My father came from Birmingham and my mother from Manchester. Be careful if you think that preservation carriage lighting is a good guide to what was the norm pre 1965. I have regularly worked the Mid Hants Railway Real Ale Train over the last 20 years and due to problems with the batteries not recharging enough LED bulbs were fitted. They don't drain the batteries as quickly which means there is light at the end of the evening and they provide a brighter light throughout the evening. So a win win situation for railway and passengers but not actually how things were in days gone by. The other thing is that on a bright summer evening if you walk down the platform you can't tell if the lights are on or off which is the main reason why I don't bother with lights in my model coaches.

My father carefully pinned the track on my LoneStar 000 Electric layout to a board which was kept behind the settee and put on the dining room table for operating sessions. This all worked well until one Saturday I woke up early and set the railway up by myself. My parents were impressed by how quietly I done it but when my father removed the layout for breakfast there were a number of large scratches on the table! The table was a high quality one that had been given to my parents as a wedding present and they were very upset although they said they did not blame me.

You can order your coffee "extra hot" at most coffee bars which solves the tepid problem. If you are a regular in a coffee bar taking a tepid version back with a complaint that it is nearly cold a few times soon means they do their best to serve it at boiling point.
