  1. One problem with clearing out to the trade, is that the retailers will cherry pick and leave the dross, which Hornby will never shift.

The problem with this approach would be that Hornby in this scenario would be giving away saleable stuff away, but retaining the problem stuff themselves.

Looking at some of the stuff discounted on Rails/Hattons, it looks like there was an element of taking the rough with the smooth when looking at Hattons bargain lines, as the summers worn on, the list of nice stuff is shrinking, but Hattons has never been one to shy from a bargain and will happily sit with the dross, until inflation makes it go away. (Thinking here of those still new in stock new Dublo power rails they still have, 50years after they bailed Dublo out of a crisis.)

Let's face it, if Hornby hit this crisis in 2017, the retailers will gladly take new Merchant Navy's at pennies on the pound, but wouldn't be so quick to scoop up 0-4-0 saddle tank trainsets.

Without "empying the warehouse", the only way they reasonably could clear stock to retailers would be "lucky dip" boxes, which I'm speculating was the case to H and R earlier this year.

  2. I wouldnt be so hasty to write off steam... the Webb coal tank is coming, and the production model is LNWR plain Black, if i were a betting man i'd put my chips on a 1054 Ala Dinting /Rainhill 1980's lined LNWR livery coming out as a collectors model somewhere. (I did ask but they weren't giving that info away).

(What a difference a day makes.. 24 hours ago i was dissapointed it looked as if this model was going to be modern too, but a few minutes in the collectors club Den having seen what's coming I'm full of optimism !), and I want that XP47 too !

  3. Hi adb, how does it compare, looks wise, with the latest Hornby offering?

They had 4468 running on their circular show layout, with some older railroad teaks.. tbh those railroad teaks looked well out of place it has to run with the new ones.. so I guess by that statement I'm saying it's up there in detail.

The differences that make it stand out are the fitted headlamps, and the cab rain sheeting (which isn't dispensable as it sits on a fitting that would look odd if it were removed).

It's a slightly more glossy finish than I originally expected, the blue looks darker, but 2510/2512 look feel very close to Hornby's recent versions, (I say more satin glossy if Hornby is more satin/matt), so it'll be the different one on shed. However if it were a matt finish, it'd be oily from the smoke oil and not easy to clean.

That said, from the few 1930s pictures out there, the original silver A4s do look more glossy than Hornbys.

I almost pulled the trigger and bought Bittern today,(more sentimental as I was on one of the 90mph runs in 2013) I most likely still will, but as I model more BR steam era I am going to wait to see the BR green ones first, as it's unlikely I'll buy two, but having seen these initial ones my gut feel, as i didnt see yet, is the BR green (if as glossy as the current ones) the BR could be a closer match to Bachmanns for colour/finish and LNER green closer to the new Hornby Limited editions.

The guy on the Dapol stand said there is a switch underneath to turn the smoke off, though when i'd run it, it would be because I want to show it off, which as a DC person was why I was so keen to ensure which controller I can use, and still get steam/Sound/lights and action.

One will find a home with me, either Bittern or BR Green.

  4. Amongst stand out features of these are the AWS protection covers on the front coupling, drivers windshields, screw couplings etc (there's an NEM pocket behind the aws cover).

42968 (late crest / riveted tender ) is on display in the outer cabinet, with the LMS liveried Webb coal tanks.

My pictures don't do the models justice, they are much nicer in the flesh, the paint finish is brilliant.

I had 42968 on order, but I can see myself with all three. The LMS version with the red lining really looks good.

  5. In stock and on sale at warley today.

(I think this was the only new tooled loco to be released to sale today)

All versions except BR Green and LNER green.

    I saw 4464,4467,4468,2510,2512.

All looked very cool, was assured for DC users, this will work with sound, lights and smoke for a gaugemaster model W (obviously sound is limited when on DC).

Comes with a black box, includes extra centre driving wheel (with traction tyres) for those that need it to pull more than 5kg, smoke oil / funnel and an extra cartazzi bogie / wheel.

Looks good, didn't realise about the flickering firebox glow. Has the cab rain sheet fitted (its rubber) and a spare.

Considering the price, an A4 with Sound, 3 Lights & smoke this isn't bad at all.

BR and LNER green to follow.

  6. This just looks the nuts.

Really nice model, probably the best rendition of the stanier outline boiler I've seen.

The rivet detail on the wheels is very nice.

There is also a lined black LMS outline on display, which also looks equally well finished.

This model raises the bar again.

(I asked b4 taking the picture).

  7. Turnaround plan sounds good.

Sadly £2mn in job losses, but if it's needed it's needed.

I haven't heard many comments about the retailers new ts &cs so one assumes no news is good news there too.

No massive sales, but stock reduction

They are planning a smaller volume of product sales from a smaller range (and we've seen the price rises), hard to say this sound like a plan that doesn't seem solid... ?

  8. Just to clarify I wasn't guessing at a ScotRail 47 or that I have any insider knowledge of models. :)

It was just that adb968008 had mentioned Duff as a nickname and I was pointing out that we used to call the ScotRail ones MacDuffs. To see one was quite a cop for some of us as they were normally working in Scotland. Although I think I saw them all eventually around the North West of England.

47461 was the odd one out, it carried scotrail livery, but was the only 47/4 to do so. It met its end in an accident in Liverpool, but I recall seeing it round the manchester area quite a lot.

The Scotrail 47/7s made their way to Old Oak to replace the 50's but were invariably not upto it. From there they scattered. 47712 has been repainted at Crewe into Scotrail.

