    Me again

I have a few more photos that I thought I would add to my blog. I have now painted all the track on the board I have been working on recently, added some static grass, plus ballasted the track (the ballast was still wet when I took the photos.

Oh, and I have made a start on the first of many, many trees!

    Hello.

Modelling wise 2012 has been a strange year for me. Throughout the year I have moved away from my layout Highclere and spent quite a bit of time 'playing' around with new technologies to me like etching and 3D printing. This has meant that over 2012 I havent really had that much to show for myself, my occasional blog entries have been a bit random and sometimes without meaning. Highclere has taken the hit and I havent really doe much work on it this year with the only notible progress being the fiddle yard which was completed just in time for the Abingdon Show in March of 2012. I will be honest now and say that enthusiasm for the layout has dropped over 2012.

Fotunately my faith in modelling has been helped by the fact I am now Products Officer for the 2mm Scale Association and as a resuly I have been working on a few ideas for the Association.

So, I now am looking towards 2013 and my mind is now thinking about where I am heading and what I want to achieve. Here are some of my thoughts...

    1. Carry on with Highclere and hope that my enthusiasm returns. I would love to see the layout finished but its becomming more obvious its a long term project, a much longer term project than I thought when I started it years back. In 2013 the layout currently has two outings in May and June.

    2. Continue with the experiments with etching and 3D printing. I enjoy this but I know that it almost always ends in unfinished projects and disjointed bits and pieces as my mind and thoughts jump from one thing to another. I still have alot of ideas and thoughts concerning these technologies that I woild like to try out.

    3. I could shelve Highclere for a year (or two) and have a go at a smaller layout, something that is a little more manageable and something that can be built in a much smaller timescale. This of course opens up the potential problem of having another unfinished layout, compounding the problem with Highclere.

As you can see I am struggling a little with direction right now, the result in 2012 has been a lack of finishing any projects and loosing lots of confidence in my abilities. I would like more than anything in 2013 to change this but I really do need to get some direction and more importantly stick to it.

2mm Scale on RMWeb continues to grow and now there are some VERY interesting threads and blogs from prople with some great 2mm content, fingers crossed that in 2013 I do not continue to let the side down...

Your thoughts and ideas on my waffling about would be very gratefully recieved....

    Hello

Im sitting here tired but happy. The layout is safely back and unpacked from the short trip from Oxford and my mind is still buzzing from the show.

For me the 2mm Expo show was amazing. I know it was a very specialised show and alot of people not really intersted in 2mm FS would find it a tad boring but so far this year it was definately the highlight in my modelling calander. The members of the 2mm SA are so friendly and welcoming and it was fantastic to spend time and talk to so many people new and old this weekend.

I was glad to bring Highclere too and not all for the good, it was certianly a steep learning curve for myself and I have come away from the show having learnt a few valuble lessons. Everyone I spoke to said the layout looked great which was very encouraging but it also showed that its so important to get the track immaculate. On Saturday I was having 'issues' with the running on the layout which was really frustrating, so much so that at the end of the day I could have so easily dumped the layout in a skip! Fortunately I spent most of the day talking to people so I didnt really have much time to dwell on things. Sunday ended up being lots better, the track was given a good clean with a rag soaked with IPA instead of a rub with some fine emery and this totally transformed the running of the layout. There are still a few minor problems with the track but they are simple fixes but I have decided to have a break from the layout now for a coulple of months and concentrate of a few bits of rolling stock I have been itching to make.

I dont have many photos from the show but below are a couple...

If anyone else has any then please let me know, post them below, or send them to me.

Finally a BIG thank you to Gina and Martin for helping me out this weekend and of course Mike and all the other organisers of the show.

    Hello

Ever since I posted in a past blog entry about a possible new gearbox I have been working on I have had quite a few people asking me about it as they are very interested which gave me the incentive to get it done. The idea I had was to get one together and take it to the St Albans show (which I really enjoyed btw) so people could see it finished. Unfortunately things didnt work out how I would have liked so I didnt get round to finishing it...UNTIL TODAY!

