  8. Afternoon all... Not sure if this is considered bad form but here is a link to a few bits I’ve listed on eBay that might be of interest to some. https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/chris.diy/m.html?item=232672254943&ssPageName=STRK%3AMESELX%3AIT&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562 These are all things I either have duplicates of or in reality I’m never going to build. If anyone is unhappy I’ll remove the link. Cheers Chris
  9. Evening.... Here is the Q1 laid out in its current sub assemblies. Both the smoke box & boiler have a turned slug of mild steel to act as ballast for the loco. To even out the balance of weight over the four axles the tender will be weighted & hang on the drawbar of the loco. The firebox is currently just a shell but once I trial fit the motor & gear box assembly i'll be able to see what if any available space there is in there for some more ballast. The smokebox, 2x discs (that give the step down from smokebox to boiler) boiler & firebox all bolt to one another through their end profile formers using 10BA bolts into captive 10BA nuts in the corresponding part. This assembly then bolts to the to the front cab sheet again using two 10BA bolts & captain nuts with a thin half etch sheet giving the rivet detail around the cab sheet/firebox joint (this component will for final assembly be soldered to the front cab sheet). The other fixing is the underside of the smokebox another captive 10BA nut to accept a bolt through the chassis & running plate. In my last session at the bench i was able to cure a tight spot in the chassis. I had been putting this down to having not fully quartered the wheels but after spending an un-reasonable amount of time trying to rectify the tight spot via altering the quartering & getting nowhere I decided to go back to basics. I reamed out all the horn blocks/bearings with an 1/8' reamer & polished up all the bearing faces & ensured a good fit on all the horn blocks & horn guides. The rods, crank pins & bushes had already received this treatment during 'Quartering Gate' earlier that evening. I'm happy to report that after this the chassis is running very sweetly with no tight spot to speak of. Other things that has been done is the brake cylinders & the arrangements between them & the pull rods (since taking the photo the soldering has been cleaned up). Regards actual progress on the Q1 the back head assembly is where i'm up to. Nine layers of nickel silver stacked on to one another with alignment rods of 0.5mm wire in place & a couple of clips holding it all together generous amounts of solder was applied around the edges sweating he whole thing together. The lower layers have various cuts outs to allow for the bolt heads fixing the firebox to the cab front. Cheers for now... Chris
  10. Wow(!), nothing since October!!! My apologies to anyone who has been following progress of the Q1 build. Since my last post the Q1 has come on quite a bit despite no modelling having been done since late November. Tonight I was able to get back in the saddle & continue with the Q1 although if I'm honest most of the evening was spent sorting out the bench, catching up with where I left off & generally re-establishing myself with it all. Tomorrow i'll hopefully make some real progress. Here it is currently... Well the photo was taken a while ago but I don't think its changed since taking it. I'll take some more pics tomorrow & try to back track a little showing whats been done. Cheers for now..... Chris
  11. Evening.. It's fantastic to see new kits being produced & brought to market. Being part of the Clayton team I've be fortunate to witness some of the development of the LNER Q2 designed by Frank & it really is a great looking kit. Please follow the link below for a little more info regards the Q2 & a photo showing the assembled test build still in the unpainted raw built by Frank Davies. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/125725-clayton/?p=2835177 I'm currently mid way through the test build for the Q1 also designed by Frank. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/88522-chris-gnr-workbench/?p=2770450 Cheers Chris
  12. Evening. Possibly a bit late in the day but here is a link to my build of the SEF N5. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/88522-chris-gnr-workbench/page-1 Keep up the good work. Cheers Chris
  13. Evening all... After a few weeks of suffering the effects of an extremely poor modelling mojo & for some unknown reason finding it hard to even want to turn the soldering iron on today i've been back at the bench. While demoing at EM north in September I got the running plate for the Q1 started & that was the last bit of modelling I had done but this afternoon has seen me continue with the Q1, yay!!! The drag box overlays, valance overlays, sandbox lids & splashers have been fitted. While rolling to shape & then dry run fitting the splashers it appeared that they wouldn't fit, them being to long. The kit intends them to sit nicely into a recess at either end of the splasher but once i'd rolled them to the correct radius they sat to high on the running plate leaving a gap between its self & the splasher front. This being a test build I was initially concerned these may have been etched over length but by rubbing the once rolled splashers over some medium grade emery paper to put a flat on the ends of the splashers this allows them to sit really nicely in place matching the splasher front perfectly. Happy to have spent a bit of time at the bench today & fingers crossed i'll get some more done over the weekend. Cheers Chris
  14. Evening. After a couple of weeks off from most things model railways this evening has seen me make a start on laying the final stretch of the scenic track on Clayton, about a 1M of double track. Starting with the laying of sleepers following a centre line drawn on the track bed, this made easy using the flexi templates designed by Frank. Next will be the final bit of ballasting (yay!!!) & then the fitting of the rail. Some of the team have dropped back into woodwork mode as work on the fiddle yard boards begins. Also templates have been made for the station platforms so work on these can start. Cheers Chris
