbus, to very good effect.  See:

    https://www.ultrascale.uk/eshop/products/view/CAT015/557

If you ask nicely, they also do the idler/intermediate gears in brass too.  The idlers weren't shown on the Ultrascale website at the time and, knowing Gaugemaster had zero stock of any of the railbus gears at the time I wanted them, I went into a flat spin when I realised that I needed to replace an idler gear that had lost a couple of teeth as well as the split final drive gear.  I contacted David at Ultrascale to see if he could make a replacement for the idler if I sent him a sample, to which he replied that actually he had the idlers in stock but hadn't got around to putting them on the website yet.  Result!  My railbus now has brass idlers and final drive gears and, while it's marginally noisier in my opinion, the noise level is very acceptable and the railbus runs as smoothly as it would have done before the gear problems.  The noise may reduce even further with more running, but I'm not bothered if it doesn't because it really isn't an issue anyway.

Fitting a brass idler gear is no problem, since it should have a small clearance fit on its shaft and is supplied with the shaft anyway (at least, mine were).  The brass final drive gear requires a method of fixing it very securely to the axle, since it can be pushed on to the axle merely by hand (quite tightly, but not tightly enough).  There are several methods you could use of varying degrees of integrity, one of the simplest being to file a small flat on the axle and use a tiny bead of Araldite to secure the gear over the flat.  It's worked fine for me.

Oh, I nearly forgot: once ordered, the gears arrived within a couple of weeks.  I can't remember exactly how long it was, but it really wasn't long - and, to be honest, it was a pleasingly small time when you consider that before contacting Ultrascale I'd been facing a situation of no genuine Heljan nylon gears being available from Gaugemaster (or Howes, the previous Heljan spares supplier) and no indication of when they might become available again.

looks like I’ll be giving them a call so I can my railbus working, any chance of a few pictures of the new gears in the model?

  2. Hi all,

I’ve just got my railbus out for a run, I’m sure when I brought it run fine. I’ve just been on Olivia trains and it say the second hand ones have been fitted with new cogs. When was this announced? Looks like I need new cogs?

superb, noticed some sites have 9702 now unavailable for pre order so already seems to be selling well, hopefully this will encourage Bachmann to do another network rail one with the narrow center window as seen on 9701,9708 and 9714

There would be more tooling to be done, to add a fuel tank or the SGT equipment. Which I beginner modeller could add themselves.

  4. Just ordered 800201, should be here Saturday! I seem to remember the number while working with GBRF doing the testing and commissioning runs!

just now need a lengthy cabinet to display it!

When converted in 1969 it was designed to be propelled by classes 33/1; 73; 74 and all powered 1951/1957/1964 type EP braked EMU's.

As far as I'm aware any other types of locomotive could be used to haul it, including 33/0 and 33/2's . If any body knows more details please enlighten me.

    Keith

In its original state the multi working was only the ones you have mentioned, 33/0 or 33/2 don’t have a west code valve fitted, they are only blue star or 27 way multi.

Changing the CV's is the easy bit if you know what to change them too.

I would be very reluctant to open up the model as at £285 and being so perfect is would be a crime to risk spoiling it.

I think it is a forlorn hope that the LEDs will be dual colour and that you are right about a rewire/LED change.

If it were relatively simple an exercise that someone had posted on YouTube I might think about it but I assume that it will be more in depth than that.

A slight shame but nothing I cannot live with on this gorgeous model.

maybe something that Keith and the team can shed some light on.......... sorry I don’t do jokes, even so the model is great all the same!

I'm pretty certain that they were - BR woulddn't have let it run on their tracks with additional headlights which could be mistaken for headcodes.

    John Isherwood.

I don’t think that’s true, non of the mainline diesels had additional lighting, headcode panel and taillights only. BR Decided to fit an extra high-intensity light in the late 80s yearly 90s. Not really sure why? I think it was to do with trackside workers being able to see a train well before it was close to them.

Horrible suspicion that they might actually be tail lights on the real one.

Care to pop the body off for us to have a look at internal wiring ?.

( How brave are you on your new model LOL)

Not right now, I have no modelling room! Plus I’ve only just got it and don’t want to waste £250 ;-)

  9. Well Done KR Models. It a really Beautiful model. There’s only 2 little criticism not sure if it be mentioned but the springs to Axleboxes on the tender there is a big gap. Also the lights below the headcode disc is there a way to turn it off? Part from that I’m really happy with it, I brought the Sound Version and runs smooth. I’m just sorting my garage to make room for a model railway.

  10. Shall we looks at the positives rather than negatives? I think in this current climate we need to be more positive. In Business people do make mistakes as long as you put you hand up and acknowledge what you done?

it’s a brave thing to make a model that there isn’t much info, from what I can see it look really good. I can’t wait for my to arrive either Royal Mail or Courier.

I’ve paid for the Fell,  nearly paid off the Consett wagons! I do wish every success with KR Models, just keep talking to you customers!

  11. I’ve just moved house before Xmas, want to buy a class 37 and another pack of HOP wagons! Than there’s the 21ton mineral wagon and now this! Plus I’ve got to find the money to do the model railway room in the garage! Well done AS!

Now where’s the steam engine to go with these Pre TOPS wagons
