  1. From my Co-Bo World website....

    Paul Harrison writes,

I have researched the history of the ICI hopper wagons including a short section on the Class 28s; Trials using a pair of Metro-Vick Co-Bos (later class 28) were conducted in May 1963 and they demonstrated superior braking power to the EE Class 40s which were also being assessed as replacement for the 8F steam locomotives. These trials on the 21st - 23rd May used D5711/D5714 in multiple hauling 19 wagons on the third day.

The Class 40, thought to be D228 had suffered damage to the wheel tyres and brake linings and hauled a maximum of 16 wagons. Tests with 19 wagons were scheduled for the class 40s but were cancelled due to the damage sustained. Further trials took place in June when D5700 which hauled a 19 wagon test train unaided for four days in a row.

Full scale introduction of these locomotives never took place, the final trials taking place in March 1964. The main problem was maintaining sufficient brake-force on the descent to Cheadle Heath despite the Co-Bos having good haulage abilities. The plan was to transfer 8 of the class to Trafford Park shed on a permanent basis.

  2. Nice map but the Birmingham to Glasgow Condor was never worked by the Metrovicks, they were confined to the Hendon to Glasgow Gushetfaulds Condor.

Has there been any documentary evidence of the D6100s working the Glasgow to Birmingham service - I have to admit I am sceptical.

  3. Thanks mate.

The DMU is secondhand, and came without the detail packs. Photographs of real Derby Lightweights show that the front buffer beam is very full of vacuum pipes, air pipes and wires, whereas the model looks a bit bare at the moment.

I don't know whether there is a third-party detail pack available, or whether to have a go at scratchbuilding it all.

    Al.

    Hi Al,

Check this blog - it's a Cravens DMU but the buffer beam detail will be a similar task. I have to say I like the look of the magnteic hose connectors !

  4. Did the Midland lines out of St. Pancras use mainly 2E or 2Fs please, anyone ?
To a non-rivet counter, the Hornby ones look good but my Mk2A PVs are Bachmann and I prefer some uniformity of finish.

    Thanks

  5. Actually the train was standing still at the time.

To prove it here's a pic I took from the cab of the guys taking that pic.

Was this picture of British Transport Films personnel - who also took this splendid view near Duffield....

(Note the laying of the concrete slab trackbed - PACT - on the Up slow line).

  6. My Maroon Inspection Saloon arrived the other day, this is only the 2nd 'passenger' vehicle I have on my laout, but I think it looks superb. It is a very, very, free runner.

so following how others had modified their's I did similar - thanks for the info and inspiration...

So here is mine, with 'crew', inspecting a section of my C&HPR/LNWR themed layout, being propelled by trusty NLR 0-6-0, 68850

Is this how it got there :-)

  7. My example runs poorly but I've only tried it on a straight test track (no curves or points yet).

It ran fine out of the box but after a few short minutes it ground to a halt. Vigorous pushing too and fro 2 or 3 times gets it going again - for a while.

What I don't get is the talk of pick-up mods. The lights on mine are always on so surely current collection from the wheels isn't the issue, just the motor ???

    Confused...

    :scratchhead: :scratchhead: :scratchhead:

  8. I remember the 40s being really loud. By the way I remember the class 50s being even louder at a station stop. I saw one recently on the Mid Hants and it seemed really quiet! Either I have gone deaf or maybe it was the original "hoover" equipment that was loud. Did that get removed?

As good a Class 50 sound as you can get...