OK, for those of you who dont know this is my first attempt at making a 'universal' gearbox that I could use on different engines, it came about as I was drawing up an engine for chassis for etching and I thought to myself "I could make this removeable and use it on other engines". It comprises of an etched frame, the new motor from the 2mmSA shop (3-257), and gears from my favorite gear supplier Mikroantriebe (https://www.shop.kkpmo.com/). Amazingly I have managed to get an impressive 128:1 ratio which would suit a shunting engine a treat! The drawing below shows the dimensions of the gearbox...

It uses all plastic gears so it is a bit on the quiet side, and if put together well it runs very smoothly (and slowly!). The motor is double ended so there is also the possibility of fitting a flywheel if I wanted to(and if there is room!). Here are a couple of photos of my first attempt at building one...

Of course there is a down side, because of the gears I used to get the ratio it unfortunately means the wheel axle can only be upto 1.5mm in diameter which therefore means I will have to use a solid wheel axle and insulate the wheels with a plastic bush but I feel thats a small price to pay for something like this.

Its my first attempt so I would love to hear any thoughts or comments on this...

    Hello

Well, that is the question going through my head today. Its something that has been bugging me for quite a while now. I really wanted to do point rodding on Highclere and the stools were kinda like the 'missing link'. I managed to persuade Ivan of Southwark Bridge Models to reduce an etch of his point rodding stools down to 2mm scale and as they arrived today through the post I couldnt wait to have a go...

I think they look great but will anyone notice them? Let me know what you think...

    P.S. Thank you Ivan

    Hello

Im back! I have been a bit stupid! I was kinda holding off posting anything until the blogs were 'fixed' but didnt realise that I could just upload the pictures to my picture thing then link them here!

Anyway. 2mm realistic ground signals, are they possible....?

I think they are. Below are a couple of pictures of the first one out of four for Highclere. Its been made in a much similar way to the other signal I have made earlier on. It will be operated by a servo as with the other ones eventually. The disk and balance weight are from a MSE etch.

I am hoping that now I have done one I will loose interest doing the others. It was a nice little break from the layout electrics anyway.

    Hello Again

I thought I would put together another post to show what I have been upto...

Inspired by another thread I had a go at making a 2mm scale padlock. According to the size of it, it works out at around 3 inches square.

Here it is fitted to my new little hut I made. From that photo it looks a little too big for a padlock. That photo shows the laser engraved brickwork quite well. The building still needs weathering but I will do that when I next am using the airbrush.

I have also had some time off from bits under the baseboards and moved onto a little bit of scenic stuff. This board was looking a little bare compared to the board with the bridge on so I have done some fencing, added a few bushes, and also made a start on the grass by sticking down some Woodland scenics blended turf. Once this is all dry then I can have a go with some more static grass.

So there you have it. A bit of progress...

    Hello again

The holiday break hasnt been nothing but parties and stuff. I have managed to get a little done...

I managed to get a few wagons built, they still needs couplings, weathering, and some need glazing too..

Secondly this has been on my mind for a while and i seemed a good opportunity to scratch build one, no doubt when its finished it will find its way onto a wagon...

Finally some bits I have actually manged to get Shapeways to print...!

Some universal joints, so far so good but how long they will last is another question...

...and following on from the GW self contained wagon buffers, here are some GW square shank coach buffers...

    Sorry about the rubbish photos.

    EDIT:

Below is a screen grab of the universal joint...

    Hello.

Its common knowledge that after a low there is alway a high and I am not different. I have managed to fit in quite a bit of modelling again this weekend!

Firstly Saturday was once again spent in the company of Mark at his workshop and this time it was time to work on the fiddleyard board at the back of the layout which will hold the cassettes. As with the semi-circular end boards the fiddleyard board was supplied as an amazing 'flat pack' from Alan S of 2mm fame and went together with little trouble. I am now left with quite a bit of track building infront of me to get the boards useable (once my order for more track arrives!) Once again a BIG thank you goes to Mark for his help (I hope I wasnt too much of a pain), and Alan S for making such fantastic bits of woodwork.