  9. 198 as an air tank on the running plate by the footplate, with air pipes leading to the PKP air pump fitted on the front.

The nameplate sits between the leading and centre wheels, pretty much as you have mounted, just needs to be further to the front.

Here's a side on, from the same perspective as your own.

    https://locoyard.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/047-isle-of-wight-steam-railway-havenstreet-wd198-royal-engineer.jpg

Here's a close up of the nameplate showing the mounting, it looks almost as if the nameplate is mounted and bolted to lamp brackets.

    https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2854/10887482105_51381c088b_b.jpg

For attachment, maybe a small piece of plastic with an L shape (corner of a square yoghurt pot or butter container, or something like), cut to size, glue to the nameplate first, let it set, then glue the other side of the L to the frames ? If it needs weight to counter balance / stop the nameplate falling forwards when setting, maybe a blob of blue tack on the L to hold it, and knock it off with a cock tail stick after it sets.

For the airtank, maybe a piece of a fat drinking straw, cut to length, filled and painted, for the air pump, Roco & Piko sell them as HO spares.

  10. According to the trainmail email it looks like the next collectors model is yet another one for the modern image fans...

An outline of a 'duff' with radio aerials is the clue, could be any of many.

Duff = slang for class 47.

  11. At 26seconds in, there's a suburban coach lying on its side.

It looks like it has a solid bogie (a motor bogie perhaps ?).

But the coach also looks like it has step boards under the doors.. ( looking round the recent range everything seems to have full length running boards).

Any thoughts what it is ?

  12. Does St Helier come under GWR ?, Only ever seen pictures of SR stuff going here, from Clapham Junction ?

Not sure where the origin point was.

(By St Helier I'm thinking you mean Morden, about a mile away from St Helier ?)

  13.

    • Also there is currently a plan to do the Royal Train and the Network Rail Measurement Coaches but it will take between 2 - 3 years to work through the programme.

Good hint there as stock being modelled for the prototype HST set...(2 coaches from the prototype set went to the Royal Train, and 2 others to the NRMT).

  14. It's airport is a bit of an odd ball too. Earlier this year I arrived 2.5 hours before my flight to Amsterdam (meeting ended early), only to find the airport closed, doors locked. I couldn't even get a taxi back out. I had to sit at a bus shelter.

around 45mins - 1 hour later a half dozen people showed up, opened up and issued me with a hand written boarding pass (first time I've had one of these for over 20 years), then I had to pay an airport admission fee of £10 use immigration (note this is not to use a priority line.. they really don't need one, but just to use immigration and go in to departures)...don't know what happens if you don't pay, I presume you'd miss your flight, or have to climb over the wall.

The coffee shop looked a bit iffy on sell by dates so I gave it a miss (not sure the volume of business), most flights seem to be helicopters to oil rigs, 1 or 2 person flights.

When it came to boarding (there was around 20-30 of us), they called passengers by name to the gate and wrote a seat number on the boarding pass, crossed us off the list.

I took the klm flight to Amsterdam, but was stopped at the desk from checking in for the return, as they had no record of my taking the outbound flight, fortunately, all the above I had photographed / facebooked as it was so far out there as flying experiences in the modern world goes that I was able to show and prove I had flown.

I think of Norwich and think of Alan Partridge this quirky little airport he would definitely fit in.

I'm still waiting FF credit for the flight KLM don't seem to understand this airport didn't have a computer to be able check me in, so everything was done by hand.

Nice city though, very clean, quite historic, some good bars / restaurants in some quaint /very old settings. Castle in the city centre on the hill, medieval style market square below, cathedrals, and many very old churches.

Whilst B17s don't run any more it does have a reliable link to the capital every 30 minutes with class 90's and Mk3's, and a restaurant on board, so you can have a steak and eat it whilst passing the various towns.

It's odd that Norwich is a transport time warp, but I think it makes the city a nicer place for it, it's relaxing and not stressful, the road /rail links mean it's only 2 hours from london, but they are uncongested, good quality and it just works on the dozen or so journeys I've made...(I've arrived in Norwich by 08/37/47/86/90/7MT/7P5FA/1997 Astra & Fokker 70)

If you stay at the Holiday inn, it's in the corner of the football stadium, and if you look at the players tunnel from the window, you can see the B17 nameplate from "Norwich City".

I'd not swap it for a London to Birmingham trip by any mode of transport.

  15. But what could they do that they haven't already done/announced?

    Shunter - done

    Main line loco - done

    DMU - on the way

    EMU - just released

    Coaches - done this year

Even wagons in NSE livery have been announced.....

    Assuming it's modern image.

Steam is a bit over due in my opinion..

    MLV (sold out)

    WCRC 37 (still available)

    08 (1980/90s) (still available)

    Blue class 20 (still available)

    Sealink coaches (still available)

    Exhibition coach (still available)

    WCRC Pullman coach (still available)

    NCB brake van (still available)

Other steam has been the :

    J11 (sold out)

    LBSC E4 (sold out)

    Patriot (still available)

so I don't think the modern image guys can't complain too much, especially when it's not sold out.

But what for steam ? Looking at recent releases, preserved Crab maybe ?,other releases are 9f, pannier, std 4mt, USA tanks ?

Maybe a wickham trolley maybe BR green or LMR blue, or a st trinians version ?

Though i'm still thinking (wishing) 40106 will appear at some point.
