      It's a wee bit more complicated than that, for exact reasons that I don't remember (or, more likely, never understood in the first place.)

       

      A leap year is any year evenly divisible by 4. Unless it's also evenly divisible by 100. Unless it's also evenly divisible by 400.

       

      So 2012 was a leap year. But 1900 wasn't. But 2000 was.