Lastly today I was planning to make a start on assembling the point rodding for the layout as this time I would like to get this in place before I ballast the track, but it didnt quite work out like that...

...There has been a part of Highclere that has been really bugging me for a fair time now namely the goods yard and more importantly how the good shed 'sits' into the landscape. Plans and pictures I have are a bit sketchy around that area and after numerous visits to the station I was none the wiser (the land has been landscaped since the railway was closed). Because of this the area on the layout was still bare styrene, it was starting to stand out compared to the rest of the layout so I just had to do something about it. Using my imagination I have come up with this...

The cattle dock is now firmly attached to the layout but the goods shed can be removed if I need it to be repaired or something.

Im glad that bit is out the way! What was a bit of an eyesore is now something I am a little proud of.

    Hello.

Its time for a little update to tell you all about what I have been upto...

Firstly I have now started a new job which is good and a bit of a relief! Of course the down side is it has taken a large slice of my spare time so right now modelling time is limited mostly to weekends.

The trackwork on Highclere is nearlly there. I have spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out a problem with the MERG servo controllers though which has been slowing me down. For some reason at the moment I cannot program the controller chip so therefore I cannot operate the points! Its only a matter of time until its fixed as there are a few possible solutions that not only myself but with the help of a really nice MERG guy by the name of Trevor (thank you Trevor) and so normal service on the layout will resume soon.

Finally some of you might be aware but I am managing to squeeze in a bit of chassis building, the results of which can be found on the RMWeb Showcase (the first post is HERE, the second HERE, the third HERE) Its a chassis for the 2mm Narrow Gauge diesel I built a short while ago and posted on here about (link thingy). Its something a little different from what I am used to and I have been trying out a few new ideas like CNC chassis, 0.2 MOD gears and a different drive arrangement. For those who dont fancy a bit of surfing here are a few photos...

    Hello

Squeezed between spells of Christmas Shopping this weekend I managed to finish off another one of those 'little jobs' which has been on my mind for a bit now. It started off like this...

    And then turned into this...

And after this weekend it finished off looking like this...

As per usual, my stuff looks terrible when you look at it nice and close with a photo, but at normal distances it looks alright!

    Hello.

I am getting a bit frustrated with Highclere. So much so that today my mind has begun to think about taking it round the local tip and getting rid of it all. I have now been fighting with the joint inbetween the two baseboards for several days (solid) and am still no further forward than when I started which is getting really annoying.

I know its probably down to me having a bad day but thinking about the layout in general its a BIG layout and I just dont have the room for such a thing, maybe I have bitten off more than I can chew and perhaps I should rethink things, put Highclere down to experience and start again with something much smaller.

I am not really after sympathy or similar. Im just thinking about the practicalities of it all right now.

    Hello

Just a little update, nothing really exciting to report this time but there are a couple of things worth mentioning...

    1. Tank wagons...

This is the latest test build of my anchor mount tank wagon. I have tweaked the etches to make a 10ft wagon this time as its the one I actually need! This particular wagon has also got a 3D printed tank, printed in the classic FUD and with a very small amount of sanding came out really well. It looks like there has been a problem with the paint reacting at some point and had produced some crazing in some areas but you know what, I quite like it and I think it add a nice 'effect' to the wagon so its going to stay.

    2. Jinty.

This has been on and off my workbench for a while now and has been in parts more time than I care to remember testing out various different components, but its now together and running really well. The components work and if I take away all the 'testing' aspect of it, it has taken about an hour to convert from N Gauge to 2mm Finescale plus its not that difficult to do either.

    Hello

I think I have quite a big problem with the layout now. I was expecting the ballast on the second baseboard to lighten when the glue dried but have realised that its not actually going to change colour at all!!

As you can see there is quite a difference in colour between the two baseboards and to say its a bit annoying is an understatement! but I know that it cannot go right all of the time. It now looks like I will have to chip all the ballast off and redo it as I cannot really do much with that (BTW the top one is correct!)

