used in a similar way to front lights on the previous steam loco hauled train services to denote the type of train when the loco is not fitted with a headcode display, for example on the bigger loco's there was a black & white display to show the train code such as 1A45, these displays are no longer used in UK but the 4 digit code is used on control room/signal box route boards. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Train_reporting_number

I wasn't sure if you had tried hardboard/masonite, but thought it was worth the suggestion, the hill now has a purpose on the layout, if you need any Cornish photo's for reference just shout.

cracking engine house ruin, just like those near me, a suggestion for the backscene board to avoid joints, a sheet of hardboard bent to curve around might work.

546 & 711 looks fantastic, the side on shot of 546 in the cutting could be mistaken for the rear thing. -

like the 'new' shunter, the Pressed Steel car body factory in Swindon had 6 which look similar, IIRC they were Fowler diesels, the factory now does body pressing for the BMW Mini rahge, not sure if the shunters are still working. just found this ------- some have a new home not far from their original place of work, http://www.swindon-cricklade-railway.org/pix2.php#top the 5th photo on the link.