I have learnt another lesson though...

Even if ballast is labelled the same it doesnt mean it is the same!

Luckily I have enough of the original ballast left...

    Hello

After much consideration I have decided not to continue posting details of my modelling and stuff on RMWeb so this will be the last post you will see from me here. If there is anyone out there in RMWeb world that has even a slight interest in my modelling and things then join me on my other blog here...

    http://modelopolis.blogspot.co.uk/2014/09/all-change.html

I havent decided what I am going to do with my blog on here but I am considering deleting my RMWeb account in the near future.

Thanks for all the support you guys have given me in the past and I hope to speak to some of you in the future.

    Hello

Well, the Ally Pally show is over for another year. I really look forward to going along to the show every year as its one of my favorites. Not only is the show a good oppertunity to meet up with friends, but also there is a good selection of layouts to see and it all take place in a fantastic venue. Its about my 6th year now I have gone along and sat on the 2mmSA stand at the show and I hope its not the last time..

This year way a bit different for me, for the first time I went along and spent the day on the stand with Noel, Brian, and Mark who I dont usually see that often plus I had to take the 2mmSA 'Roadshow' equipment along as it was passed onto me last weekend after the Nottingham show. I decided to take along my latest etches which I had done recently and have a go at building a few bits from it, this meant I could take a lot less stuff than I would nomally take. Thankfully I didnt have to haul it all up the hill this year either!

So, this is the stuff I was working on...

I made a start on the yard crane for Highclere. I had previously drawn the crane jib and had it etched to test if it actually worked! There were quite a few people interested in seeing how this came out and several said they would come back toward the end of the show to see how I had got on with it so I cut out the etched jib and soldered it together. Fortunately it went together ok so today I spent a little more time on the crane and got a bit more done.

The plan was to keep this a bit quiet until I was confident it went together ok but its been one of those 'worst kept secret' things so here it is, The beginnings of my kit for a 2mm scale City of Truro. Unfortunately I have found several mistakes on the etches so far so I am unsure if to carry on with this particular model or wait, redesign the bits and get it etched again. It has dented my confidence a bit but in retrospect its only the second thing I have ever designed for etching! Luckily the faulty bits can be easily redrawn so its just a matter of time...

It was nice to meet up and chat with people like Andy, Chris, and Tom (to name a few) once again and I am looking forward to next time.

    Hello.

I think its about time for an update, there are a couple of things worth mentioning..

Firstly progress on Highclere is slow but it hasnt stopped. I have, and still am working through the trackwork on the second board making sure that there are no obvious faults along its length.

Its difficult to make out in the above photogragh but I am now about 2/3 the way along the track on the board. Most of the track on this board has been replaced with only the point really left but I didnt really fancy the idea of stripping the ballast off all the track so took the easy option.

One thing that has made the job a little easier is the track gauge in the above photogragh. Geoff Jones of the 2mm SA has made something similar and has recently posted details of it on the 2mm SA group so I copied the idea. It is filed from a small bit of 0.4mm thick Brass sheet, the chemical blackening isnt really necessary but it looks good!

Finally there has been a bit of progress on the Nn3 stuff too. Firstly below is the results of my days demo on Saturday at the Alexander Palace show, the wagon on the right is not far off what I started with and the wagon on the left is the result of me chopping one to pieces! The plan was to make a Nn3 wagon from a 009 one, has it worked? I am not convinced!

Above is the beginnings of the chassis for the Nn3 Diesel I recently posted about. This time it has been designed with AutoCAD and CNC machined out of 0.5mm thick PCB. More details on how I did this can be found on the RMWeb Showcase HERE.

    Hello

I have this week off work (woohoo!) and one of my goals is to finish off the electrics and actually get something working on the layout, after all its only been about 4 years now plus I think people will get a bit bored at shows if nothing actually works!

Anyway, day 1 of my break this is how far I have got...

The control panel is now 90% finished. I just need to fix some magnets to it to hold the top bit down (which are on order)

Apart from bits like uncouplers and signals I THINK I have finished the wiring on both basebords now. I have one cable left to make and in theory I should be able to plug it all together and it hopefully will work! Thats quite a big milestone for me.

I thought I would post this as it shows how I have fitted the little flicker things (from the tea lights) to the layout. I have soldered them to a bit of veroboard and also added a variable resistor so I can tweak the brightness of them.

The final picture shows some more woodwork mods. I am fitting some cross braces to the underside of the baseboard which the legs slot into. The idea is to reduce the flex of the legs a bit.

On the subject of exhibitions I am getting a little worried. I am starting to think about taking the layout to some exhibitions (as I am starting to get invites for it) but reading some postings it seems people are getting quite critical over layouts they see. I dont mind constuctive critism but please be gentle with mine!

    Hello

Got a bit more done this weekend. Saturday was spent in Stafford operating what is in my opinion one of the best running 2mmFS layouts ever. Today I carried on with the box that holds all the mains stuff.

Its nearly there. I have another transformer to fit inside (for the LENZ thingy), the connector on the top, and then wire it all up. I will be really glad when all of this is out of the way so I can then concentrate on more exciting things!

While I am here, does anyone know where I can get some 12v fluorescent tubes from? I am after some warm coloured tubes.

    Hello.

After struggling a bit soldering the point rodding stools on Friday evening my mind started to think of an alternative solution to holding the bits together while I solder them. As per normal I ended up spending pretty much all of Friday night/Saturday morning lying awake in bed trying to think of a new jig and I got an answer in the early hours of Saturday.

After a few sketches (above) my milling machine was out and a new jig was made. The rest of this weekend has pretty much been spent assembling the first bit of point rodding (on and off, I have done other things!). The photos below hopefully show how much a normal viewer of the layout will see!

    Hello.

Well my focus has been on the point rodding and the stuff seems endless! I dread to think how long I have spent on the stuff but I can report that its nearly comming to an end (I cant believe it!). There is a little bit left to do which I want to replace and then painting and sticking in place but I will be VERY glad when its all done.

Anyway, here are a few pictures of the recent work...

I hope I didnt scare anyone off at the recent High Wycombe show when I was beavering away on this with a magnifying glass?!?

    Hello

After running at the Abingdon Club last Friday it became apparant that my converted Farish wagons were not as free rolling as they should be and so my little pannier tank was struggling pulling them around the clubs layout. The problem is that the 2mm SA do not supply an axle the correct length for the wagons.

Taking an idea I picked up a while ago for 4mm models I decided today to take a break from Elvis and made myself a 2mm equivalent...

The tool I made was made from two pieces of brass tube that were a sliding fit with each other. I turned up from Brass some end pieces that slotted into the ends of the tubes and which had a hole in each end to take a short length of steel rod. The steel rod was then ground to a pin point and one of them was filed to make a simple 'D' bit. This was then soldered together as per the above picture.

A spring was then fitted into the tube so the two parts sprung apart and added a little pressure onto the drill.

The drill was then squeezed together and inserted into the axleboxes of the wagon. It was then rotated for a bit then the drill was turned 180 degrees and repeated. As the axleboxes are plastic it doesnt take alot to open out the pin point bearings.

Through trial and error I now have a free running wagon, hopefully the next time I am at the club my engines will pull a few more wagons around! Its not a very neat job but the important thing is it seems to work.

    Hello again.

My modelling mojo has returned once again. I think its down to a combination of things, shows, steam railways, and quiet weekends have all helped. Using this new apparent enthusiasm I have once again turned my attention to the never ending point rodding for the layout. Its been something that has slowed progress on the layout to an almost standstill. Below is the next installment in the long running saga of Highcleres point rodding, some of you might have already seen some of these elsewhere on RMWeb...

I took another approach this time. A section of rodding roughly 2ft in length is 4 rods wide and I didnt really fancy the idea of individually soldering 5 rodding stools every scale 6ft or so. This meant a rethink to try and speed things up a little so above was the beginnings of a different approach, a 0.3mm thick length of Brass which has 0.5mm wide x 0.7mm deep slots with a 0.7mm pitch milled into it.

This Brass 'comb' was them cut up into sections which could hold 4 rods, which in turn was soldered to a short length of 2mmSA PCB sleepering. For cosmetic purposes (is anyone really going to ever see them for real?) I then soldered 2 etched stools to each end.

The point rodding (0.4mm square stuff from MSE) was then easily slotted into place and the whole thing was held together with a little solder. Care was taken not to hold the soldering iron in place for too long so to unsolder everything (it happened a couple of times which was a pain).

Ok, so not the best quality photos (taken with my phone) but this is the impression the point rodding gives. This particular section still needs to be painted then stuck into place properly (its resting on top in the piccies). To me, this is a mini milestone as producing rodding using this method has made it so much easier, so much so that the rest of it doesnt look anywhere near as daunting to me. Sadly though I didnt produce enough of the bits so it will be back to the beginning soon to produce some more.

I hope it looks alright and is worth all the effort?

    Hello

Its been a while, I think its time for an update...

    1. Single line token apparatus.

Its been on my mind for a while now that I would like to see some form of single line apparatus on Highclere and thanks to Andy plus a visit to Didcot I managed to get enough info to make some. Armed with this I made a start at the recent Oxford show and finished them off today, ready for planting on the layout at sometime.

Ok, so close up they look a little tatty but when you will see them on the layout they will look alright. Oh, and if anyone is interested on how I made the mesh, see below...

    2. John Grey Trestrol.

This didnt go exactly to plan. I fancied doing a wagon kit and this one seemed like a good idea at the time. The problem is that the kit isnt exactly the best available and after an attempt to make it look slightly better I ended up with a wagon that was pretty much 19mm wide.

Because of this, the kit has now gone into 'deep storage' and its been put down to experience.

    3. 2mmSA Lowmac.

Following onto the Trestrol, plus the fact I had to find something to do at the recent Swindon show my attention turned to the 2mm Scale Association NE Lowmac wagon. The intention for this will ultimately be a wagon to display some of my narrow gauge stock so it will end up with a short piece of NG track.

Its not the easiest kit to build, the main problem with it is the etched overlays for the sides do not have enough clearance added to clear the cross braces which makes soldering them in place a bit of a pain. This wagon has now been shot blasted and is awaiting painting.

    4. Foden Lorry.

The first of my 'virtual' modelling goes to my Foden lorry. As some of you might be aware I have had problems getting this printed via Shapeways and now is with Rabs of this forum who is going to have a go at printing it for me.

I am looking forward to seeing the results of this.

    5. Type L Container.

This has come about from a discussion with some 2mm guys at the recent N gauge show where I found out the containers for N Brass' conflat wagon dont exist. Armed with this and a kit for myself I thought it would make sense to model the container for printing.

This will be going for a test print with Shapeways soon and fingers crossed I can get something printed!

    6. Morris Type J Van.

After being persuaded by a certain 2mm member at a car show earlier this year (where there was one) to try and make a 2mm version of this van. To start with I thought 'this should be relatively easy' but its proven to be anything but. The whole van is full of compound curves which has made modelling it a bit tricky.

Currently the model has stalled until I figure out how to finish off a couple of bits on the body.

    7. Allchin Traction Engine.

Finally this is a somewhat ambition project for myself, especially trying to work out how to do the fiddly bits on top keeping the detail yet making it 3D printing friendly. The bulk of the superstructure is done though...

It originally started off as a means to produce some traction engine wheels but it has gone slightly beyond that now.

I do have a few other projects on the go and Im sure to post about them in the future...

    Hello

I have spent this morning finishing off the cattle dock as I seem to be collecting unfinished projects!

I have tried to make it as dirty and unloved as possible, please let me know if it looks right.

    Missy

    ADDITIONAL:

Steve posted a comment that the cattle dock looked a little too clean so with thanks to Steves advice, below are a couple of photos with a little more mud added...
